Thought I would wait for the Pro (and probably should have!) but after Astrobot I was in the mood for something completely different and I like supporting games that are decidedly old-school in their approach so I pulled the trigger.

I beat the campaign solo on Veteran, beat all the Operations missions on the first two difficulty levels mostly solo (still no private lobbies, randoms sometimes join and hinder rather than help lol), played a bunch of PvP, clocked 40 hours overall and got 60% of the trophies. The game is great but I need to get this out of the way first: SM2 has the *worst* performance and loading I've ever experienced in a current gen game since I bought my PS5 at launch, no exaggeration.

When the shit hits the fan (something that happens roughly every 3 minutes) the frame rate tanks to what seems like 20 fps and this is in Performance Mode (called "Speed" lmao). Loading likewise is atrocious and these two things absolutely hinder the experience (again, on PS5) and for that reason alone I'd advise PS5 owners considering it wait for the Pro or some patches that can smooth things out to some degree (who knows what can actually be done, I know it's CPU heavy but Dragon's Dogma 2 proved optimization can go a long way if the devs put the effort in).

Having said all that, I can't stop playing it. I've always had a passing interest in 40K, something about it's world and characters always appealed to me. Bought a couple of 40K games but ultimately they didn't grab me, this is the first one. The mythology and realization of this world is it's biggest selling point, even with zero familiarity with the source material I can sense this is a faithful representation of the universe (fans feel free to chime in). Hulking warriors fighting a never-ending fight, soaring gothic architecture, Judeo-Christian overtones, honour, duty and brotherhood, grimdark and unceasingly violent, this is fantastic stuff!

The action is relentless and feels great, chunky shooting and visceral melee is a winning combination. Much like God of War, one of my favourite aspects is the gory finishing moves, they never get old and I wish there were more of them. Stages are linear and it's refreshing to have a more classic structure like this, SM2 - like it's soldiers - are focused on the mission, there is no fat and no unnecessary detours. I love the feeling of being a single cog (albeit a very important one!) in a massive war, seeing Thunderhawks depart the cavernous hangar as you walk around the base, officers giving speeches as you lumber through another devastated battlefield, it's a perfectly realized vision.

On the subject of battlefields there is some genuinely cool shit in SM2. Soaring cathedrals obscured by hundreds of Tyranids flying through the air, underground crypts with the graves of fallen heroes, a level where periodic sandstorms keep rolling in completely obscuring your vision. There is a nice variety keeping things fresh and I appreciate that missions are *long*, it adds to the epic feeling Sabre has so perfectly captured. At times the visuals are on par with the best I've experienced this gen, other times it can look like a PS3 game, guess you've got to take the good with the bad lol.

Operations Mode is surprisingly deep with a ton of stuff to unlock for each character class. Heavy is probably my favourite class (multi-melta ftw) though I've enjoyed using all of them. I appreciate that this mode is essentially an extension of the campaign showing what was going on with other squads while Titus and Co were doing their own thing. Many moments rival anything in the campaign with some cool, unique boss battles/set-piece moments. There is some variation (one run you might need to search bodies in the central hall while in another you might need to go through the crypts) but with only 6 maps I wonder how long people will stick with. I also feel XP is stingy given how long these missions take to complete and the real chance of failure once you move up to Average difficulty, it gets pretty crazy.

PvP is a fun diversion that takes things back to a simpler time. I got all the associated trophies and enjoyed the shenanigans but with only THREE maps it gets stale rather quick. Still, as a total package SM2 delivers the goods, would love a third entry (ending hints at more) and a remaster of the first game. Overall I wish the performance was better but let's see how things improve (or not) over time. Now give me Darktide on my PS5 dammit!

Operations are simply overtuned, this game is going to shed players after they complete the campaign. Easiest difficulty I have yet to complete an op with randos after 5 attempts, my only complete has been with a buddy and a bot. For the time commitment per attempt, people are just gonna move on. Im pretty much done.

I don't often buy games at full price, and in the past year that's only been Diablo 4 since I grew up playing that series. But I purchased Space Marine 2 the other day at full price. Not a bad game, not a great game, 7 in my opinion. But its only 7 because it could have been a whole lot more in terms of longevity and content not because it had something bad.

My point is that's the best 60 euros I've spent in a long time, a straight-up game with no bullshit or guys with tits and chicks with dicks. Just guys being dudes. And I am pleased to support the developer for that.

Awww man, the performance bit really brings the whole experience down apparently 🥲
Anyway, thanks for the input Phantom, you just saved me 70 big ones - I'm playing Wukong right now (got it yesterday) and I can't imagine loading times and framerates worse than that, what a bummer...

G'dammit, we really need new hardware, don't we ? Fookin' Sony and their price gouging policies, that damned Pro looks more and more like a necessity after all if you don't want to game at shitty sub HD resolutions or sub-30 framerates nowadays (depends on the game obviously, still...)

Cheers

I stopped playing Wukong after the 1st chapter, on hold for the Pro. It's just too good. Definitely the right choice here as well, I'm at around 75% completion I'm leaving the rest till November.

Dear Bartski, that was the initial plan for me also but, at 920€ I just don't know anymore...that's a BIG ask for a mid-gen refresh brother and something which - personally - I can't justify...

Who the hell am I kidding though, I gonna grab it either way down the line, I just cannot do unstable, below 30fps anymore nor terrible IQ due to the ever horrible FSR.

They are not tho? We farmed the tier 4 one with a friend AND AN AI yesterday with almost no issue. We were less than level 10.

