A Look at Japanese Game Sales on Steam - Summer sale 2017 edition [Steamspy figures]

This is the latest thread in a series that I started in May 2016, examining the sales of Japanese games on Steam via Steamspy numbers.

I know that several people here are interested in the sales fates of Japanese games on PC for various reasons. While we often get threads based on the sales of a specific game or series of games, this series aims to provide a more comprehensive snapshot of ownership for both new and legacy Japanese titles.

The plan is to release thread updates once every 3 months or so. This thread covers steam ownership to roughly the end of the Steam Summer Sale. Steamspy has a bit of a lag, and there is a daily variation in the reported ownership numbers for each games, so these figures are (pretty good) approximations only.

SOME NOTES:

1) All Steam numbers below reflect total owners on Steam, as reported by Steamspy on July 5, 2017. For those of you not familiar with Steamspy, keep the following in mind:
  • These numbers are total owners on Steam and not sales through the Steam store specifically. Steamworks titles purchased on Amazon, Gamersgate, Green Man Gaming, the Humble Store, at retail, through key sellers, in bundles, or as promotions with video cards or other hardware are included in the figures.
  • The numbers are all approximate. If you go to steamspy.com you can see the confidence intervals for each title. E.G. 10.000 +/- 2.000 would mean 8.000 to 12.000 owners.
  • You will note that some titles seem to have lost owners since the last thread. This is typically due to the old and updated sales falling into the same confidence intervals. If the ownership number increased or decreased slightly from the last update, you can assume no significant change in ownership.
  • Low selling titles (under 30k?) tend to be less accurate than higher selling titles. Because numbers are approximate, I have rounded all figures to the nearest 1000.
  • Steamspy has a lag of about 3 days. Games that were released within the past few weeks, or games that were heavily discounted over the weekend are most likely to be impacted. NOTE: Nier Automata is a notable example in this update. Expect sales to be higher than what is currently listed.

2) I have listed games by Steam publisher with a few noted exceptions. Series with more than 2 entries have been separated to make comparisons between entries easier. Otherwise publishers are listed alphabetically and games are listed in descending order of sales/owners.

3) I know that games like DmC and Dead Rising 2 had western dev studios working on them. If a traditionally Japanese series had a few western developed entries, I included them for comparison's sake as long as the publisher funding the title was still Japanese.

4) I have tried to include all of the major and notable minor Japanese publishers/localization companies that I know of (the list below contains close to 250 titles from 29 pubs). If I have made any glaring omissions, post the numbers below and I will add them to the OP. I omitted a few series (like Pac Man) on purpose as they differ widely in target audience from most other titles listed.

ADDENDUM: Steam has a billion visual novels. I have added some of the more notable titles based on requests in past threads. A small handful of these have been deleted due to no movement on very low ownership (<4k). If you are going to request more visual novels that even 95% of GAF is unaware of, please pick titles that have at least 10k owners. Also stick to games that received a retail release in Japan.

5) Free-to-play games, and retail games that have gone Free-to-play have been omitted. This means no Dead or Alive 5.

6) With a couple of exceptions, I left the Japanese indie scene alone. I am not knowledgeable enough to pick out Japanese indie titles from the Western indie devs making the same stuff, and I don't really think there is a meaningful regional difference between indie devs.

7) Thanks to Sergey Galyonkin for creating and running steamspy.com for all of our benefits.

NEW FORMAT:

I have switched to a chart format that is easier to read on Laptops and desktops. Some mobile devices may cut off the columns to the right of the chart, but you can double click each chart to see the full spread. I have listed ownership snapshots from this and the previous two threads. If I have time in the future, I will also add columns for the first two updates. Until then, feel free to click on the links to past threads above.

STEAM SUMMER SALE

There was some interest in tracking sales changes during the summer sale. For most titles, the summer sale didn't move significant number of copies. Here are the top 25 changes in users from June 21st to July 5th according to Steamspy. Keep in mind that non-Steam sales and Humble Bundles also affect these numbers.

