I remember reading the scrolls from the monks where state that not only Yasuke ascended to be the first black samurai, but also was rewarded with fire weapons, a car and a motobike. He was the first human in history to use an Ak-47 and a sniper rifle.
Different from Ubisoft this one is actually being historically accuracy.

Tom Cruise didn't portray William Adams.
I mean the movie wasn’t great but Tom Cruise wasn’t a samurai there nor was he “The Last Samurai”. That was Ken Watanabi’s character.

That said if Ubi stuck William Adams in there as protagonist instead of Yosuke, it would also be annoying.

Both of these would make good or great NPC characters or DLC ones in AC Shadows, but not protagonist.

He didn’t portray a samurai either.
That's because historically there actually was one. His name was William Adams and the book Shogun is loosely based on him.
Would there have been so much noise about not playing as a Japanese though? Even though you can play as one.

I think most folks wouldn’t have liked it either. Folks just wanted a Japanese MC in a Japanese Samurai game.

Having two MCs with Naoe being one of them would have been fine. Having Samurai character unable to climb certain spots and mandatory switch to the other character would also not be great no matter who the MC is.

I think you might be correct. I’m not sure how much the Japanese or Asian communities would have complained. I mean, people bitched about Nadine being voiced by a white woman in Uncharted even though they never complained about Kratos being voiced by black men.

There definitely would have been a degree of controversy if it were a white guy. I wonder how much though.

Nioh came out and I think the only people that complained were a few on the purple forum. No massive outrage machine about it though. Come to think of it, Yasuke was a samurai in that game as well.

This is a bit different for a number of reason.

The main one is that Nioh came out in 2017 and the climate was not anywhere near as virulent as it is now. Another one is that Nioh never many any pretense about being historically accurate. Finally, AC games have always had someone representative of the setting as the main character. However, there was outrage the moment we learned that Yasuke would star in the game, before anything was even known, so it's hard to tell how much of the criticism was genuine (a lot of it isn't and is blatant racism, let's not lie). If I'm going to be fair, I don't think there would have been much controversy if Nioh starred Yasuke instead of Williams Adams. That Nioh was made by a Japanese studio also made it immune to accusations of DEI. Who will tell Japanese people who they can or cannot have as a samurai in their games?

This talk of Yasuke not being a Samurai is getting a bit stale, even Metatron on YouTube thinks there is a really good chance he was one, due to being given a weapon, land, and a stipend. Metatron is hardly someone who alters the truth for political beliefs.

if Assassins Creed Shadows had a white samurai there would be zero outrage about the game.
There was one bro, turns out this white guy managed to convince the Japanese to side with UK and banish the Spaniards or something like that

Nioh's character is loosely based on that person, I think

It's very likely he was one. However, him being a "legendary warrior" is most certainly a fabrication. He only took part in one battle and it's unknown what his exact role was, but the fact that he was at Nobunaga's side along with his commanders during an inspection following a victory, was given a stipend, a house, a sword, and was believed to be in line to be made a minor lord, strongly points to him having been a samurai. It's impossible to 100% prove or disprove because the rules surrounding the class/job weren't more formalized until Hideyoshi took over, more than a decade after Yasuke left historical records. He's the one who banned peasants from carrying weapons, so in the 1600s, someone carrying a sword was basically a confirmation they were a samurai. During Yasuke's time, the class wasn't something super duper special (and it never really was either because at one point, a huge portion of the population were samurai).

Thomas Lockely's embellishment also didn't help. If Ubisoft had simply stated, "play as a fictionalized version of Yasuke, the historical black samurai", there would have been much less ammo against them. Calling him a historically legendary samurai warrior was a shot in their own foot.

He was also the first Samurai to utilise the Sony Walkman in combat and frequently listened to hip-hop beats to terrify and demoralise his enemies.

90% of those who are angry about it are hardly history buffs lmao. You think a bunch of gamers are frothing due to historical inaccuracy in an AC game?

Not enough hip hip though, doesn't feel authentic enough.

Yup. William Adams wouldn't be any better.
If you need to go find some historical figure as the main protagonist in an AC game because they would otherwise feel out of place or forced, then you are doing something wrong.
There's a reason every other AC game hasn't had an issue using fictional main characters....until now.

There's no "outrage" about the fact that they chose Yasuke, just a lot of eye-rolling and jokes. If they had picked a white guy then there would be actual outrage by the mentally ill degenerates over at the purple asylum and all the people who support that way of thinking.

With all the talk about "Chuds" needing to make their own games/media if they don't like the woke stuff out there, watch how fast this gets pulled. Shows this all about silencing people after all.

Fucking wishlisted.