What class are you playing?

Now, the reason I'm saying at times is because the lighting and post effects were obviously downgraded and cuz of this more often than not the game looks flat cuz a lot of objects lack proper (if any) SSAO, contact shadows from lighting and basically a lot of light sources and global illumination is not causing objects to cast shadows at all. Obviously it was made for performance's sake but removing all this from the game entirely was a very bad idea and it hurt the presentation of otherwise flawless and amazing looking art and art design. I haven't checked it there's mod already to fix all this but man... they need add at least RTGI to the game as well as RT local shadows, not to mention DLSS to save on VRAM a bit.

Ew loading? Isn’t this SSD no loading era on PS5? Bad optimization

Just finished the campaign and I loved it from beginning to end. This has to be the most testosterone-filled game I have ever played lol. We need more games like this in the year 2024.

Will probably start experimenting with PvE and the different classes later today. I can’t wait!

How is the endgame?
My wife and I played outriders (which many people hated) for a long ass time. That had a bunch of missions you would run through trying to get better great and time.
Does anyone feel this one has similar longevity? I know there is dlc coming but don't want to rely on it

Μan, I really want to get this on the PS5 but those performance issues...I don't know, everybody says that it spends most of the time at the 30/sub-30 fps mark than actual 60 on "speed mode"...

Has the company made any comments on releasing a patch or whatever ?
I really can't do bad performing games anymore (DD2, AW2, FF16 and now this)

I play in quality mode and the framerate is rather fluid and steady on PS5.
Im not sure 60 fps is necessary since the gameplay is more of a spray and pray (literally, don't forget to give thanks to the Emperor for every kill you make) than a sniperfest.
I only did 3 story missions so maybe it gets more bombastic the further you advance in the campaign tho.

As an aside i love the environmental stroytelling of the game, like when you enter the battlebarge and see your 8ft tall astarte walk around all those puny techpriests...

When the game was pounding my cpu I limited it to 30, but it was definitely too rough for me, I wound up limiting to 40 and that was much better.
Now with the cpu patch I'm back to 60 and it's definitely a much better experience overall.

I don't know if I'm just not as sensitive to it anymore but the performance dips aren't really bothering me in Speed Mode on PS5.

I've been playing on Speed mode (performance mode) and not finding the fps drops to be as bad as people made them out to be. Like it's totally playable, I'm not even thinking about them until I read posts here.

Change your build or tactics. I literally can solo the 2nd highest difficulty with CPUs. The game is not that hard.

Not really enjoying this, its kinda basic. Thought there would be better weapons (its almost indistinguishable what weapon youre picking up, the icons all look the same). Needs a skill tree/ or some sort of progression system. Every level just feels like horde mode

AMD fuckery. AMD sponsored the game so it’s going to have nerfed lighting and weird cpu jank. If SM2 had ray tracing it might be the best looking game of all time.

Almost on par? Graphically this game obliterate gears 5 except for male faces that are inexplicably low quality compared to the rest.

Didn't you watched any gameplay video before buying the game?

Having costant hordes to kill is one of the reason why i felt off about the game and didn't caved in.

He’s wrong though so which videos are you watching? Its got randomized boss fights counters and actual deep combat with skill trees that compliment eachother in coop. His take is lazy.

I literally asked in this topic and the answer was that you have to deal with constant hordes and trash mobs for 90% of the campaign, even when you fight bigger enemies, trash mobs are almost always there to annoy you.

The couple of reviews i saw said pretty much the same thing and all the footage i saw always has these small xenomorph around you all the fucking time except when you fight the spacemarine that explode into purple stuff.

And he\we are talking about the campaign, not the operations, i know those are different, but for me the campaign is the major selling point.

Some yes. I have no issue with the hordes but that’s all there seems to be. It needs something else

Have you played the game on PC maxed out after the latest visual update GymWolf GymWolf ? Gears 5 (not to mention SP expansion) on a pure technical level looks better than SM2 which is missing a lot of stuff I already mentioned and you can even see it on my screens. I don't mean character models and such btw and I don't think that faces in SM2 are inexplicably low quality, maybe some of them not as good as they could've been, I can't argue with that, but definitely not the main squad.

The main difference between Gears 5 and SM2 is that the later is a lot busier visually due to constant war on the surface and stuff (not to mention swarms of xenos), there's a lot going on on the background and Gears 5 simply don't have that. I haven't played Gears 5 all the way through after the latest visual update (I will at some point), but a few missions was enough for me to see a huge difference.

Played PvP all day. It’s pretty fun, but I wish they had some way of better balancing teams. Seemed like 75% of my games I was matched with level 1 or 2 players against a squad of level 10+ people.

I played the first 2 acts of g5 at launch on pc maxed out and it was nowhere near sm2, i doubt that a graphic update made much of a difference tbh unless they completely rewritten the whole game (which i doubt) but i'm a bit biased, i never thought g5 looked that impressive even in the past gen, especially for being a small non-open world game.

Btw caved in and bought the game, first impression are ok i guess, for better or worse the game feel EXACTLY how i expected, kinda messy when you get attacked at the same time by small cunts, bigger cunts and green shooting cunts, it feels like losing health and armour is part of the game and not really avoidable and you just have to outdone the enemy damage output before they kill you, at least on veteran, not sure how much i like this playstyle.

Btw is there any audio option to change to get louder voices? Even with max volume they are very quiet and muffled with the latest sony headset...

This fucking headset strong point should have been clear voices and they sound worse than in my old platinum headset :lollipop_squinting:
