Optimization, pal, it's just logical. Of course, if every developer had the luxury of having as much time to deliver a game, as much money in their pockets and as much talent as Rockstar, every game would be a wonder.
Plenty of games have been technically impressive with much less budget than the average Rockstar game.

It's almost like The Initiative don't even exist (/sarcasm).

A horrible take all around. And throughout the gen Sony will be no different; already they are letting some of their once-exclusives migrate to other platforms and it seems Jim Ryan has an initiative to push for that gradually more aggressively over the next few years.

People who think otherwise are lying to themselves; XBO initially was mocked for the 'TV TV TV' stuff (rightfully so), but PS4 ended up having a very big focus on multimedia its own self. Sony just played coy in marketing that as a chief selling point, but it's all there, just like with XBO. The only thing PS4 is missing is HDMI In.

Much like that, you're going to see Sony do the same when it comes to game streaming throughout the next few years. However unlike Microsoft, they just aren't selling it as a chief selling point in the PS ecosystem...yet. And that will have a knock-on effect with both fans and the media once they actually start aggressively pursuing GaaS, because it'll have been more like Sony weening people into it little by little (and then exponentially diving head-first into that arena), meaning they won't immediately notice it as much.

That's basically the trick: Microsoft is telling you upfront what they want to do in what they see as being the future business model for gaming; Sony wants to sell the public on a more traditional experience but sneak in their own implementation of that future business model piece by piece. Both companies are aiming to do the same thing, but are messaging it differently.

To your other points...those are just flat out wrong. A game's budget doesn't indicate its quality whatsoever. If that were the case, The Order:1886 and Mass Effect:Andromeda would've actually been good games. Instead, one was basically (literally) a movie with last-gen corridor shooting segments thrown in (I'd even compare it more to a rail shooter like the RE Wii games, House of the Dead or Time Crisis, but at least those games didn't pad the content out with an obscene number of cutscenes), and the other was...well...you've seen the memes.

OTOH some of the best games of this gen have been on the smaller scale of budget. Shadow of the Colossus Remake, Crash Team Racing Remake, Sunset Overdrive, Bayonetta 3...these are all games with pretty modest budgets for AA-AAA style affairs. Even games like Resident Evil 7 had a relatively modest budget, I can extent that to would-be games as well that only had demos, like PT. A higher budget doesn't guarantee a better-playing or even better-looking game, it just opens up the opportunity for those things.

But there's been way too many instances of games that use it for superfluous things like insanely stupid marketing campaigns and overpriced VA talent simply because they're a well-known name, when someone way cheaper and lesser-known could probably do the job at least as well if not better.

The Ninja and Shroud deals shouldn't even be factoring into your hot take, because for starters we don't even know how those deals are structured. Very likely they were not paid that money up front, and chances are also likely a partition of the amount is covered in stock options or something to that effect. Not to mention, they are likely being paid the amount split into smaller payments, with the option for MS to "buy out" the rest of the contract if they wish to no longer pursue the partnership.

These are big companies, they have the means to budget their amounts to different projects and initiatives without much any problems. And for simply the fact them getting Ninja and Shroud over to Mixer dropped a hot dump on Twitch's hot head, for that much I'm glad it was done. Twitch is easily one of the worst-programmed sites I've ever used in terms of how the foundation code actually seems to be structured, and rather than fixing the technical side they would rather add more trinkets on top. That isn't even minding the garbage trolling that occurs, or the preference for partnered streamers (to the point of not enforcing TOS on them when they blatantly violate TOS), etc. Maybe you should ask Ninja and Shroud about Twitch's incompetence before laying the blame on MS for giving them an option.

And I don't know what you are getting at by their games being "hot garbage"; it's one thing if those games don't appeal to you but titles like the Forza games, they score very well and have a pretty hefty audience of gearheads who like those games, either in addition or in preference over titles like Gran Turismo. Sunset Overdrive reviewed well, but had bad marketing. Titanfall did well enough both in reception and sales to garner a sequel. Gears 5 has seemingly done well in reception and market performance. Halo: Infinite seems like it's going to try taking that IP in some fresh new direction. Project:Mara is the best proof-case of next-gen raytracing I've seen from either MS or Sony thus far. Flight Simulator is literally the only game of its ilk on the market and for airplane aficionados, has crazy amounts of true-to-life physics accuracy and depth.

