Coming soon: Amiibo blind boxes!

Honestly Smash is probably the FG where loot boxes would work best without changing the game up too much.

- Lots of history to draw costumes and colors from
- Lots of collectibles like trophies
- They already implemented randomly getting custom moves through gameplay
- They had a TON of DLC for Mii Fighter costumes

I can easily imagine a version of Smash 4 made by Activision that's literally the exact same game except there are loot boxes and it's way harder to earn everything in-game.

So every character DOES have a damaging level 3 super now. Interesting. I think that's fair but intriguing, especially for characters that already had (and kept) non-raw damage level 3s, like Firebrand.

Level 3s aren't unscaled anymore so they're really useless now.

If they still get start up invincibility, they're not. Plus that little extra damage will help in certain situations, even if it is scaled.

But yeah, not as important as UMvC3.

These types of
giant
bosses in fighting games are the worst. Never fun to fight against.

It's a VS series staple at this point though. Gotta have some
big ass monster than barely moves around while you fuck it up
.

At least it's better than Abyss.

I'd probably prefer Abyss, because at least you can go around him and over him while you wait a few seconds before he does his next move.

Ultron-Sigma is alright though.

I just meant in terms of the final boss actually being an amalgam of Capcom and Marvel stuff, instead of just "Fuck it, we made up this bullshit character out of thin air. Fight it now."

So Venom/WS/BP and then Hunter/Sigma/??? Can't recall who the last Capcom one is.

Hoping they get a femme fatales pack in asap for a bit more balance but game is definitely coming together.

Meioh, probably.

Also, I can almost guarantee we're not getting an all female DLC pack or whatever. The ratio will keep getting worse and worse with each DLC season. Also also, the game having the newcomer characters that are probably in the game already as DLC is not what I would call the game coming together.

So we'll only get 1 new franchise on the capcom side with the Hunter. Sucks.

I can agree on this, it's appropriate to an MvC game for sure.

The game is full of ugly faces and the last boss is
ONE UGLY FUCKING FACE!?
Fuck this shit!

So you mean to say they got it right?

Only those who have played the X series will appreciate it and honestly if this was supposed to be what Ultron Sigma had to turn into in order to beat you, it would make sense that final transformation looks like a train wreck fusion.

Honestly, this works so much better than Ultron Sigma since for there, it just looked like just another playable character.

Greedily speaking for myself, sorry. More than one Spider-Man character and even another Cap character and BP is a plus for me. Roster has been discussed ad naseaum and it is definitely lacking from an overall standpoint for every fan, but hits all of my personal notes except for female characters.
Gimme X-23 and Wasp and Elektra and Kamala, fuckers

Female pack is almost definitely a pipe dream to be sure. I will be having enough fun to weather the rockier times for this roster but totally legitimate for some people not to.

They could work in MK, maaaybe SF but this particular iteration sold like shit.

But FGs need to figure out how to increase player retention and creating those reward feedback loops first. NRS is putting the most work into trying to do that by far.
One of the things with lootcrate-style systems is that they also do a lot to help with player retention. There's something to be said about getting people into the habit of playing the game every day for the free chances at drops, or by getting them to play "one more game" as they're one win away from another free loot crate. No fighting game outside of Injustice 2 on console even attempts to do this (interestingly, the arcade versions of Virtua Fighter and Tekken were way ahead of the curve when it came to this). And I think it could work with smaller fighting games, assuming that the core playerbase is dedicated (and rich) enough (as the more niche FGs tend to have much higher levels of engagement on a per-player basis). Smaller mobile releases can be fueled by even something like 100 whales.

It absolutely could work in, say, an alternate-universe version of SF5 (although they might have to put in more work creating content to pad out the loot crates, such as new taunts/win animations, profile fluff like icons and titles, and so on). They might need more staff to create more content (for both things players do and don't want), but it wouldn't surprise me if they ended up making more than enough money to offset that. Business wise, putting a cap on what your whales can spend in-game is stupid. I feel a little gross typing that sentence... but it is what it is.

...yeah that's the whole issue with it.
Exactly. If they offered golden loot boxes on a more regular basis (which guarantee at least one legendary skin), I'd be happy. Hell, if it gave you at least one guaranteed item that's a shit-ton of gold, that'd be happy. But even if you buy the loot boxes with cash, it's still randomized.
