RTTP Dune (Dir. David Lynch)

Did they film the Incal? That would be awesome.

I love Moebius, but I don't think he's right for Dune designs.

By the way, the Incal is available as a hard bound graphic novel. Do yourself a favor and buy it. It's an orgy of Moebius art. Jodorowsky's spiritual and occult interest creep in a little too much for my taste, but it's a Magnum Opus of the genre.

a movie is different from the book??? this is the first time that's ever happened. how confusing!

the movie is better than the book.
I know it's different and I expected it to be different but so much essential story was missing and the timeline of the movie was bit confusing since Paul didn't age a bit and Alia grew at rapid rate. And the spoon feeding is just bad directional choice (probably forced by production side). For me the book is far superior and more epic then the movie but i don't hold your opinion against you.

My GF did fell for ripped young Sting tho. That might explain some of my grudge against the film.

How his career recovered is that he wrangled a two movie deal with the producer when he agreed to Dune and the second film was Blue Velvet.

But I like the film. The general darkness and oppressive atmosphere work pretty well I think and any over theatrical stuff in it doesn't bother me that much. I like it more than Star Wars actually because it's got more bite to it.

Dune reminds me a bit of the other Dino De Laurentiis film Waterloo with it's awkward interior monologues and over ambition. But that film had some scenes with terrible acting and film making that made Dune look flawless.

He didn't say they are exactly the same, simply that the project was born out of the failed attempt at bringing the Dune adaptation to term.

I think it would be more precise to say that the failed adaptation had both of them develop a creative relationship from which the Incal was born.

If you enjoyed the Incal, check out the Saga of the Meta Barons. It's got an amazing 80's sci-fi feel and Giménez art is superlative although a bit indulgent towards the end of it.

It is a mess but I did appreciate the longer cut more. It did flesh some things out and give more background to the long standing struggles between houses. I thought the production design was great, especially the Emperor's totally golden throne room.

Plus Brad Dourif

Every planet's interiors are different. Industrial for the Harkonen homewolrd, wood for Atredies, Byzantine(?) for the Imperian stuff, middle-eastern for Dune itself (and there a difference between city folk and Fremen). The Atredies are based on what appears to be 19th century Russian.

I always thought the Atreides were very 18th Century Prussian like, in apperance and in display of their virtues like duty and suffering for a cause.

Whereas the Harkonnen are very baroque in statute and behaviour.

House Corrino is kinda renaissance but also very ambigious.

Creators can be full of shit and they often are.

His Dune dream vanished and he went off to make a sci-fi master opus. If you've read both Incal and Dune, you'd know they're very different things. Dune is about the relationship of people with their environment, Incal is about spiritual enlightment.

Indeed. Even superfically, it looks more like the Fifth Element than Dune.

Not to mention he passed away, so there's just no way it is gonna happen now.

Well, yeah. I meant theoretically.

I made my unlock/wallpaper on of his pics in memorial.

I've read it, although ages ago. It was a borrowed copy. I may have to buy it someday.

Loved the true blue eyes on the TV series

and the hand signal talking

But they pushed the Butterfly hats a little too . . .

...

You mean The Fifth Element looks like The Incal? Hell, Mobius and Jodorowsky tried to sue Luc Besson for the similarities.

"looks like" is a reflexive operator. I realize which came first. I read the Incal 5 or 6 years before Fifth Element was made.

I didn't know that they tried to sue, though. That's interesting (especially considering Moebius worked on the film).

When I first saw Fifth Element, I assumed that Besson had written the Incal (becuase it had been so long prior that I read it, I had forgotten Jodorowsky's name).

I'm a fan of David Lynch but his Dune is shit. Lynch is good at making freaky movies like Blue Velvet and Eraserhead.

But Dune? That is not in his bailiwick.

I believe he refers to it as his first abortion.

I like it for what it is (being a fan of Lynch and Dune both) but it's a mess in so many ways. But an enjoyable mess.

Oh yeah, the Fifth Element borrowed a lot from Incal. Still, a nice movie in its own wierd ass way.

Really? Which one you got as your unlock/wallpaper?

I really love Lynch's films. They do tend to be hit & miss but there are a lot of great ones.

But big-budget sci-fi epic? Who the fuck thought that having David Lynch do that kind of movie was a good idea? That is the arena of Zemeckis, Lucas, Spielberg, Cameron, etc.

Having David Lynch make Dune is like having Tim Burton make Top Gun. Get the right person for the job.

It's a horrendous adaptation. Anyone going into that movie without having read the book was lost. It's incomprehensible.

Having read the book, the movie is like a fever dream outline of the novel. It's still not a good movie, but you can at least fill in the blanks.

I understood it fine when I was 10yrs old having no idea a book version existed.

Dune holds up well IMO. The heart plug scene is pure nightmare fuel and still disturbing to this day.

Great cast, fantastic score, and inspired art design. The Sci Fi channel remake of Dune is almost the same movie shot for shot (at keast all the high points) but without any of the above and it turned out rather awful IMO. However, the additional adaptations make it worth a viewing.

I think the Dune movie is great. It's slow burning for a sci fi movie but I think the deliberate pace works in it's favor. The various cuts are all interesting in their own right.

Well, to his credit he was mostly an unknown with a small list of films he had made, nobody knew what he was capable of. And I think studios were more willing to take chances.

That said... yeah, wtf.
