PlayStation Network Thread (Vita/PS3/PS4) | September 2014

*DanganRonpa 1 Spoilers*
Taka x Mondo is a great pairing. It's too bad that got cut short, and never got a real conclusion.

As for Cho Aniki, I can understand your feeling about that. I personally think it's all done in the spirit of playfulness with tongue firmly in cheek, but when that makes up a large portion of gay portrayals in Japanese media, it can seem tedious. Gay sexuality is always the joke, especially when it's between muscular men. And a lot of things don't treat with the good natured humor that Cho Aniki does. Some of it is down right mean.

I can't even imagine what gay gamers in Japan have to deal with. I've been told that no one sees it as a big deal, but I find that very hard to believe. Everything has to be underground or fan made. It seems that just in the past year or so, it's slowly getting better, but even that seems fueled more by the fujoshi crowd, and not gay men and women. (Not that I have anything against fujoshis, I think it's awesome. Get it girls.)

I'm sorry to be talking so much about it here, but I'm just so damn sick of waiting for developers to catch up to the needs of gay gamers. Stop dipping your toes in, and dive right in! JUST DO IT. START NOW. THANKS.

Which is why, oddly, the whole bara genre seems to work so well lol At least for my needs, artistically speaking. I mean the issue with bara being of course it is almost exclusively pornographic which defeats the entire purpose.

Will my entire folder of Nekomaru pics I've taken in-game suffice?

You know that might do just fine.

TOTP: Hyperdemension of course!!!

Also...consider ND....consider it well.

Bara is my lifeblood, so I know that feel. But it doesn't have to be always underground. Lets bring it into the light of day! Bara on the bus! Bara in the classroom! Bara in every household!!!

Don't get me wrong, don't EVER take away/stop making my "for private use" bara, but there can be M for Mature bara on my Vita/3DS/GameBOXthing! Even some T for Teen bara! Or even some E for Everyone bara!!! It doesn't have to be for adult audiences only. What about a sweet love story between two gay dudes in a cutesy JRPG? Or some hot age-appropriate hunk-on-hunk action in your latest T rated action/puzzle/fighting game? Or some *GASP* datable beefcake in the newest RUB DAT SCREEN Vita title?

Gay sexuality doesn't need to be a secret, or ~implied~ (They briefly brushed hands! What groundbreaking character development!) Just walk right up to my MC and kiss him dammit. Let's go on a F'ing date! I WANNA BUY YOU SWEETS AND CUTE UNDERWEAR AND SEE YOUR AFFECTION POINTS RANK UP.

When do the new PS+ games get announced?

I'd love to see one of those full priced launch games get offered for the PS4....I dont think it will happen though

Although I could possibly see one of the EA Sports games being offered, seeing as though the '15 versions are now out

Its so strange isn't it? We're surrounded, particularly on Vita, on ridiculously oversexed touch big boob tits mcgee games and its just, its absolutely business as usual.

Imagine if one, ONE bara esque game along those lines were released? I CANNOT EVEN

Except for the classic cop-out at the end. Developers love to be ~ambiguous~. (I don't know if this changed in UltraMAX, I haven't played it yet.) The fact that it's even debatable is a problem. And I don't even want to talk about how it's portrayed in the anime.

I want a game where you can say "YEP, HE'S GAY. I'M ALSO GAY. LET'S DO STUFF".

Is this about Kanji? Do they cop-out on his sexuality in the end?

Im only 20 hours in or so.

Heh. I'm gonna keep talking about it until developers step up and do something about it.

And there is a lot of promising stuff lately. The PC has three English bara/yaoi games on the horizon, but it still has yet to truly break into mainstream console gaming.

Others may disagree, but I think so. *Persona 4 Spoilers*
He comes to terms with himself, but what exactly he comes to terms with is left up in the air. The fact that he's gay? Or that he's a straight/questioning dude that's embracing "feminine" hobbies/behavior. (Which is totally fine too, but it's annoyingly obtuse.)

