What exactly is the state of Xbox Series now & going forward?

Do not come in here & say " Florida" then leave there is an actual discussion to be had here.

Console generations last a lot longer nowadays and even in the 12th year we are still getting games for PS4/Xbox One which means Xbox Series should still be getting games in 2032. So what's Microsoft plans for the hardware? They barely responded to PlayStation Holiday discounts so if there is a real PlayStation 5 price drop coming soon will they react or just let Xbox Series sales continue to fade ? Will they even boost production for the arrival of Grand Theft Auto VI?

They are not gonna prioritize hardware anymore, building the ecosystem is their "this is an Xbox" strategy.

i hope we get an emotional CEO speech from big Phil when they announce they’re winding down the console business. “i wanna thank you all for your loyalty and passion on this journey, etc etc. I’m retiring, get fucked.”

Everything looks like they’re ready to exit consoles after burying themselves in payroll from ABK and Bethesda. But people are saying they’re making new hardware. I guess time will tell. PC gamepass doesn’t seem that popular to me and Ms will just be forfeiting millions of monthly subs if they stop doing consoles.

They said loud and clear that they have new hardware, I'm not sure if it will be mass produced though

But seriously: The only reason the Xbox One is still getting games is because the PS4 gets them and it sounds like it's a small effort to spit out an XO version if you're already doing PS4.

I don't think it's reasonable to expect developers will keep making Xbox Series ports of new games years into the future. Once the next Xbox hits shelves, I'd expect support for the Series to be dropped within two years by everyone except Microsoft. It's just not a successful console in volume, and it's even worse in attach rate.

Confusing to say the least and unknown country. Trying to blurr the line between third party publisher and platform holder is an interestinf challenge. It has never been done successfully concurrently. It's 2 competing strategies that impact the other.

It's an icon on my Windows 11. I click on it to open Gamepass.
It will be possible for me to come back but they will have to build a machine that can beat my PC.
Not some half assed memory constrained mirror of a Sony machine.
Good luck.

They say a lot of shit.
They said in January of 2024 that Indiana Jones would not be coming to PS5.

Microsoft's plans are constantly changing.
The only thing that can be counted on is that Nutella loves AI. Probably more than his own family.

Microsoft have a slew of games coming out that are 1st party. Here’s a thought- cancel your day 1 sub service for these games, make people BUY the games and, most importantly, MAKE THEM EXCLUSIVES TO XBOX CONSOLES! That might help sales of their consoles.

I think they're already fading out Series as we speak, given that we had that thread discussing Series stock in Western countries seemingly running low while sales data shows Series sales are practically dead.

Edit:

And there was that vague report from China early last year saying that production of Series was halted, as Sony halved production of PS5 at the same time.

Why would you WANT this?

They will release the next Xbox in 2026 or 2027 and leave the series X for the bargain bin.

That wouldn't help at all, not even if they release 20 exclusives per year. Most casuals don't give a shit about exclusives unless they are hardcore marketed. Xbox is dead at lastest since mid last gen and nothing is gonna change that.

But they really should remove day1 Game Pass releases and make it 3-6 months after the release instead to make more money.

Yeah same here, well I have a Series X on a shelf but I’m not sure I even played an hour on it in 2024 since the Xbox stats showed 9 hours and then Gamepass on PC is included and I played COD there.

I do hope they add the old consoles to the Xbox app emulated at some point. That would get me to retire the console. As it is I have it for the hundreds of BC games I don’t want to lose access to.

A future Xbox would be interesting if it’s powerful enough to not feel like a huge downgrade from PC and if it has emulated old consoles, Steam, Gamepass, Epic, on the same UI.

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
Let’s be honest, the time Xbox peaked was before the PS3 slim arrived, once the PS3 slim came out, PS3 caught up… Then on the Xbox One/PS4, gen, PS4 completely overtook the Xbox at the start and left it to dust. For comparison and basing it off the Wiki, the best selling Xbox One game is PUBG at 9m vs Spider-Man at 20m. Then PS5/Xbox Series gen came and it was a continuation of the previous gen but probably much worse.

