Why are iPhone batteries so shit?

Apple -> About this Mac -> System Report -> Power -> Full Charge Capacity. The stock full charge capacity for an rMBP in 2015 is around 8500-8900mAh. So if you see, say, 4200mAh, you know your battery is tanked. Apple will replace your battery under AppleCare, which you have for free for the first year of ownership.

Well this was depressing. I just checked for my macbook air and I am at 6200 ish mAH. Sigh

Not sure if this is the best place to post, but I got my first iphone around spring of last year. 6plus. Use it all the time and just now started giving me issues. I'm using the same charge cable as ever, but is now giving "device not compatible' messages and not charging. Went from no green charging image, to no lightning bolt that shows it's plugged in. What do I do?

Clean the junk out of the port. That's a pretty common issue: it get filled with lint and dust from your pocket. A paper clip or a hypodermic needle should do the job.

Went in but didn't seem like anything was in the port. Battery is nearly dead and the screen just turns off (was below 10 percent when I found out). Worried now the pictures I have on it will be lost, they weren't backed up.

Can you double check the cable is working. Those things die out too.

If it is the battery well backup shit you want to save or icloud

Seems like an appropriate place to requote:

Looks like Apple has issued a repair program for some iPhone 6S which have been identified as having a battery issue:

https://www.apple.com/support/iphone6s-unexpectedshutdown/

This sounds very similar to the same program that affected some iPhone 5 models.

I've seen a lot of people, specifically with iPhone 6S in this thread complaining about it, so looks like you may have a recognised fault.

Worth checking out anyway.

And yes, a bulk of "charger doesn't work" is typically:

1) Gunk in the port - a lot of people insist it's clean, but it can be compacted right at the back. When the lightning cable is in, there should be very little give, and it should be perfectly flush with the phone.

2) Damaged cable - check other cables and that cable on other phones to ascertain.

3) corroded contacts. Slight moisture and passing current through will corrode contacts. Look for any oxidation on them, such as green gunk. Check both the cable and the port.

When you plug the cable in, is there any metal on the cable visible? The plastic on the connector should be flush with the bottom of the phone. If it's not flush, there's junk in there.

Also as mentioned above, buy a new cable, or borrow someone else's to see if that's an issue.

If it's still an issue, check your warrantee. I've had my phone for 3 years and the battery is starting to fuck up now, a relatively new phone like a 6 should be fine.

Looks like it was the cable, thought I had checked that but it was right at bed time so I wasn't all there. Thanks for the help, everyone!

Posted this in the iOS 10 thread as well, but this weekend my iPhone 6 (pretty sure it's a 6 and not a 6s as I posted in that thread) wouldn't charge at all using 2 different chargers and after cleaning the fuck out of the chargers and the port on the phone. What solved it? Fucking upgrading to iOS 10. Pretty sure they just forced me to do the upgrade.

People grossly exaggerate how good the battery life is, I'm convinced. I had the 5s,6+,and 6s and all I remember is how shit the battery life is. I went to a Pokemon Go bar crawl downtown a few months ago with my friends and my phone died way before everyone else's who had Galaxys.

I actually switched back to iPhone to the 6 because the android phones I have used (Samsung, nexus) all had awful battery life. They literally died in 2-3 hours.

I have been pretty happy with the iPhone battery life except with Pokémon Go. I have no clue why that app destroys the battery life on my iPhone.

Pokemon Go is a known battery hog, judging the battery life while using that consistently is not a good way to go about it.

Higher charge currents degrade capacity over time. If y'all want to keep your capacity stop charging at 1000mA (Not entirely practical of course).

Leaving a device connected to a charger does not have an adverse effect on the capacity. As full capacity is reached the current drops and will then just trickle as and when the device requires it whilst still connected.

As a fan of Android I feel like iPhone batteries are usually better than Android ones.
As for batteries generally being shit, battery technology isn't keeping up with portable technology, batteries have been behind for a while now.

Weird. I've never had any issues with iPhone batteries. My 6S Plus was solid as is my 7. On the other hand, I really like android phones but the batteries on most of those are the main disappoint to me. They just drain so quickly. Happened to my Evo, Note 3 and Note 7. Someday we'll get a phone that is the total package, brand names be damned.

On ios10, I've had a couple times where the cable wasn't fully recognised. I don't think it's specifically iOS 10, but after a hard reset, it was recognised.

I don't think the upgrade fixed your issue, but perhaps a hard reset may have helped.

With ANY issue that may be software related, here is the hierarchy of things you should try:

1) kill the app you are using and restart it.

2) toggle some settings related to the issue you're having (i.e. if wifi is flakey, try turning that off and on again).

3) Soft reset your phone (turn of and on again by holding the sleep/wake button for a couple seconds and sliding to turn off)

4) Hard resetting your phone (similar to above, really, but it will clear some other caches and things out in addition - sometimes people just go straight to this). -> Hold sleep/wake and home button down together until you see the device power down AND keep holding under the apple logo reappears. This is about 5-10 seconds.

5) If a physical issue, consider checking some of the physical connections, trying the physical components on other devices, and ther components on your devices.

6) Consider resetting the the aspects of the device related to your issue -> not all aspects will have a reset, and be aware the reset may mean you need to re-set up parts of your phone. For example, if your issue is a wireless connection issue, consider resetting connections and networks, which will clear wifi passwords. There is also a catch all "reset settings", which doesn't erase anything, but basically resets all settings to defaults, which can help if thing like accessibility options have been turned on and you don't know which ones, or where to find them.

7) there may be some alternative fix to the issue, but before you precede to below ones, it's usually a better idea to exhaust other avenues before doing the last resort issues below.

8) Update your device, possibly to latest iOS. You can try an update in place via iTunes, which will replace the operating system with anew copy, in case of a corrupted installation, for example.

9) RESTORE your device with backup. This entails erasing your device and restoring it using a backup (MAKE A BACKUP). This is the penultimate solution. it can be a real pain to go through this, and it can also cause some headaches you weren't expecting (for example, some things aren't included in the backup, and you may no longer have access to that stuff), so I usually recommend this as last resorts. You'd have to weight up the time lost and potential new issues from doing this with your issue at hand. It's entirely possible, that the process goes smoothly (and usually does), but do consider it.

10) RESTORE your device and set up as new. The ultimate last resort. You will lose all data that isn't using the cloud as a sync conduit. Ultimately, it's like getting a new device. IF this does not sort your issue, then it's a fault with the device, or inherent bug to the version of iOS you're using with your setup, or with your account (if it comes back when you log in).