Then he's treated like a joke in the anime, and his recent portrayals seem to be diving head first into the gag ending/character territory.

I still love him, but I hate how he's treated.

With all the Otome and other VNs Idea Factory has been pumping on Vita, I'd love for them to throw us a bone and release a Bara-centric one with characters designed by various mangakas like Matsu, Mizuki, etc. I mean, have you seen how many of those VNs on Vita sell on their first week? I'm sure a Bara VN would be able to reach those numbers and break even.

Another actual P4G spoiler;

I always just assumed he was a bisexual guy who was into Naoto when he thought she was a dude, but was still into her (though less embarrassed about it) when he figured out she wasn't.

I agree though, the anime makes a joke of it and it's kind of sad.

I was trying to be kind. There's people that will fight tooth and nail for either side. I'm all for debate, but not about freaking everything. I want gay characters that are gay, while living open, happy lives! (WHOA.) It's important to portray struggle, but why does it have to be about every god damn thing? (Unless it's a joke?)

But if that was the case, why can't he have a romantic ending with Yu? I'd be super pumped if he was bisexual, but it seems more like, "well, she's actually a girl, so everything is fine now. TOTALLY STRAIGHT KANJI REPORTING." Naoto's story isn't much better.

I think your concerns are super interesting, guys. You should make a thread about it!
Is this a polite way of saying get back on topic? ;)

Sorry. I'll try to reel it in. (Maybe I will make a thread, but I don't know if the mods would be cool with no specific basis for it.)

Not at all, actually! :O I just thought more people would find this topic interesting since it's not something everyone thinks about, even though it's a huge and very real issue. Please don't let me interrupt you!

Hi,
Just got Flower for my PS Vita a few days ago, and is it just me, or the controls make it unplayable? I played it on PS3 and it's an amazing game, but on PS Vita the controls just don't work right. Tried both motion and touch controls, can't do much with either. With motion I can more or so control it but really slowly and imprecise, and with touch I just cant do anything. Can anyone help me?

I've only played it on Vita using the motion controls. It feels slightly "off" for me too, as if it doesn't have the same range of motion as the PS3 & PS4 versions. I've chalked that up to the notion that tilting the system is also tilting the screen, and therefore you're changing your viewing angle of the screen as well. You can't tilt it too much without needing to physically move around, or risk losing your view. The developers must have felt the need to compensate for this.

You don't have this problem with the PS3 & PS4, since your TV screen is stationary. You can tilt and twist the controller much more freely, without affecting your view of the game.

While it certainly feels different, I wouldn't say it's "unplayable". It might take some getting used to on the Vita, but you will eventually get accustomed to it.

Dude I was being generous! You put it in a very nice manner and I was complimenting that! No sarcasm at all!

He could, but maybe they figured that they already stated his love interest
, and that Kanji's not a slut who'll just go for anyone.
Well, we can hope they were thinking that, right? Haha

P4G Spoiler again;
As for the "everything is fine now" bit, I don't think it makes sense for him to be nervous about liking "him" if he didn't accept it to some degree. He was spending an awful lot of time alone with Naoto, after all.

Pretty sure I read a smiliar thread long time ago on GAF, and it looks like a graveyard in there.

That sucks. :/ Yeah, like I said, a lot of people don't have this subject on their radar, like, they haven't spent any time thinking about it so I can see why it would be ignored.

Dude I was being generous! You put it in a very nice manner and I was complimenting that! No sarcasm at all!

Thanks but like I said, it wasn't a "let's get back on topic" post in disguise and you guys should not cease discussing this, in here or elsewhere. I find your feelings on the issue very interesting and I would like to read more, I just thought it would be worth sharing with the rest of GAF.

Heh, no worries. We probably should make a topic, but I don't know really how to approach it. GAY DUDES (AND LADIES) IN GAMES. BEGIN. I really don't want it to be a debate about pros & cons, but rather a discussion about showing support, but I don't know if that's really what GAF is for. Sometimes I feel like you're damned if you do and you're damned if you don't.