Slinging around this "they're hot garbage" nonsense smells like a fanboy tantrum where you simply can't be modest and say "those games aren't my taste". Which is what I do with a lot of Sony's cinematic games, honestly. I can appreciate the skill that goes into them, and the fanbases they have. But for myself personally, I think a good number of those games have flaws in their design that impacts their depth and playability compared to other similar games, and if I'm measuring their impact in terms of the narrative, they lose out to actual films with similar subject matter (since they want to emulate films in that way, why not compare their narrative to film ones?).

But that doesn't lead me to call them "hot garbage". The closest I did to that was with Death Stranding, but that one was more due to them barely showing any substantial gameplay for the longest time, and Kojima being a bit of a pretentious dick between doing constant photo-ops with Hollywood celebs and musicians (in place of talking about the game), and trying to get political in interviews promoting the game. People who've actually played the game says its good to great and has strong crafting mechanics, I'm willing to believe them. It's probably not a game for me but I'll respect it and give it its props.

You guys really need to learn how to do the same.

Both systems will have SSDs so I don't see how that will be a point a contention. All we know of both is that the two systems will have custom SSD access similar to AMD's SSG card line where the SSD can serve as a memory-mapped cache.

We know NOTHING else about them specifically, except for pieces of hints that could or could not be true. That includes their speed and bandwidth.

I mean why that newspaper?? You could make it easier
1. Sony is going to do the same as MS (which is not) but whatever makes you sleep at night.
2. High budget doesn't mean quality. (Unfortunately with Xbox high or low budget is irrelevant because either way they release only garbage.

And plz don't come & say they're working on this and that because I believe it when I see it, otherwise don't mention anything that is unknown.

I'm just literally saying what Microsoft is saying, and explaining what that means. I never said I agree with them... This is just their vision for gaming. Instead of saying that it's nonsense and marketing BS, maybe explain why. Now you're just calling something shit, but you don't give any explanation on why this is the case.
Ugh oh, here you go. I didn't say anything was "shit". Calm down buddy. I'm just not naive to "what" they really mean. I live in Chicago and have many marketing friends. This my friend is classic PR talk for nothing to do with people's best interest. I'm truly sorry if you are offended. I asked you to bare with me. Guess you are super invested and passionate about restating their initiative.

What are you guys honestly expecting when it's comes to gaming with an ssd? Unless it's an small indie game, I very much doubt you'll be instantly loading into new sections of a game. You'll still need to load into areas, it'll just be quicker than before. Any big game will always need to load.

Like, I'll happily play the ignorant card here and let you guys explain in what way it'll make a difference apart from say draw distance and loading times. But I honestly can't think of a situation where we'll be saying "man, this game would of been shit if we didn't have an ssd"

Not really, I'm not even sure which console I'm buying. But thanks for explaining why it's all marketing nonsense...

That's one example for my point, a PS5 exclusive could totally benefit from SSD, but a game for SX is constrained by the One S/X mechanical drive.

Until 2021.

The year where MS's mandate for 1st-party cross-gen ends.

B/c the comment everyone is quoting was mentioned at E3 2019.

And no one outside of MS still knows in what way that cross-gen support will even be emphasized.

Not to mention that next-gen games will be ported downward, scaling back on what need be scaled back for an older-gen platform, not designed with the base system in the ecosystem as the lead, which would be completely idiotic.

....I don't see how this isn't the common take on that comment. Also I'd love to dig up some 2004/2005 comments regarding 360 to see if people were giving MS hell anyway for going cold-turkey on the OG xbox to catapult into next-gen (kind of like what Sony seems they may end up doing going into PS5). Would be interesting to see how the narrative of it being seen favorable for one platform holder and used as an attack vessel on the other platform holder never really changes xD.

That's the thing? I'm shocked you can't see it and feel bad for those that don't. Guess I'm good at psychology. You are right I need to respect where you are at with what you see. Respectfully and seriously. Just obvious to me for many reasons that would take to long to type. I thought maybe you could help me understand but it's the same as why anyone listens or follows any belief system. Got it. I didn't understand why you would restate anything they 'meant' unless you believed it yourself. All is good and moving on!

In defense of Ms, whose output has been quite poor this gen, Forza Horizon, Gears5 and Ori among others are far from being garbage.

Sony first party studios are absolutely brilliant, but calling those games garbage is nothing but foolish.

Newspaper? That's nothing compared to a college essay. But you didn't get a lick of my point in trying to boil it down to something newsbyte-friendly either.

You had a shitty hot-take that screamed fanboy garbage, and rightfully got slammed for it. A sensible discussion on next-gen consoles doesn't need any of that console warring vomit so leave it at the door bruv.

