Windows Phone 8.1 |OT| Update 1

Surface team makes GOAT tier hardware. I'm perfectly fine with them taking over hardware on the phone side. I just hope the members of this forum are ok with their jobs.

To be fair, they were never going to keep two separate music subscription services around.

Would make no sense.

They should bring some of the app devs from mixradio over to Xbox.

Better yet get rid of the piece of shit Xbox Music and just go with MixRadio at least that app work.

As for the layoff well you can see where Microsoft is heading. It was not a surprise they would canned most of the Nokia employees. Microsoft never want to be in manufacturing business and they would rather outsource than building their own. I don't know how long Nokia would survive on its own, the company was pretty bloated but I still would prefer a separate Nokia phone than the one swallow up by Microsoft and chop up like they did with all other company they acquired.

Really? I think the Surface is ugly, heavy and poorly design as far as reliability. The first version they opt for low resolution screen, the new version is probably the best but still suffer from all type of hardware issue from wifi still not working to power cord malfunctioning.

Surface design is boring, just another black and silver box. I'm on WP because of the colorful unique design, lose that and I'm out.

Surface is aimed at companies and productive types. Of course it's not going to be very flash, that's why the optional colourful keyboards exist.

Nah, pretty sure Microsoft was looking to get into hardware manufacturing when Ballmer was still in play. The shift from device and services to mobile and cloud just means maybe they don't want to do manufacturing anymore. Essentially there's not much differences between devices/services vs. mobile/cloud in this day and age except for actually manufacturing hardware at a large scale. Regardless, there will always be cuts when such large scale mergers take place, but cutting half of the organization does indicate a major shake-up and a major refocus on what the organization does. Still, it's not like they could have 12k people lying around doing nothing.

Surface screens have always been amazing regardless of resolution. Well if you think Surface is ugly... I believe you're in the minority with that opinion.

How many magensium black and silver box devices you have out there in the market? I certainly don't see where the "another" comment comes from.

doesn't make any sense. MS were already building the OS - why even buy Nokia in the first place if you're going to just outsource hardware production?

So are iPhone cases but I still dropped Apple because I liked Nokia's design.

I'd take the ZuneHD / Surface industrial designs for a phone, Nokia's phones have left me underwhelmed for a long time now, the 800 was their last beautiful handset and it was a repurposed 808 chassis. I'll probably be in the minority about this though.

Have you ever seen a Surface Pro 3? I would assume not. Surface is pretty much top tier in terms of design, materials, and quality.

Not to mention, I would imagine that a Surface phone wouldn't look much different from the Lumia 930.

So at this point, Microsoft is mainly just inheriting Nokia's tech, but not what makes Nokia "Nokia".

Hmm.

Don't know about that. According to the Elop letter engineering work is still being done in Finland. Just not manufacturing.

Our phone engineering efforts are expected to be concentrated in Salo, Finland (for future, high-end Lumia products) and Tampere, Finland (for more affordable devices).

Really sucks for the Finnish manufacturing sector of course no doubt and horrible for the families affected.

Because Nokia didn't want to focus on Windows Phone alone anymore. Go to the global Nokia.com site and you'll see the X phones plastered all over it.

Nokia moved manufacturing away from Finland a long time ago.

18,000 jobs is a stunning number to be cut. I hope all affected folks and families are able to find meaningful employment in short order. It's difficult to stay enthused for the new OS update knowing in the back of my mind that many employees were laid off to bring it to us.

On an unrelated note, does anyone have experience with upgrading a phone while on contract -- but before the two year agreement is complete? My mom still has a year left on her contract with Verizon, but her phone is near useless, and I'd like to buy her some flavor of Lumia for her birthday (she loves the way my 928 works).