We'll probably have the requisite "why should it matter" posts, the "as long as it's not shoved down my throat" posts, the "can't you just assume they're gay?" posts and the always popular "KEEP SEXUALITY/POLITICS OUT OF MY GAMES. EVERYTHING DESEXUALIZED (read: actually straight) FOREVER!!!" posts. Tempers will flair, people will get banned, the topic will fade away into obscurity.

I'd like to hope that wouldn't happen, but I don't know. Hmmmm...

Hence the open for debate stuff. Debating is awesome, I love doing it. I just don't want to do it about every gay character ever. I want full on, straight up gayness.

Add Big Sky Infinity to that list. God that game is so underrated. One of my most played Vita games.

I played the demo and didn't like it, though it -should- be something I love. I guess I'll try again. I had a really hard time seeing bullets, I think?

Help me out VitaGAF. I've decided to finally quit smoking and have two completely free days ahead of me. In order not to go completely nuts over the lack of nicotine I need a good distraction in form of an utterly gripping and captivating game. Something that won't let me put down my Vita for as long as humanly possible and turn my attention away from the obvious struggle. Almost all of my backlog is below and I don't want to buy anything new. The only things you can exclude are: Killzone, MGS3 and FF-X. I still have to finish the last one, but I'm in the endgame phase and don't really want to do it now. Oh, I've also finished P3P and P4G, otherwise there would be no dilemma.
I'd really like something that has either an excellent plot (preferable) or gameplay. I'm kinda leaning towards one of the PSP RPGs I've got there, but I don't really know which to pick.

Congrats on quitting. The world would be a happier, safer place if smoking was healthy.

As for a game recommendation... I think Jeanne D'arc would be perfect for you if you want something very accessible, else Tactics Ogre if you want something meatier, and Yggdra if you want something unique. You can't go wrong with any of those.

Thanks guys, I'll check them out. I got TxK due to PS+, and both Velocity games.

And yes, PSP games count too, if you want to share.

I'm unqualified to give a decent rundown on PSP shmups since I haven't experienced many, though perhaps someone else can. I knoq Everyday Shooter is a unique dual stick shooter meets music by the guy who did sound shapes (platformer meets music). I played it on PS3 though own the psp version too.

I was actually told by a mod that if someone thinks my avatar is too sexual, I'll have to change it. (I asked, they didn't randomly tell me this out of the blue.) I totally understand their position, but we got boobs aplenty on GAF, so I was a bit taken aback. (I did have someone help me shift the view up a bit, to avoid Nekomaru's complete "manliness".)

Male and female sexuality are of course not 100% synonymous, but I do feel like anything related to sexy dudes is held to a stricter standard than ladies. Again, I don't blame the mods at all, but it makes me feel more hesitant to be myself sometimes. I would never purposely break the ToS (I'm too much of a keener, and I truly love posting on GAF), but I have held myself back before.

Though alternatively, I was given permission to make an OT for an upcoming bara/yaoi game on the condition that it's strictly monitored. I don't know if I'll do it though, because I'm still unsure how far is too far, because it's up to the individual mod's discretion. And I want to do the game justice, and I don't know if I can this way.

Well I can't say that I agree with that at all. Tits are a plenty in avatars but I guess a guy in a speedo is too much...

If it makes people uncomfortable, I can understand and they are certainly entitled to their opinion, but it doesn't seem any worse then the standard Versus Avatar.

I agree to that. I would hope they give the same response if you asked about a cleavage avatar. Or any avatar for that matter.

I agree with the Kanji cop out stuff except I was glad they at least vaguely P4G spoilerish
when they asked him about it towards the end of the game it seemed his friends loved and accepted him no matter how ever responded

No, like a graveyard, as in, I saw people getting banned everywhere, lol. It's a pretty sensitive subject (as in anything related to women in video games), and people for some reasons always get worked up over such subject that they can't keep their mouth off. Usually I avoid any topic related to fanservice for the same reason, since I'm not sure if I could be calm around people who dismisses every game with fanservice and look down on people who enjoy them.