I played gears 5 I completed 60% of the game & I lost my progress because of some stupid bug in the game & never touched it again. Forza? Again I'm not into racing games but again Forza, gears & Halo? What else? Where are the new IPs plz no one is foolish here but people who defend MS. No disrespect to anyone but that's my opinion.

Seems you also missed the point; I said both sides have engaged in it but more often than not, Sony fanboys are the ones who initiate these senselessly idiotic console warrior "debates" (more like diatribes).

You just brought up an example where Xbox fanboys did something, but in the totality of things it's pretty well outweighed by the times Sony fanboys have done similar. More Sony fans = more Sony fanboys = more console war shit-stirring started by Sony fanboys. Law of averages.
Still just your opinion, right? Just checking.
So we agree that the “arguments” from some of the more rabid fanboys are bullshit. Thanks.
From both sides. Yes. Be mad from both sides, just not one.

The word fanboy is the worst. Everyone is a fan of something. It's as bad as the word faggot. It's just a derogatory word for the state of liking something someone else doesn't. We have to be better in here. How about the word cheerleader or back up dancer. Atleast more funny and true to someone trying to speak from a computer for a multibillionaire corporation they truly know nothing about. God I cant wait for XSX and PS5 to get here and get the future of gaming started.

AFAIK the main allure for developers when it comes to SSDs is data streaming, which allows for more unique and detailed assets to be streamed at high speeds. Less pop-ins, faster games, and higher visual fidelity, that's what I'm expecting.

Loading times are a nice cherry on top

I personally don't link the term fanboy with someone who likes one brand over another, tons of markets are like that, Sony/Microsoft, Pepsi/Coke, Ford/Chevy, etc. I link the term fanboy to some who defends a product even if it is incorrect and spreads FUD against competitive brands just to make them feel all warm and fuzzy inside. They are the type of people who have the inability to admit they are ever wrong even though the truth is blatantly obvious.

Yes, for me the best examples are Spiderman limited traversal speed and flight axed in Horizon Zero Dawn, game design being directly affected by data streaming.

Are LOD and pop in in general be severe reduce by SSD? Call of Duty WW2 for PS4 same some issues with that, if someone here playing will know.

We really should just split the thread up. There are fans on both sides that don't care what the other does.
Exactly it's just crazy. I'm all for people being supporters of their favorite console, but be able to back it up instead of going after another man. People are acting like they are talking about each others mothers in here. It's gaming - remember fun! The funny thing is it's all psychological and animalistic. When people are in fear or if it's all they have going on in their lives, they become overly defensive and passionate. These companies want our money. I want games - if they spend millions on art and direction, I can cough up 60 dollars for and experience.

Seems like you can't hold a mature discussion in a next-gen console thread for more than a few words is more like it. Guess you can join the Sony fanboy clowns and sling your feces with the Microsoft fanboy clowns over the broken fence. I just know you're one less person to have a logical, neutral or mature discussion with in this thread, no big loss.

I actually took a leak recently. It was quite refreshing.

You mean like a good cross-section of posters on that site?

Whether Capcom could afford to make and market a SFV is less relevant. It's more to do with whether they WOULD be willing to do so in light of the commercial risk involved.

We're living in an unfortunate post-fighting game world, where games outside of the pro-gaming sphere aren't that successful in terms of sales. And contrary to popular belief, SF despite being an iconic and historic brand, doesn't have the same appeal among the newer generation of gamers raised on Naruto and DBZ than those of us who played SF at the arcades in the good ol days.

SFV happened because Sony was willing to share a huge portion of the financial burden of not only making the game but marketing it, which significantly reduces the commercial risk for the publisher Capcom; meaning that from a financial perspective, the project needs to sell only a fraction of the projected copies to cover the publisher's costs.

On Sony's side, gaining such an iconic brand as an exclusive is more than worth the risk, as being a platform holder the economics of financing development projects aren't as rudimentary as a simple financial ROI calculation. There's both a platform library and overall brand investment that in most cases is more important to a platform holder than whether a single title makes money (especially given the sheer volume of platform revenues generated by PSN that would more than adequately amortise any development costs for single titles that fail on the market).

Expect to see more deals like this signed by both MS and Sony.

And in many cases they're good for gamers, as I would personally love to see dead franchises, considered by their publishers to be too risky, come back as exclusives than simply not come back at all.

E.g. A new Lost Planet that follows on from LP2 as a PS exclusive would be much better than no LP at all.

There are points of validity to your argument with SFV being moneyhatted, that would also apply to Rise of the Tomb Raider, but both cases are still moneyhats where they didn't need to be.

