74 episodes, barely any filler and the dub is excellent.

Steins;Gate. It starts kind of slow but once you get going it goes like a freight train. It is only 24 episodes which means you aren't committed for a long timespan.

The anime is iirc #4 on myanimelist (Also it was #2 for a long time) and the VN is #1 on VNDB. It is an incredible story.

I feel like a new version of both the game and anime is released every year, so I never knew when to start it. What version of the VN is best?

Bible Black.

all jokes aside, most of the suggestions above are great. in your case, I personally would go for Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood first, then the old Berserk anime or the new 3 movie series (don't watch the new 2 seasons series which is trash tier). then Ghost In The Shell, both the 2 movies and the Stand Alone Complex series. add Cowboy Bebop, original 2 seasons Code Geass and Black Lagoon in there. and everything in the Studio Ghibli collection.

Hah, I was just about to come into this thread and shout Solo Leveling but you got it covered.

Berserk is a good adult anime, but the manga is better. Goblin Slayer is also more dark, but focuses on fantasy setting and strong male protagonist. Claymore is like a female version of Berserk, very violent, dystopian, but with women as main characters.

If you like more lighthearted but similar level up/fantasy idea, Campfire Cooking in Another World with my Absurd Skill is pretty damn fun. There are a ton of isekai anime along those lines.

ARRGGH! HE'S A FUCKIN LOBSTER!!!!!

Cant see Kengan Ashura in anyones list yet which is a crime.

6 or so episodes in I saw the main character and his rival. "Yup, I've seen this plot before" I thought to myself. "And look at this other guy, it a massive old dude in a Gi, that's the coolest character I've ever seen! Bet he goes out in the first or second round, he is here to make to other guys look good"

Seriously. Best anime I've seen in years.

"He is on another level!"

The usual suspects:

Cowboy Bebop
Akira
Ghost in the Shell
Jin-Roh
Legend of the Galactic Heroes
Petlabor 1 & 2
Stuff by Hayao Miyazaki (his movies are for all ages, imho)

I can also recommend Dandadan, even though it's a Shounen manga/anime (manga is also heavily recommended!) It's hilarious and cool. Also the best depiction of a romance in a manga like that, imho.

The original vn is best. Iirc it comes with the new version (steins gate elite) which is just the vn with art from the anime.

There are 2 animes which are different series, steins gate and steins gate 0. Steins gate 0 is a sequel of sorts.

No one really mentioned Akira?

OP is asking for anime from the last 25 years, but agreed that the peak for adult oriented anime was around 1982-1995 with Akira being one of the best. I'm also a big fan of the anthologies from this period like Neo Tokyo, Robot Carnival, and Memories along with basically everything from Yoshiaki Kawajiri (Wicked City, Demon City Shinjuku, Ninja Scroll).

Ok all I am trying to watch this and I find it frustrating as hell. I am 23 episodes in and

I really must be missing something. Why the hell is everyone still after Tenma after all these years? He's always had an alibi. There is no proof he has killed anyone. He LITERALLY helps anyone he comes across including Lunge. Yet the police are STILL after him and even come up with, well maybe he has split personality. Other f'ing murders occur while he is with other people. So I can see *maybe* if the timeliness is straight up 5 or 6 months and they are trying to pin stuff on him. No, it has been literally years later and they're like, Tenma did it.. Hell I told my wife at this point, they'll kill a vagrant, kill tenma, pin it in him and finish the series. Am I missing something????
