So that new PPG show is really, REALLY bad.

Theres some aspects that I like (a lot of the backgrounds are well designed and I like the intro sequence), but on the whole its a bummer of a show. Watched a few episodes and the occasional bright spot isnt worth drudging through the rest of the show.
If it wasnt Powerpuff Girls it wouldnt be notable but that wouldnt save it from being mediocre.

This disappoints me greatly. I havent watched the show yet but despite all the negative buzz it was getting had a lot of hope for it. Be Cool Scooby Do looked bad in my opinion but a friend sat me down and had me watch it and it's actually pretty good. The decisions they seem to be making in this dont feel right to me. I shutter to think how they handled the character "him" in this show.

Maybe they'll end up adding Ms Bellum back to the show due to fan demand.

Has this show tackled Him yet? Interested to see how they handle it.

They have, and his introduction was pretty lame and poorly thought out imo.

They introduce him with a corny gender confusion joke, he gives the mayor a MacGuffin, and then shows up at the very end to watch the MacGuffin create chaos.
He hardly does anything or interacts with the PPGs and it feels like he was just forced into the episode because they wanted all the old villains in the story despite the fact that it made no sense for any of them to be there. ("Tiara Trouble"- an episode based around a pageant/talent show thing- sounds like something that would be based around the new Fashionista Gang/Bikini Sisters not characters like Fuzzy Lumpkins, The Gangreen Gang, or Mojo, who are all in the episode for some reason)

Remember the first time HIM showed up in classic PPG?
He used the tense "leader vs lancer" rivalry between Blossom and Buttercup to manipulate Bubbles into destroying the team all while pretending to be the only object providing her with comfort through her beloved sisters' bickering, Octi.
The Powerpuff Girls were only able to defeat HIM through achieving peace with each other (you know, because...he's kind of the embodiment of evil and stuff).
It was very well-written and did a great job of introducing a threatening villain with a completely different dynamic.

Sorry to hear that,
as someone who worked on the show (my episode has not aired yet),
everyone seemed to have the heart at the right spot.

If Episode 12 sucks, it will partially be my fault.

Who knows, maybe people will turn around on it like many did with Teen Titans Go. I sure did.

Does your episode include internet memes?

Ugh, especially at the bolded. Him was my favorite villain in the original series, that's too bad.

The intro is REALLY amazing. They should make a full show like that someday. Or like that DDR special episode ...that was beautiful.

Show looks to be kinda ...lost. The trans unicorn episode was a clusterfuck ("lets make an episode about acepting a minority ...by turning it into a MONSTER !!") and the memes might make the show incredibly dated and they still didn't found what made the original soo good. Let's hope they find it someday.

Koolio. Dont take any internet hate too much to heart. Just learn form constructive criticism.

I'll look out for that ep.

Thanks, I will live.

I know I tried hard with the script I got. I never felt anyone was trying to do a bad job.

Might just be that they aimed for a tone that the outspoken core audience is just not into right now.

Same here (it feels like something Bubbles from the classic series would say), but at the same time...I definitely think HIM should've been the first character to say "Yaasss!", it only makes sense and would be a little funny. At least give me that if all you're going to do is use one of the most threatening, powerful, and charming villains from the series for lazy "A-hyuck! That's not a lady! lololol" gender confusion jokes and meaningless menial mischief.
:/

Him invented " Yas" i'm sure of it.

You work in the animation industry? What department/areas are your main focus? I work in the Vancouver side of the industry as a BG Artist, Character Designer, & Storyboard Artist (& sometimes doing Visual Design or BG Clean Up if needed).

And don't feel too bad. At the end of the day, be happy with what you and your team were able to accomplish, and always strive to do better the next time 'round. My boss, who was supervising the design department at DHX Media, had always told us that & it encouraged us to better ourselves.

Also, Teen Titans Go is hilarious and has some genious episodes !

...and is a totally different thing from the original TT and they should not be compared.

Also, watchmen's characters first official animated series appearance was TTG !

I'm a storyboard artist, also Canada.
Currently doing some stuff for 9Story.

I think the best shows on CN are board driven, maybe something like that would have helped here as well. But thats of course something a board artist would say :)

Man, not hearing the original voices is extremely jarring. Takes me right out of it. And the excessive sterile clean-ness of the animation makes it look lower quality compared to the original.

I guess that's why Dilworth ditched it completely and went for 3D in his Courage revival (which also happens to feature most of the old voice cast).

Cool beans. :)

Come to think of it, I actually applied at 9Story this month. I have a gig at Slap Happy Cartoons starting in June, but I'm looking for freelance work in the meanwhile. I'm also waiting to hear back from MOA/Dentsu Entertainment for the Mega Man production they are developing right now, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed for that.

