Update: Nintendo confirms no DL required for physical Switch 2 Edition Games (the OG Switch game and the upgrade pack are on the same cart)

Predicts the worst decade for Sony starting 2022
New information has come to light, and the OP has been updated to reflect that.

The cover of a Nintendo Switch 2 Edition game reads, "Includes the Nintendo Switch game and the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition upgrade pack. Upgrade pack also available separately."

There was some confusion if this would mean that the Switch 2 Edition content would have to be downloaded, essentially meaning Switch 2 Edition games wouldn't be playable without first connecting online, and that now appears to be the case.

According to a customer service representative for Nintendo, the physical versions of these Switch 2 Edition games won't contain the full Switch 2 Edition game on the cart.

When asked by a customer if these Switch 2 Editions included the full game, including Switch 2 Edition upgrade on the cart itself, a customer service representative said "we can confirm that the upgrades will be download codes.

It's worth nothing, however, that customer service representatives are often hired by agencies that don't have intimate, accurate knowledge of a niche issue like this.

The main concern for fans is that this means preservation for games with Switch 2 Editions becomes challenging, as no complete physical version will exist.

Switch 2 Edition games are separate from standard Switch 2 backwards compatibility, and need to either be purchased separately or upgraded to for owners of Switch 1 versions.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Kirby and the Forgotton Lands, Pokemon Legends Z-A, Metroid Prime 4: Beyond and Mario Party Jamboree will all receive Switch 2 Editions.

Looks like most games won't be a cartridge but a download code including Metroid Prime 4. It just keeps keeping worse and keeps giving me a reason to wait for emulation.

LOL at charging $70 for 8 year old games and $80 for switch 1 games.

Mod Edit: Fixed the OP.

Everyone should chill for a minute and wait and see. You can always start loosing your shit when +100 games getting released and it's only a download code.

Also, not clicking that shit with people pulling those faces.

Genius move. They dealt a severe blow to the physical game market. If you resell the physical game, whoever has it will still need to pay Nintendo to get the Switch 2 version.

You cannot help but admire how diabolical Nintendo is.

I thought the Game Key Card and actual physical cartridges of the games are different? As in the cartridges have the full game on them.

Didn't even CD Projekt Red say Cyberpunk 2077 is fully on cartridge?

I would punch any youtuber that does a face for their thumbnail I fucking hate it

I would doubt that... There are several stores that distribute the games in physical format, Amazon, Playasia, Estarland.

I'm not watching that video, but the most recent thing I heard is that you get the full game on a cartridge, and the Switch 2 specific upgrade is a download.

Which I'd still consider to be pretty shit, but I don't think you just get a single code in the box.

I hadn't considered that. I thought it was just them actually giving you something of value instead of a physical key that still needs to be put in to play, but you are right, it is super shit.

Some games are, some don't. If the box art has a lot of small letter text on the bottom then it likely is just a digital key.

What OP means is that the Switch 2 release of Metroid Prime 4 doesn't exactly include a Switch 2 cart, but rather a Switch 1 cart with a Switch 2 upgrade code.
Shilling my own thread for it (go to post #29 for official confirmation):
Thread 'Nintendo Switch 2 Edition games seemingly not including NS2 upgrades in the cartridge data (need to be downloaded)' https://www.neogaf.com/threads/nint...cartridge-data-need-to-be-downloaded.1682502/

Its not Switch 2 games, its Switch 1 games. I thought it was obvious that this was gonna be Switch 1 games with digital upgrades. Metroid Prime 4 is just a Switch 1 game with a very impressive upgrade.

Forgot about these versions, buy BOTW and an expansion sub and it will be far cheaper than buying the Switch 2 edition.

I was speculating about this in the Game Key Card thread, whether it's a download code or if the key card itself acts as the licence for downloading the upgrade. The distinction matters because it impacts the resale value of the physical copy. Right now, it seems like the codes are limited to the enhanced edition of games. Scummy move regardless of how you spin it. I'd recommend just buying the Switch 1 physical version of the game and downloading the upgrade pack separately, it would probably work out cheaper.

You would at least get the better box art.

Might as well call it the Switch Pro. Also, I'm assuming that if you purchase a used Switch 2 cart you will have to also purchase the upgrade pack. Gives Nintendo a chunk of every used game sale. Correct me if i'm wrong.

Do we know if these are actual texture upgrades or just tweaking up the game settings?

Also, Capcom gives away texture upgrades for free. No reason why Nintendo can't do it. Money grubbers.

What you mean "giving you a reason to wait for emulation"? Weren't you already "priced out of the market"?

Buying the $80 games is unacceptable

Buying $80 games to rip them off and emulate, because he's entirely legit right? Right? Is totally fine

But you know, he's just broadcasting on the internet that he wants to pirate switch 2 games but with the escape that he's really gonna buy the switch 2 games

doesn't that mean my Switch 1 library will just hold all its value because Switch 2 people will be buying the exact same cart?

they're literally just giving you the same cart I already have?

Man, you'd think charging $70 for some 8 years old game they could at least be bothered to put the fully patched and upgraded version on the cartridge

Wow i dont think anyone has ever done that before.......

Still crappy though. I don't think anyone wants any company to move towards the same practices as Activision…

And Nintendo has been so good with this prior. They even sold a version of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe with all the DLC on-cart, something you'd also think would just be a code.

Xbox more or less did the same thing when they repackaged 360 games for the xbox one boost

Its cheap as fuck but not uncommon

Now that's just absolute ass. Not only does it mean no preservation of these Switch 2 versions, it also means you can't sell your Switch 2 version to someone else, because all you actually own is the Switch 1 version (the upgrade code will already be used up and tied to your account).

A HUGE difference here is that your example is sold as a PS4 game with a PS5 upgrade code included. These Switch 2 editions are sold as Switch 2 games even though they are in fact not.