I imagine I'd need to purchase an unlocked Lumia, swap in my mom's SIM card, and then activate the new device online (which I believe is free of charge). But my mom doesn't have a data plan -- would that complicate things? I seem to recall Verizon telling me at one point that in order to use a smartphone on their network, you have to purchase a data plan, but hopefully that only applies to phones subsidized by a contract. My mom never uses data (outside of MMS, which is wrapped into her overall messaging allotment), so it'd be ideal for her to keep her current plan and deactivate the data services on the new phone. That way she could use the phone for calls and texts, and also potentially use Wi-Fi for fancier tasks.

Yes, I have. I played with it the first day it came out at Best Buy. I love the screen, the pen but hate how big and heavy (not to mention expensive) it is. I would welcome a 8" version for doodling and note taking.

The 930 and the Icon are ugly and very uncomfortable to hold and I agree that is what Surface phone would be.

Another thing about Mixradio is the wider reach. Xbox Music, like everything MS, is US first.

It's a great loss. Shame.

The Nokia deal never make sense but with Nokia going to Android I think Microsoft want to at least get all the Nokia patents and designs.

Again, this was Ballmer vision of Devices and Services but with him got canned you can see where the new CEO is taking Microsoft. It will be about cloud services and productivity.

I was looking forward to some of there programs, but with stuff like Netflix it doesn't make sense to compete with that.

Okay, what is this Meme. I see it all the time and have no idea.

Thats a simple thing though. Just put some die in the melting pot when molding the case

Well they get the tech and they can use that to go after android manufacturers more. Also its not like they are dropping every designer and engineer, so they still leverage the skill that made Nokia, Nokia.

A couple years ago in Canada (before everyone changed to tabs) you would just go to the carrier and pay off the remaining amount on your plan for an early upgrade, the amount listed being written in your contract. Not sure if you can do the same thing in the states, but I dont see why they wouldn't allow someone to upgrade early for a fee.

I love the Surface team, but I fully know that there's never going to be another Lumia phone as well designed as the white 920. That thing was/still is glorious.

The guy who was behind Nokia's impressive cameras already jumped ship to Apple a few months ago.

One of them. There were a bunch of people working on PureView cameras. There was also a whole lot of noise when one of the main camera guys jumped ship a couple of years ago, yet Nokia ended up releasing the 1020 and blowing everybody's minds. It's difficult to say what kind of talent Microsoft has managed to keep.

VaporMg is likely to still be far more expensive to manufacture than plastic phones, so fully replacing them to Surface-like designs will never work unless Microsoft decides to abandon the low to mid end.

That one is still in production and they'll release it with the MCC, as they've announced. Probably too late to cancel it, but I'm sure the show about NAS won't make it. AWWW.

There's 2 Halo shows. There's Halo Nightfall which comes with MCC, that's with Ridley Scott and Sergio Mimica-Gezzan, and it's more like a movie released in 5 parts. But then next year there was a Spielberg produced Television Series, as well. I assume that Spielberg one is cancelled?

edit: nvm, from Phil Spencer's pull quote: http://www.zdnet.com/microsoft-to-close-xbox-entertainment-studios-7000031735/
...the upcoming game franchise series ‘Halo: Nightfall,’ and the ‘Halo’ Television series which will continue as planned with 343 Industries.

Hold on, friend! I'd love to share with you some swell news about the Windows 8 Metro UI! Wait, where are you going?

It seems like you want a pure tablet which is not what the SP3 is. It's extremely light for what it is and the 12 inch screen is designed for doing work, not casual note taking and web surfing (although you can obviously use for that as well). Both in weight, size and price it's competing with ultrabooks, not regular tablets. I have no problems holding it over my head in bed (even with 1 hand) and reading magazines or comics.

If you want an 8" windows tablet there are already options available for relatively cheap.

I must be doing something wrong, I just added an entry on my phone, attached to my google account, and it appears on the phone calendar but not on the web page. While tasks that had been added through the web page or from external invitations appear on my phone.

*edit : strike that. It did appear on the web page after some time. So it kind of works, although I do remember adding entries during meetings that I never found back on my main calendar. Strange.

Just when I thought compatibility had improved, my phone just failed to synch my contacts with my Google account, and deleted all of them but 2 (although they're still on the Google web interface, so they're not lost).