I agree that some of the best cartoons are board driven, but I also find that a good show steams from direction and personality, and each department needs to be in synergy with one-another to make it fly. Collaboration is also key to making a decent board into a great one, and it's probably why I want to work on a series that works off of an outline and board an entire episode, as well as write the dialogue.

Having a mixture of a well experienced crew (with some new blood to train and shoot ideas) drawing storyboards, layouts, and animation, also helps.

I think it's great and I love that they're not just recycling the old episode format. I loved how weird Painbow was.

The leaked episodes from weeks ago were a little weak, but the newer ones that have officially aired are fun. I didn't expect a Hangover parody. I raised an eyebrow, but hey - it had some funny moments.

But, I also like Uncle Grandpa and Teen Titans Go. And I don't think the presence of memes makes something worse (honestly I think the people who complain about memes in media are the pits but ehh).

I've not actually watched either incarnation of the show, but has anyone involved with the production explained why they dropped the thick outlines from the characters? They've kept them looking pretty much identical otherwise, so why ditch the single most distinctive visual feature?

Are thick lines more expensive to animate or something?

Implying you'd be ok with it if it was a Totally Fresh and Hip Meme.

I think using memes in anything off of the internet is cringeworthy, but if they had some dank ass MLG memes i'd probably laugh like a fucking idiot.

But putting memes into shows dates them incredibly quickly. It's a stupid thing to do and it's lazy.

From what understand, the later episodes of the old show used Flash and of course used thicker outlines. So it seems the show disregarded that and it certainly didn't help it.

No it still be as bad and dated.

Memes are a part of popular culture, have been for quite a while now, and probably will be for a long time forever more. So like, guess you guys can keep cringing then?

I don't see why people keep bringing up Teen Titans Go! when that show at least has Darkseid voiced by Weird Al and is self-aware enough to recognize that people's disdain comes from it using the designs from a much beloved DC animated series. Taken on its own, it's an average show, albeit one that suffers from the issue of "why would I watch this when I could be watching the original show?" The same can't be said for the new Powerpuff Girls because it has no redeeming qualities that I could see one watching it for: The animation is subpar, the writing is weak (if not, outright transphobic garbage) and the voice acting is a far cry from the original. That said, I am, in retrospect, glad they didn't cast the original trio (Strong, Daily, Cavandini) because the material they'd have to work with doesn't lend itself well to a good overall show for youths or any funny jokes for adults to pick up on. There's little to no comedic timing and what can qualify as a properly timed joke comes across more as a slap in the face to one's intelligence. The only good that I can see it doing at this point is getting people to check out the original show, an actually funny parody and simultaneous love letter to classic superheros.

So here's the thing.
There was a whole Steven Universe episode specifically based around those little "Hey 90s kids, which_____character are you!?" 2010s buzzfeed-esque quiz things, and it was a very well-written story that used the dumb 2010s quiz thing to tackle one character's multiple short comings and the conflicts they cause with her teammates/family/friends.

The show "We Bare Bears" also heavily features of the era modern day elements like memes, smartphones, and viral videos (one of the reoccurring antagonist is a viral video star) yet still manages to be a very sincere, genuine, clever, and well-written show.

While I don't think PPG 2016 has done a very good job with it's of the era jokes/references (they're often not related to anything), moaning at the very existence of modern day culture leaking into cartoons simply because it's part of our present time is dumb. Animation is made by people, and people constantly experience culture.

It is still incredibly lazy and a cop out from writing actual humor. You don't use memes, if you make something that people find funny and implement it in other ways, it becomes a meme naturally.

Sometimes I don't think people who are outraged at Mojo Jojo in a dress actually saw the scene and instead just saw a screenshot and have become enraged.

Mojo was both dressed up by the girls (he enjoyed the result of his makeover by the way) and also a parody of the baby found in the closet in the Hangover. You can make it out to be some transphobic "haha he's in the closet" joke, but that's turning it into something it wasn't. IIRC no one in the show made it out like Mojo in a dress was even a joke. The 90s show would have though.

It is still incredibly lazy and a cop out from writing actual humor. You don't use memes, if you make something that people find funny and implement it in other ways, it becomes a meme naturally.

They're not creating memes though, they're incorporating memes into the girls' every day culture. It's like how people will reference memes IRL? They're little girls with smartphones for goodness sake.

A great example is Gumball. Gumball does internet-era comedy in a way that still works on its own. Trendy vernacular is used sparingly and believably (though it can still be jarring hearing terms like "baller"). It also references specific internet phenomenons and viral videos instead of drinking from the meme fountain. See here:

There's an entire episode, The Uploads, that nails "YouTube culture" in its entirety. I recommend checking it out if you want to see "internet humor" done well, even though I don't think it's that great of an episode in its own right.