Is it? I always thought here on GAF people keep praising whenever there is manservice and trashing fanservice. Eventually they will get bored and leave the thread, but it was tough reading some of the earlier pages in Akiba's trip, where Tom had to bring up there is fanservice for ladies to defend the game, or Demon's Gaze/Dungeon Traveler 2 threads.

This place is actually the most civil and open-minded thread I've been.

Oh, I see what you mean. Yeah, people have pretty strong opinions regarding fanservice. I like it personally, but hey, I don't blame anyone who doesn't. Not to mention that there's very different types of fanservice and so on.

From that Silconera review of Natural Doctrine:

------------------------
2. There is an online multiplayer mode to the game that is completely separate from the single player story mode. In it you build a deck of cards out of the enemy units in the game to make your army. You can go head-to-head and have large-scale tactical battles with your friends almost like the multiplayer mode in Advance Wars. If you do manage to get a game going, it is quite fun, and I imagine will add greatly to the life of the game.

Deck of cards?!?! The MP of the game has deck building? So glad this will be in my mailbox tomorrow.

In my experience it has been. Recently there are a couple prominent threads with gifs of girls with their boobs jiggling up and down, and another one of a lady in wet clothing doing sprints. They're both pretty revealing. If I posted a similar gif of a guy in his underwear with his junk bouncing around, or some nearly naked dude emerging from the pool, it would be removed I'm pretty sure. I get that some stuff is just too much, and this isn't a NSFW site obviously, but sometimes I truly don't get what is and is not permissible here in regards to dudes, so I tend to hold back now. I've spoken with mods before for clarification, and they've said that anything with noticeable bulge on a dude is pushing it too far. (That's why I was told my avatar might be too sexy, because of Nekomaru's junk.) Even the Akiba's Trip thread was altered a bit, because the male cut-ins were deemed "too sexy". Yet in Senran Kagura threads, there's images of guns literally coming out of a girl's underpants in a phallic manner, and ladies mashing their butts together while their clothes explode off. I don't want to start a lockdown on all things sexy, and I don't want anyone to get in trouble so I don't say anything, because I don't want to come off like I'm complaining about a double standard, but I'm always mindful of it.

There is a lot of support for #manservice on GAF, and that's totally awesome, but it seems right now it's more in theory than practice. If a full blown bara game came out for Vita or whatever, would we be able to discuss it openly? That's what I wonder. GAF is what it is, and I want to respect their wishes, but I don't really know of many other places that I could go and discuss gay gaming totally openly and find meaningful and engaging discussion. All the other big forums don't have nearly the same LGBT presence that GAF does, and the alternatives are not that attractive.

It's a conundrum.

You can bet if they start posting those images outside their "safe haven" like Senran Kagura OTs or somesuch mods would be quick to remove them as well.

Perhaps. The non-SK gifs I mentioned above were in topics that are frequented by mods. Anyway, as I said before, I'm not interested in getting people in trouble or seeing those gifs removed (they're not my taste obviously, but I don't think they cross the line), but it is confusing.

I also think it has to do with the general unfamiliarity with male sexuality, at least for some people. Unfortunately, it's not uncommon to see females sexualized in all aspects of media, but seeing men shown in the same light is still a strange concept to some people. The key is balance IMO. I'm a proponent of diversity in all aspects of media, and one of my main interests (obviously~) is an increase in sexy men in video games, film, media, etc., but I don't always know the best way to express that here.

2+2=5

The Amiga Brotherhood
I played Monster Monpiece for 2 hours and imo something went utterly wrong in the development(in before fanservice jokes)

My idea was that it was filled with fanservice, but after a certain amount of time i forgot it and was "immersed" in its "girlish" world, i was thinking that this game was aimed to girls(like Atelier games and Sorcery Saga imo), i mean 2d and 3d graphics, character, world, design, story etc everything seems to be made to appeal girls imo, then at a certain point, when two girls confide and their friendship strengthens here comes the fanservice and this penis shaped animal that really feel out of place in a game like this ruining everything!

