In an interview with Gamefile, Rod Fergusson, General Manager of the Diablo franchise, gave fans an exciting glimpse into the future of the series. While Blizzard recently unveiled a short-term roadmap for Diablo 4, Fergusson revealed that the team has been thinking far beyond that—with a detailed plan stretching over the next decade.

"We're here for the long haul. We've been doing long-range planning recently. And I've created a roadmap—a 10-year roadmap…it was actually a 12-year [roadmap]—I can see this, this, this and this and all these different things that we can do, [which] is really inspiring. And it's really exciting. We're focused on what players want…I can't tell you much more than that."

Rod casually dropped at DICE that the next expansion would not be in 2025 as previously expected. This long-term vision was shared during DICE, where Fergusson participated in a creative exchange initiated by journalist Stephen Totilo. Totilo's idea involved having one games industry figure pose a question for the next, which led Marc Merril of Riot Games to ask Fergusson: "How are you thinking about the next big inflection point and installment for Diablo? Because that's a storied franchise that has legs."

Fergusson's response should reassure fans about Blizzard's commitment to the franchise. With a 10-year roadmap, it's clear that Diablo's future is being carefully plotted out, though of course many things are subject to change.

At the same event, Fergusson also disclosed that the next major expansion for Diablo 4 is slated for 2026, breaking from the expected yearly release cycle.

"You've cheapened the entire experience" Diablo creator bemoans the current state of ARPGs and MMOs Fans were recently presented with a Diablo 4 2025 roadmap that outlined seasonal content, two new IP collaborations, and a possible teaser for a new class arriving in 2026. While some appreciated the broader look at Blizzard's plans, others criticized the roadmap's vague details and what looks like a repetition of seasonal mechanics like borrowed powers and reputation boards.

Alluding to a 10-year long game doesn't suprise me at all, and I'm glad Blizzard will be taking a little longer to let the next expansion cook. The decision to take a slower approach with expansions may ultimately benefit the franchise.

Lest we forget, this will be the first Diablo game that actually receives a second expansion as further plans for Diablo 3 were canceled before Reaper of Souls even hit the shelves.

Many fans, including myself, were left underwhelmed by the direction of the story in the Vessel of Hatred expansion, despite its introduction of the Spiritborn class and new content. The narrative's focus on Mephisto, who is a fascinating and complex villain, has still left many wanting for closure that never came. Also we will be heading into a third year of Diablo 4 without an appearance by the titular Prime Evil himself.

While Blizzard seems to be deliberately extending Mephisto's arc across multiple expansions, this could pave the way for a more cohesive and impactful story in the long term. Hopefully, future expansions will bring more satisfying resolutions as well as interesting new directions for the lore in Sanctuary.

Blizzard's ambitions of a decade of Diablo content give me hope, and it's clear the team is prioritizing both player feedback and long-term planning. While some may grow impatient with the slower rollout of expansions and updates, this deliberate approach could result in a better game overall, and I for one hope we look back fondly of these years arguing over what color the Helltides are each season.

Vessel of Hatred's campaign was... well it was a campaign, I guess. My squad fell off this game pretty hard before that expansion. We stuck around even less the second time. I really want them to make us stay and play the hell out of it. Because the game definitely has its moments. But we keep hitting walls of indifference or straight boredom.

Same for my crew. The campaign was pretty bad, I thought. The setting was cool, and the new class was mostly just fine, but the story was just "Diablo IV: Spinning Wheels". We've all stepped back, and probably won't revisit until the next expansion.

They need to get weird with it. Doing the same thing for the next 10 years is going go get old fast. It already is.

Man, this IP is screwed as long as Ron continues to make overarching decisions on it.

This guy lost my friends and I back when he and his ego tried to play identity politics with the genre and attempt to call Diablo IV a systems RPG. All because Lost Epoch came along and did things the fans of the genre wanted and did it well enough. Like Diablo IV cannot be in a pantheon shared by any other IPs. It must be its OWN.

This guy could not fathom that his team and hugely over developed IP was now playing catch up to a new release by a bunch of newcomers that did everything via remote work with an initial crew of 11.

I do not know about all of you, but this article's quotations have not moved me off that side of the pendulum. A 10 year plan smells of Ron looking at how long POE 1 kept people playing and thinking he should just mimic that shit. This guy is not a movement maker, he is a corporate mimic copying everything else that other people are doing right and attempting to call it his own original idea.

This man just makes me gag.

They really have their work cut out for them. They'd have to do something pretty drastic to tear people away from Path Of Exile 2.

I've not played PoE2 yet, but I've seen gameplay of the witch class. It makes D4's necromancer look like a prototype before they fleshed it out.

I know many hardcore people think sets are a bad idea, but they need to bring them back. I always come back to D3 every season because the upgrade path is simple and the leader boards separated by sets is fun for me. This is a game for casuals. Quit complicating the items process. All tempering is doing is making it really annoying to change items because you have to do all the tempering again. Keep it simple. Who gives a fuck about the hardcore streamers. Either way, I am in for the Paladin expansion. Can't wait!

Ron, make me into Dante sent to wipe the evil off the surface of Sanctuary with my holy cross. Let me baptize my enemies with holy fire.

All they have to do is add new classes, biomes, enemies and loot.

We dont need more story every expansion. That brings people back for 5h.

I mean the game is in much better state than it launched, but…

The story expansion is mediocre.
The story raid is awful.
The new class is alright.
The new zone is boring like the rest.

How do you fuck this up this much?

That's the problem with games these days. Costs too much to make a game so they release one and then just update and monetise it over the next decade instead of making a proper sequel.

D4 hasn't even been out two full years and my interest in it cratered long ago. D3, despite its foibles, kept me coming back for years. I played it regularly for a couple years and then kept coming back every so often for the expansion and many seasons.

D4's seasons have been more misses than hits. The expansion was merely okay but I was already burned out by the way they're just stringing the story along with endless cliffhangers. "Come back in two more years for another middling exposition dump…" Thanks but no thanks.

I had my fun with it when it launched but nothing about the game makes me want to keep coming back for another 8+ years.

Being stuck with the same game for 10 years sounds awful

its a fun to play good looking game, with no creativity in anything you do, nothing to earn or show off, an unused open world, brainless one shot bosses, with the art team (board members) more concerned with paid skins than new mobs or tiles. and i keep showin up at the trough every season oink oink.. comfy trash for me i guess
