What actor has best portrayed a mentally disabled person?

I'm going to go with DiCaprio in "Whats Eating Gilbert Grape". I recently rewatched it this weekend for the first time in years and it really is an amazing performance. From his high pitched squeal to his scissor fingering ticks, I dont think Ive ever seen a child actor nail a role like that with such legitimacy. I dont know who he was running against in those '93 Oscars, but he definitely deserved it.

Coincidentally, Julliette Lewis was also in this movie and she later played a great handicapped person in "The Other Sister".

Ryan Gosling in Lars and the Real Girl.

I... think he is.... "special" at least. But SO good, he at least deserves a mention of it.

How was Adam Sandler now the first reply? He does it to perfection in every movie he has ever been in.

Another vote would go to nearly every supporting character in Dexter.

Ed Norton at the beginning of that one heist movie with DeNiro.

Russell Crowe a beautiful mind is what I would go with, a lot of these are just stereotypes of what people think mental illness is like, and quite frankly do a lot of harm to helping the treatment of these people.

Sure he had a mental illness but disabled? What?