I mean 2d and 3d graphics are cute, all girls cast with Sailor Moon-esque characters(
the main character is fearful but with potential like Sailor Moon, one is strong like Sailor Mars and the other is diligent and scholar like Sailor Mercury and an animal looking monster girl cheering the main character like the black cat
) and story(
a Sailor Moon-esque enemy make people evil slaves to steal crystals
) and so on, the fan service really seems pasted!

From a fanservice game i was expecting something completely different!

Imo either:
-the game was meant for girls but for some reason someone decided to add fanservice
or
-the initial idea was made to make a fanservice game but the "wrong" artists and writers were hired

Imo if they made two games, one for each "soul" of the game, both games would have been better, imo a Monster Monpiece without fanservice had the potential to be a successful niche series aimed to girls, without counting that the good card gameplay would have been considered more seriously instead of being overshadowed by fanservice and censoring issues.

Am i the only one that had this impression?

Lol @ Vita shots. But I am surprised. When they said that the Vita game was about investigating murders, I automatically assumed that it was not going to have any action/fighting. Thought the Vita version would be something like Danganronpa (since DR team is involved):p But these shots prove otherwise. Nice.
I'm starting to think that investigations are a story feature and there won't be any investigation in the gameplay :(
Yeah, through Remote Play and a port of a cheap companion iPhone game.

Nomura works on merchandise as well, you know. Him working on a variety of projects doesn't necessarily mean he's got his hand in 15 video games.

Well technically, but it sounded a lot more like "we're on the spot with that question about Tearaway 2 on Vita but we're definitely not doing that" to me.
About Tearaway 2 on Vita developers said that a lot of effort was put on the paper engine so they would like to use it again. :p

About Nomura some of his projects are gaming related :p

With all the Otome and other VNs Idea Factory has been pumping on Vita, I'd love for them to throw us a bone and release a Bara-centric one with characters designed by various mangakas like Matsu, Mizuki, etc. I mean, have you seen how many of those VNs on Vita sell on their first week? I'm sure a Bara VN would be able to reach those numbers and break even.

what otome VNs are they bringing to Vita? My wife would be interested to play

In English? There are only 2, "Hakuoki: Demon of the Fleeting Blossom" and "Sweet Fuse: At Your Side". If you are asking about Japanese ones, then check this list.

like Atelier games

I always thought that aims toward guys? I mean, I don't know since I always games with that kind of artstyle/atmosphere, but when I brought it up as games that aimed for girls, people shot me down because they think the girls are sexualized in those type of games in their designs, not because they aimed toward the female audience.

Also, a lot of my male friends like Atelier since it looks colorful and cute. I'm kinda confused about the whole "games mean for girls", since I haven't had a firm grasp as what's their characteristics. The only thing stands out is Otome game, but aside from that, everything people said aims toward girls, I have seen a large amount of guys also love to play them.

Since i'm a male maybe i have the wrong idea of games aimed to girls, but if you were a developer and want to make a jrpg for girls won't you make something like Atelier story, character and design-wise?
If you wanted to make a tgc game for girls wouldn't you make something like Monster Monpiece without the fanservice part?
Imo yes in both cases.
I don't see how Atelier characters are sexualized, should they wear burqa?
Atelier games are good games so male gamers liking them is not a proof that excludes that Atelier games are aimed mostly to girls imo.

The Atelier games definitely have some fanservicey stuff, but it also goes full on cutesy. It's definitely a dichotomy of ideas, yet it works.

Ha ha, don't ask me. Like I said, I have no idea. I don't even know if girls want more guys present in their games, or they prefer to play as female character. I myself always choose girl avatars in most of my games (unless the model looks suckass, then guy it is), and even with my guild in MMO, among 15 guys there are only 3 of them play as male characters.
