What will next gen graphics look like?

Try looking at some screenshots instead of a Youtube comparison.

There are plenty of those that show even less difference. They tend to sell the PC version even more short because you cant see some of the motion blur differences and such.

If you just look at screens they look 90% the same game, which isn't so.

No it didn't, and far-cry came out in early 2004. Hl2, Doom3 and Far Cry all stood toe to toe with the launch titles.

F.E.A.R (October 2005) was in some ways prettier than 360's Condemned, and the F.E.A.R port to consoles might have had bloom added, but otherwise it was worse looking and running.

It really doesn't matter to me. Games are still going to cost millions and millions to make, so it's up to developers to use the power :b

The fact that those games maxed out on PC are so technically improved over what is possible on consoles, and some people are not really impressed or don't see that much of a difference...There's really going to be a lot of disappointment next gen :lol.

Apart from few levels , BF3 while technically was great but art wise it was bland.

Art matters more to me, One Reason why i was impressed by witcher 2 but the animation was laughable.

Really? Have you played them on a PC or just going by screenshots/videos? Playing Metro 2033 maxed out blew me the hell away. First time playing BF3 on Caspian border was also a "holy shit" moment.

i removed metro from the list because i have not played it.

Have played BF3 on ultra on my mate pc.

Like what's been said - current day mid-high range PC visuals. Think BF3 on max.

No. Definitely not mid to high range.
High range or beyond.
Look at the best looking games 2005 (far cry, doom 3). the xbox 360 is far beyond those games on medium-high in terms of graphics.
Hell, I'd even say xbox 360 games look better than far cry or doom maxed out (with the hardware of 2005, not considering any mods today).

Everything will be tessellated to fuck.

Although people seem to think that the graphics won't be similar to what PC can do now. Because PC's require large, power hungry cards consoles have a major advantage called optimisation.
Coding directly to the hardware without having to worry about a lot of different configurations can make all the difference.
Try making something like forza 4 run on a PC with the same spec of GPU and 512Ram.

Samaritan LOL.

The open ended question of what next gen graphics will look like is more fun, we're going to get close to photo realistic in certain genres. NBA2k16 will be ridiculous.

You'll be looking at a huge gap, at least 4-8X more RAM, shaders, etc.

When you compare BF3 max on PC and BF3 on consoles you CANNOT compare 720p videos or screenshots. That's soooo stupid.

Upscale the console version to 1080p and use native 1080p for the PC on max and the difference is absolutely monumental. It's not even funny.

Sometimes I wish TVs wouldn't have all those fancy filters and advanced upscalers, then some console players would see the raw output. It's not pretty fyi.

As for the next-gen, I expect 60FPS standard.

I still can't see current gen PC games being what next gen consoles games will look like. The Witcher 2 looks god damn amazing, but when I compare it to Uncharted 3 or God of War 3, it doesn't look a full console generation ahead. Maybe the first run of next gen console games will look similar to TW2 and the DX11 version of Crysis 2.

60fps will not happen, don't know why people keep setting themselves up for disappointment.

Definitely agree. I would like to think there will be more 60fps games, and ideally it would become the standard for shooters just like it's the standard for racing and fighting games, but there won't be any universal framerate standard. I'd at least like to hope we get a 1080p standard though.

I will be terribly disappointed and not sure if I will jump into next gen if it just looks like high end PC graphics..they really need more than that..shit the graphics we have have now Im fine with that. "High end PC" just isnt enough, the jump is not big enough at all..

Everything will be tessellated to fuck.

"Fire on those tesselators boys!"

"Which one sir?"

"All of them!"

"Aye"

"And get me Chris Tilston on the phone"

"What for"

"He needs to make a butt ugly Perfect Dark game with every graphics feature known to man set to 'ON' "

"Even cel-shading, SSAO, MSAA, AA, ray-tracing, HDR, Tesselation, Object Blur, Edge Blur and Motion blur?"

"ALL OF THEM AT THE SAME TIME!"

1080p 60fps standard? Not happening.

4K definitely not happening...What?

1080p/60fps is pretty dubious, this is just hilarious, haha.

Put down the crack pipe son.

Why is 1080p dubious? Some games are already in 1080p on console already and many normal games can be run at 1080p on mid-range PCs with > 30fps.

60fps maybe something to dream about but 1080p should be the standard for next gen.

What with 6 core processors and 2 GPUs in the latest xbox 3 rumours, it's totally possible.

4k res is just me dreaming. :P

Bf3 maxed out doesn't look that much better than the console version (I've played both) So...

It looks way better, but I wouldn't call it even a generation gap, I'd call it a better looking version of the same game. I could post plenty of comparison screens proving this too.