That is not happening anymore. Xbox already lost too big of a share to start rebuilding it. Plus with game budgets skyrocketing they need all the players they can get and even Sony knows that, releasing their first party games on PC.

Only Nintendo can afford to keep doing the same thing, because they never changed their strategy when it comes to exclusives and their games don't cost hundreds of millions of dollars.

The state of xbox going forward is them driving 900000 miles an hour into the deep dark abyss never to be taken seriously ever again and that's not even trolling. I mean the next console they release after the series s/x is going to bomb and bomb hard because now that people know they're a third party company, no one is going to buy the next xbox outside of the small audience of hardcore loyalists. Gamepass has single-handedly fucked the xbox division and taken it so far down that it's truly pathetic in every sense of the word.

Their plan is to grow their services.

If call of duty can't grow your subscription service then nothing can. Gamepass is a failure on both the PC front and console front and they need to shut it tf down before it does even more damage to the brand. They had dreams of reaching 100 million subscribers with gamepass and they can't even reach 40 million.

The die hard loyalists are holding on but the mainstream doesn’t care about renting games. Imagine getting excited about games coming to a rental service and bragging about it?!?!

Ya people on the series s/x reddit are convinced that people are going to buy the next xbox just for gamepass. No one is going to buy a console for a subscription service outside of the small diehards who are holding onto the xbox brand for dear life. I'd also argue that xbox lost a majority of the diehard fanbase to playstation and nintendo in their pivot to third party because alot of the console warriors or platform loyalists feel betrayed by the switch meaning they've lost a chunk of that audience as well.

I legitimately don't see anyway out of this for the xbox division and phil spencer as i've said 9000 times over is one of if not the biggest embarrassments of a CEO in gaming history. He banked everything on gamepass and now that it's failed he has 0 answers because they bought 2 publishers to bolster it and still no one gives two craps about it.

I think people may be reading too much to the talk that they are developing a new console, a handheld, that there are SDKs out there.

I worked for a bit at Microsoft, and if I have ever seen a company that doesn’t hesitate to pull the trigger for a headshot, that’s them. It doesn’t matter if there is work done, companies acquired or costs incurred, with a single email and Teams call, it can all go away.

The way things are going, it will be an extremely hard sell-in to the board to get them give a greenlight to launch another hardware generation. There will be a board meeting where they need to make the case, and if they miss, the plug will come out very very fast.

They said the same thing about series S back in 2020, that millions of people will want a cheap gamepass machine and it's gonna kill playstation
That's what happens when those making decisions are behind the times. 2009 is the critical moment when League of Legends was released. From that point on, free to play games start to dominate. And as such any kind of "bundle" where you rent to access tonnes of products that you mostly don't need, was no longer a bargain but expensive.

Now of course, there are still people willing to pay. But when you are trying to get literally "millions" of gamers on your service, you need to realize what titles such casual gamers are actually playing. And Gamepass was designed with the assumption that people WANT to keep swapping game titles and will pay a fee for that.

The reality as it stands, is that millions of gamers play less than three games a year, and many of them play only one game for years and years. Some of them still pay to play like CoD, but many others don't pay entree fees at all. And Gamepass just offers NOTHING to them. And by having nothing to offer, Gamepass can never reach their ideal subscriber numbers.

I think it will be the same as it’s been. Just no exclusives. Still the best place to buy games if you have a console and pc and don’t want to buy multiple copies.

If they release a good handheld it will have all 3 main ways to play games with your catalog.

Yeah I really like the Play Anywhere thing the problem is too few games used it.

But it's killed decision paralysis/waiting for price drop when I can't decide whether I want to commit to a PC or console version for what few games that do. Then too, it has to be a game that won't be impacted on PC being trapped in the Xbox app. It doesn't add up to many games in the end.

I think offering this is a bit iffy for publishers because they make a lot on double even triple dipping.

this is what I keep saying and nobody listens to me. GamePass is designed for NeoGAF forum posters, people who want to play tons of games a year. That's nice, for NeoGAF forum posters, but NeoGAF forum posters are the aberration.
