Xbox Series SSD is not soldered on to the motherboard like PS5 is

It depends on number of writes, as ps5 is not writing game saves and states for every game to the SSD its life will be around how often you install games,a nd with modern SSD not an issue.

They are "writing game saves and states for every game to the SSD" though - that's exactly what the reserved area is for. I'm also quite sure they will be doing wear levelling across the whole drive - simply because you would have to be an idiot to do it any other way and I don't think Sony's engineers are idiots.

And why I said I would turn such stuff off as a default, but thats just me as I dont sue it, but dont want to be writing large chunks to SSD all the time.

Well, it was expected, good to have confirmation. Most interesting to me is that this is a Gen3 drive, even though it was said that it's Gen4. Not complaining, makes replacing it a little easier (even though 1TB 2230s are hard to come by).

But I do wonder if we'll ever be able to replace this with a 2TB drive. I don't see 2TB 2230s coming anytime soon unless we find a new way to stack NAND tomorrow... Major Nelson has mentioned different form factors for the expansion card for a reason. 2TB SSDs will most likely use 2242.

So, MS put a shelf item on the part that violates the warranty and a specific item on the expansion. And you guys see this as good news?

According to the specs of this SSD it uses an in-house WD controller but weren't there very strong rumours of it using a Phison controller?

Surprised to see just how off the shelf this seems to be and how easy the heat sink lid comes off (in the teardown video). I still doubt swapping it out it would just work. It never is that easy.

wow did not know they made a 1TB variant in the small form factor 2230 but now i google it they are widely available. I am very curious if they can be easely replaced or that you brick the system. seems to me this needs to be autenticated and labelled by the os?

It's hard to say, but if it's like the xbox one then it's formatted using standard Windows tools as a GPT disk with a specific partition structure and specific partition UUIDs - you can get any drive and partition it to the spec, copy a system update file into the update partition and the console will set it up.

Note that (unlike the 360) there are no cryptographic drive labels or anything like that - the disc just has to have the correct layout with the right partition IDs and it will work once it's initialized.
