When you list them like that it's pretty bad, given 2 of them are their strongest developers.

Possibilities:
  • Pro Console announcement.
  • Price Cut.
  • Discontinue PS VR2 (very unlikely to be actually said aloud).
  • Formal announcement of re-org with new SIE first party lead now that Herman is in charge.
  • Portable PS4.
  • Consolidation of Bungie.
  • Distinguish day one PC games like Helldivers 2 vs console exclusives.
  • (Absolute long shot) Disney or Apple style event covering games + Pro console with 2 to 3 year roadmap of titles.
  • Partnership with "Microsoft Gaming." (Recognize that they are a new 3rd party partner, better split, CoD "not going anywhere)."

Sony's communication this gen has been abysmal

No one knows when the games are coming, nothing is announced or updated

They decided to stop being communicative when the gaming press decided to show their true colours around the time of the reveal/launch of the consoles this generation.

So now they get nothing and as a result it means we get less in the way of nuggets of information.

They actually made a vertical slice for spidey 2 and insomniac is the most prolific sony team so they clearly don't avoid vertical slices alltogether...
Spider-Man 2 was months away from release by the time they showed that 10 minutes gameplay at the last PlayStation Showcase. Clearly different from when Days Gone was shown at E3 2016 with an extensive gameplay walkthrough nearly three years ahead of launch. That was my point.
Yep, asking to show something to get people hyped after years of silent is absurd and should not be taken seriously, i understand :lollipop_grinning_sweat:
Absolutely not. In fact, I do agree with you in that it is time that we see the next games from Santa Monica Studio, Sucker Punch, Naughty Dog, Guerrilla or Bend sometime this year.

What I do believe its absurd is to demand them to put together 5-10 minutes vertical slices of gameplay for promotional purposes only, instead of simply letting us know the premise and look of their games in 2-3 minutes in-engine or in-game trailers and channel all those efforts that an ultra-polished vertical slice would require towards the actual development of the games.

Oh didnt know that informatie. But seems silly to annouce a PS meeting this late, no time to hype people up about it.
It does seem like it'll be a State of Play at this point, going by the short time there'll be between the announcement and the actual event, in case that it really ends up airing later this week.

The PS Meeting/Showcase might actually be saved for later in the summer, near the announcement and release date of the PS5 Pro.

If there was no showcase/SOP, Sony would announce they are skipping, like they did in 2022. It would be terrible PR to not that

Did they announce that in 2022? I seem to recall questions about whether or not there was going to be a showcase stretching into the fall and it just never came.

Edit: yeah, this was being discussed into November 2022:

Yeah, I was specifically referring to the May showcase, which Playstation anounced there would be no showcase in 2022. Every year, outside of 2022, whether it's E3 or standalone events, Playstation hasn't missed a SOP/Showcase in May. It would be weird if they were radio silent without announcing anything. It would be terrible PR

What I'm saying is I don't think Sony announced there would be no showcase in 2022 at any point.

They did have a major State of Play (PSVR2, FFXVI, RE4R, SF6, Callisto...) in early June 2022, though.

Well, thats the point, we dont know when/if there is an actual event so it may not be a short time at all

Just a few hours left for Grubb to be proved either right or wrong "pie_tears_joy: 🤭

At least tomorrow we'll have a SoB (state of business) from Sony 👀

He'll just say he was correct but Sony decided last minute to delay due to .... reasons.
He may very well end up being right BUT no one in my circle is talking about it.

That said I have been super busy as of late and not just chatting with people but usually when a show is coming I get a text or two before the announcement though not always

Or simply improve them a lot going forward. But yes, insane that the January 2024 State of Play was even better than the 2021 Showcase, IMO.

I don't see a need for it. We just end up speculating if we'll even have one. They get pressured to do one and they end up being shit anyway because they don't have the content to actually justfiy it, but it's worse because of the branding attached to it.

With State of Plays we know we get one every quarter so there's no speculation. And they're also really good at actually setting expectations for those shows. If it's a bigger than normal State of Play they tell us anyway.

They probably dont have any games ready.

Better not to announce a showcase than making players stare at a blank screen for a few minutes.

Did anyone else talk about the supposed Sony show besides Grubb?

"they're also really good at actually setting expectations for those shows"

By making them all mediocre, no one expects much from them anymore

Most of the talk - outside of Grubb - coming from reliable places over the last couple of weeks has been centered around actual, imminent game announcements (Astro Bot, Concord, Gravity Rush 2, Horizon franchise...), which would suggest an incoming event given the volume of news, rather than on precise details on a Showcase or State of Play.

Nah. They do make a good job in setting up expectations, like, "This State of Play will be centered on third-party and indie games coming out later this year. Don't expect news from PlayStation Studios", and stuff like that.

And to be fair, starting with the June 2022 episode - and excluding the February 2023 one focused around Suicide Squad gameplay - all State of Plays have gotten much better, with the last one, January 2024, actually being fantastic and way better than the last Showcase.

So what is happening?

There's no way Sony doesn't have anything coming up, right?
What is happened is that as usual Jeff, the Xboxera guy etc made up this fake and Sony never planned to make a showcase this month. They made up supposed upcoming Sony stuff to overhype the sony fans and later to dissapoint them when they see that it never happers.

Sony normally does their conference/showcase/big State of Play it in early/mid June, so very likely will be there. Sony has many games to show for the first time, some of them to be announced and also some of them that release later this year have to receive a release date.

Thank you.
There's going to be a show. You don't need to be an insider to know that. Whether Grubb gets clowned on or not is if it misses may and ends up being in June instead and also if astrobot isn't there.
I never said there wouldn't be a show. Sony always has something for May or June so that was to be expected. I meant if anyone else mentioned a show for may.

True. At this point i expect a June show.

Probably delayed showcase for the Master Chief Collection announcement, like Nintendo Direct delayed for HiFi Rush port.

There's definitely an event coming soon, all with the billbil-kun leaks. With that said, it's either on...

...or straight up tomorrow.
Well Astro Bot would be ideal for Summer Game Fest (same with Concord), other first party games could wait until Pro announcement
