Nintendo Mentions "Nintendo Switch 2 Edition" Games, Can Only Be Played on Switch 2

The Nintendo Direct was absolutely horrible up to the point of shocking, creating the impression of a company wishing for its down death on a suicide endeavor.

Metroid Prime 4 was the best of all presented games and its niveau on sound and graphics was what felt like significantly less than Metroid Prime 1.

What do you do when you think your game is about to suck? That's right, include some vagina and people will see value in it. 🤦‍♂️

Only Nintendo is getting away with this. Out of date hardware eight years ago at release already, consumer unfriendly policies of tying games to consoles instead of accounts and now this.

By now it feels like a test for idiocy!

Super Smash Bros Ultimate Deluxe
Zelda BotW Deluxe
And Zelda TotK Deluxe on the way. Unfortunately.

This gimmick allows them to update games without renaming the title, instead adding a "Nintendo Switch 2 Edition" badge to the icon...

So no need for the awkwardness of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate For Real This Time

Switch 2 games will only be playable on Switch 2 (shocker!) just like PS5 games only playable on PS5!

This feels like a no durr kind of announcement.

They essentially just put a label on whats already a common thing (cross-gen, like CoD having a copy that works on ps4 and 5 or the next version thats just on 5)

The dream was that games like that (and the 60fps mode in Thousand Year Door that's in the code but also not available) would just magically have better framerates when played on the better hardware.

But if they're doing "Switch 2 Editions" of Switch 1 games and selling them for full price, there's no way in hell they're going to provide "free" boosts for existing games.
With this new sharing system and this Switch 2 Edition shenanigans you have to wonder if they will attempt to bleed money out of their customer base by making you buy at full price, or are they going to let you transfer the game over and pay a small update fee. Or have free updates for some games? If they go the bleed the consumer/anti consumer route I may set up a Switch 2 just for my son and may not get one for myself, and if I do get one eventually just buy the occasional exclusive physical game for the Switch 2. Hopefully Switch 2 doesn't shit the bed during this transition between Switch 1 and 2.

So if its a backwards combat system and we end up having to pay full price for a switch 2 version of the same game thats kinda tight . if we own the switch one games for a small fee we get the digital cartridge.

Surely the switch 1 games should be able to use the upgraded spec to play better and visually look better if you think how emulators run games.not on nintendo hardware.

At the end of the day it's nintendo though and they don't like dropping prices so i guess we're all going broke with these upgraded titles.:messenger_tears_of_joy: Beans on toast it is for the foreseeable.

Nintendo? Passing up on a guaranteed 10 million $70 sales?

This is something like New Play Control! Wii games like Pikmin. Instead of renaming them all they just add a label. There's still no telling whether it will be full game only or $10 upgrades.

I could be wrong here but I think people are misinterpreting.
For me it just means that for cross-gen stuff, of course the Switch 2 version can only be played on Switch 2

Possible example: Metroid Prime 4
I mean duh

Upgrade path for no more than 10 bucks or gtfo (and that's only if its a significant upgrade). No chance in hell I would pay full price for previous gen games.

You don't pay anything except what they cost on previous generation. Your Switch 2 plays Switch 1 games.

Is this people's first time experiencing a new console generation?

Just people getting excited that Nintendo is basically confirming crossgen games, i.e. Switch 1 and (enhanced) Switch 2 editions of the same game

Idc how they do it but give me Zelda totk 60fps and Xeno games 60fps.

Sold.
There really needs to be some kind of upscaler and FPS unlock for backwards compatible games. They would shift units quicker by advertising you can play all your old games in 4K.

They REALLY need to push DLSS. Call it something with a quirky Nintendo like name and push the idea that it's "new" tech that seamlessly makes all of your older games look and run much Much better....basically their version of Xbox's "Boost Mode" or "Smart Delivery"....if they were smart enough to actually include this feature for Switch 2

Not like Sony selling a $200 off-screen play system that doesn't play apps, or a $500 VR accessory with no real games. Thank you Sony.
Not quite the same. That's hardware. A better comparison would be Sony charging $10 for PS5 version of some games if you already own the PS4 version. Thank you Sony.

In all seriousness though, Nintendo doesn't really do discounts. Mario Odyssey is still full price on their store.

I was speaking to your notion that Nintendo is the greediest, when Sony is the worst offender by far in that regard. In the end they're all greedy tho.

Following Sony not letting you play PS5 games on PS4 :messenger_grinning:

Oh, so they're gonna release all their WiiU games again. Got it.
Sure they will. I think people don't trust digital purchases from Nintendo and Sony because of stuff like this. How many PS systems has The Last of Us? At least MS has good bc on their Series systems, but I don't know how long that generosity will last.

1. All Switch 1 games will be playable on Switch 2
2. There will be exclusive Switch 2 games only playable on the Switch 2
3. There likely will be remastered Switch 1 games that will be enhanced to use the Switch 2 capabilities better. Maybe a $10 upgrade and/or a new Switch 2 edition
I sure hope so, especially Bayonetta 3 needs a Switch 2 upgrade. I don't care if it's the same (graphically), as long if it's 60 fps and above 1440p or higher....

It sounds like remasters of hit Switch titles which I think will ironically be praised as a good thing despite remasters being thrown under the bus in other areas.

Using the term "greedy" when discussing a for-profit business just shows a complete ignorance of the world and economics and an irrational sense of entitlement.

It's not Price, Demand, and Philanthropy that determines how much something costs. Of course, every business is "greedy". If they aren't, they need to get rid of whoever is in charge before they go out of business.

I've barely touched Bayonetta 3, in part because it looks and feels rougher than the first two. I would happily wait and pay $10 to play a superior version on the Switch 2. But, of course, I wouldn't buy the whole game again.

you aren't going to get a bunch of remasters.

I don't even think Nintendo will do many Switch 2 edition Switch games.

IT's probably more for 3rd parties than anything. Unless Nintendo decides to follow the herd. They usually don't.

Too many are projecting what happened on the Switch with all the Wii U ports to Switch 2. Different story. No one played the games on Wii U. EVeryone has played the games on SWitch who wanted to play them. Plus the Switch games play fine on Switch 2.

And people are projecting what the other platforms have been doing. I looked at a top ten PS5 game list the other week and 8 out of 10 of the games were also on PS4. I don't think that's Nintendo. They like money. But they don't kill the golden goose to get it.