Do you need LASIK surgery, brah?

My prediction is that graphics are not going to be the priority. The consoles are going to try to go after the causals and the launch prices are going to be some of the lowest we've seen. First gen launch titles will not look as good as what the PC is capable of today.

What with 6 core processors and 2 GPUs in the latest xbox 3 rumours, it's totally possible.

The 2 GPU rumor seriously stinks of bullshit.

Is there a PC vs console pics vs thread for any games not just BF3 cause I really dont think a jump to PC will be enough..enlightened me yall.

If you need a high resolution sample to tell them apart. The difference probably isnt that big.

Am I the only one hoping, and to a degree expecting, that they will start to rapidly plateau?

Games are already incredibly expensive for studios which has to led to some extreme conservatism with development. They can't afford to take risks since the cost of failure has already gotten much too high. Increase the visual quality of games yet another notch and this cost goes even higher with the associated increase in development costs. This is going to lead to decreased innovation and increasingly watered down gaming experiences designed to appeal to the lowest common denominator.

I've been generally disappointed with how little innovation and experimentation there's been in this generation. There's been some serious stand outs like Demon's Souls, but they were far and few between. Some of the more interesting and cutting edge gaming to be had was on Live Arcade. That's just sad. But if the costs of development continue to rise, this is a trend that's going to become ever more prevalent.

Main difference is the resolution, shadows.

So you didn't notice the lower framerate, shoddy textures or lower playercounts? I play on a 40" screen as well. The jaggies are horrendous. Not so much in 1080p with anti-aliasing.

I think we may not see a major bump in medeling, lightening... (see titanic in crysis engine 3)

but more in resolution, framerate, and HOPEFULLY IA, physics.

My current TV is a 37inch Panasonic plasma and the family love it but it only does 720p and 1080i.
I am only interested in 720p and the only thing that will make me change the TV is if it breaks down. To be honest I wish the next gen games had a hardware switch that could offer 720p/60FPS or 1080p/30FPS.

I have a weird outlook on next gen. I have a feeling it'll basically be an extension of the current gen but able to handle 1080p and at a smooth 30fps. Trying to articulate what I mean is kind of odd. Of course it'll have better effects going on but I think it's more about the ability to do a lot of the high end effects from this gen at once instead of just focusing on a couple. This gen some games have great motion blur, lighting, etc but rarely at the same time and rarely at 720p and a steady framerate. Next gen I'm hoping will be able to handle a lot of this stuff simulataneously and smoothly at 1080p. I think the tech to do it is feasible and not too expensive. Quick hard drives and disk drives will also help with a lot of streaming issues from this gen. I think quality motion blur will also help a lot to make 30fps games look smoother so I think we'll see it a lot more next gen. I hope I articulated this OK. I'm really tired right now.

Do you remember what the 360's launch titles looked like? They were pretty embarassing. Those 3 PC games (+ F.E.A.R.) on max were easily more impressive.

kameo looked amazing

amaaaaaaaaaaaaazzziing. def same with pd0 (waits for that one fugly screenshot)

I expect the first year to be higher res versions of the current franchises we have now.
Then we will get the re-mixed versions of current games that were popular such as a new gears of war trilogy but running with better lighting and some new textures.
And then we will see the progression of current franchises but with all new physics and lighting etc.
Yet I will still be standing there day 1 midnight launch. I am actually more excited for the next gen that I have ever been for any other gen.

Either a market crash will happen or the final plateau of graphics pushing probably won't be reached til things like onlive become the natural medium for big budget games. If that happens developers would be restricted only by how much they want to spend on graphics.....even then new tech will always continue to be created that will push graphics further. And let's not forget developers are just as big of graphics whores as some of us. They want to keep pushing the edge and improving graphics.

There's a niche for xbla type games and if thats your thing embrace it. I do agree innovation has suffered to a degree but I also think a lot of developers weren't ready for this era of development, and we saw that with lots of Japanese developers. I feel like many got a hand on it later in the console cycle and things should be smoother next gen since the transition won't be so radical.

Lots of games running at 720p, not enough running at 1080p. Shitty 30fps as the norm, but some developers will still struggle to lock that, and a few shining beacons of hope running at locked 60fps.

At least 5 games will be sub-HD @ 30fps. You read it here first.

This is why I got rid of my GTX580 gaming PC, higher res versions of current games just are not worth the investment of a gaming PC and the hassles it brings yet I thing the next gen of consoles will bring me the satisfaction of buying one.
Love the farcry/kameo screengrabs above, but kameo can look a lot better than that.