Street Fighter was one of Capcom's most prolific IPs in the 7th gen; the issue with SFV was never if was going to be made. The issue was that it may've came a bit later than it did. And, going by the state the game came out in, that actually may've been for the better long-term.

It's pretty obvious SFV was not ready for launch in 2016, but Capcom wanted to have it out there for the Capcom Pro Tour, as a potential revenue via the Sony partnership and 3rd-party sponsors. It had very little to do with them being in risk of never making another SF, because that would've been inevitable. The only difference is that we would've gotten SFV in 2017 or 2018 instead of 2016, and going by Arcade Edition's reception, a 2018 release would've been best.

We see now, even without Sony's sponsorship, Capcom can still manage strong funding with SFV. Them getting the game in the freaking Olympics has been sans-Sony, after all. And they are now in a better financial position than they've been in a whole decade, so there is almost no incentive to have a game like SF6 moneyhatted this time around.

Ironically, the same may not be able to be said for a new Tomb Raider; Shadow of the Tomb Raider just outright bombed, so the IP might be in a similar position as to when before the 2013 reboot released. But it's unlikely even MS would moneyhat it, since they seem to be focusing more on internal 1st-party content at last. And Sony definitely doesn't need it, they have Uncharted (which I'd say is much more popular out of the two nowadays).

Couldn't see Nintendo bothering, either.

Those should both be severely improved with a SSD, I know while playing Modern Warfare I have noticed LOD issues when running around, I have run up to buildings quickly and the texture on the wall is still playing catch up.

not really. the graphics card is in charge of that.

VRS will help with that though.

if anything SSD will allow for faster travel through the world which means the graphics card will need to render worlds even faster and if its not good enough, it will struggle even more than it does this gen.

MW use an entire new engine, while WW2 still use a mix of a custom quake area engine if I'm not wrong. Not only severe pop in issues, the singleplayer story mode have some issues while acess the storage drive in some missions. Digital Foundry pointed that out calling 'streaming' issues.

Unfortunately my opinion on that matter is based on long-term observation. So it's an opinion based on what I would concur as being factual. Again, law of averages; one side has more fans, more potential for tomfoolery, which can be observed throughout the thread.

Doesn't mean both sides don't engage in dumb warring arguments, but one seems to have more of them (or instances of statements precluding to them) who gin up that dumb warring. It is what it is. If the other side were the more popular, you'd see more instances of them ginning it up.

Nothing wrong with being truthful about it. Should be fair to acknowledge it while asking console warriors on both Sony and MS sides to stop with the idiocy.

For loading texture as well?
that i dont know. that should be the ssd with some cpu. but cant do much with textures in ram if your gpu is too shit to render it. thats why i dont want a 9.2 tflops gpu. with all the destruction, higher npc counts, next gen photorealistic textures that are going to be in next gen games, a 9.2 tflops gpu simply wont be enough to render them at high resolutions. gpus will be doing a LOT more heavy lifting next gen compared to this gen.

all i know is that sony used the last gen ps4 game to show off fast traversal their new ssd allows. there is no way a 12 tflops gpu can render next gen assets that fast.

Absolutely not, it wouldn’t be that fast.

But I would be totally down for last gen remasters at 4k/60 like fallout and skyrim they essentially removed loading on doors, would be awesome.

You presented your opinion with zero respect so I gave you none. If you're going to conduct yourself a certain way when it comes to a topic like what games you prefer, don't be surprised when people treat and respond to you a certain way in response. I've had many discussions in this thread with people I disagree with but have been very respectful towards, because they carried and expressed their opinions with some sense of respect and maturity.

And yes, it also means I can disagree with people on one thing but agree with them on something else, as long as they aren't being an abrasive fanboy about it. I've even done that with you in at least a couple previous comments, because those comments didn't come off like a console warrior hot-take.

So don't get mad at me when I respond to a post of yours with something befitting the energy you put out when typing the post in the first place. That you're so insistent on thinking I've "disrespected" you, maybe take a moment and ask how you could've messaged your opinion in a way that doesn't come off as a Gamespot-level forum post in a versus thread.

Also I'd like to point out I'm just criticizing a certain way you've done a thing, not you as an individual. So I'll walk back and apologize for the insults calling you a fanboy, console warrior and clown. That was probably a bit much. However, the comment you posted that started this whole chain of responses between us here? No, that was a pretty bad way of stating an opinion, and read like something a fanboy would've posted. Personally I don't think such extremes are needed to simply convey you like some type of games over others. Can we at least agree on that?

Please no. Patches work fine. They don’t have to repackage the game to sell it for 40$.