Code:
[B]Rank	TITLE Change in users from 6/21 to 7/5[/B]

Decent numbers for Mushihime Sama and Death Smiles, but much lower for Daifukkatsu :( I hope the pc well hasn't run dry already for Cave.

Is it not wrong to say the only publishers that punch above their weights are the nekopara and neptunia ones?

The rest are like fairly what I expected of.

Nier Automata is powering through these charts.

Also Valkyrie Drive starting off at 21k is... wow. That coupon they offered for owners of SV putting in work.

Numbers are fun, numbers are sad.

Dragon's Dogma is higher than all of Itsuno-directed DMC games put together (counting both vanilla DMC 4 and SE), but lower than DmC.

Hyperdimension Neptunia Re:Birth 1 sold more than all 3 Trails in the Sky games combined.

Valkyria Chonicles outsold every individual Final Fantasy game with the exception of VII.

Fairy Fencer Advent...
That 80% really helped.
61k to 13k

Hyperdimension Neptunia Re:Birth 1 sold more than all 3 Trails in the Sky games combined.

IdeaFactory noticed how important the chinese market is. After they added chinese localizations to most of their games, the sales got really high.

Also I dont know why XSeed wont make a Trails bundle. Lately I buy a lot of bundles, because I can save some money on the games, if I already have one or more titles. I would have bought 3 already if XSeed would offer a bundle.

11K for Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky the 3rd seem quite low.
This number fits the percentage of players who have beaten Trails SC on Steam so far, however, and it makes sense that a direct follow-up to SC wouldn't appeal to anyone locked out of the story until they beat FC and SC. Let's sit on this one for a bit and wait to see numbers for more accessible XSEED releases coming soon.

It's not well-advertised yet, but XSEED's been working on a Trails bundle since at least the start of this year according to the Trails 3rd preview stream. A complete-the-series bundle would be perfect for the trilogy.

999/VLR deserve better than losing to freaking Conception

Conception is 20$, Nonnary games are 45$ and you have to buy "both" games. I know a lot of people who only wanted to play 999 or VLR, because they played one of them already. Instead they have to buy the "bundle". Also Conception 2 had 50%, Nonary only 25%.

They could just use the Steam API function for that. Like I said. I would have bought 3 already if it has a complete-the-series bundle.

100K for nier doesn't seem like a whole lot considering that it was consistently in the top 5.

I wonder how big the steam sale actually is nowadays.

I feel some developers got great attention when they started bringing games for the first time on steam, but it seems honeymoon is over for most of them. They're getting a hard time to sell their latest titles even from series that started strong.

I would argue there is "too much" on Steam now, so only good titles can sell and not just "any" japanese game.

Heck. 5-6 years ago I couldnt even imagine my 180 game wishlist would mostly consist of japanese games.

I'm pretty sure that the Steam best sellers chart is by revenue. Nier was selling for $42, which was higher than almost everything.

Nier beating most Final Fantasy games already is crazy, can't wait to see how far it goes

This is an actual crime. What is wrong with all of you?

Look at the bright side, it looks like sales are slowly growing!

34,5% of owners of Trails SC have the achievement for finishing the game (roughly 15870 players). So think of it this way: more than two thirds of the players who beat the second game purchased the third one.

Trails SC was at 20k owners in my first thread 13 months ago. So there is evidence that the slow burn strategy is paying off for XSEED with that series. It's been almost 2 years now, and I don't think that I have seen SC go on sale for more than 40% off its regular $30 price point.

I was hoping the game would do an increase of more than 3,000 during the summer sale.

It looks like Melty Blood doubled in ownership from March. You would think this would give Arc Sys some second thought on figuring out a way to make the game's netcode better.

I do agree. We're at this stage now.

Why am I seeing drops for a bunch of Capcom games? Just margin of error?

Refunds maybe? Capcom does have that special something.

Also lol @ Tekken 7 vs. KoFXIV. SNK stay losing, but I guess that's what happens when you try to release a niche game a year later than console at $60 around the same time a competitor is releasing (cheaper).

Nier running with those legs while RE7 limps along is sad to see from one angle and amazing from another.
Also surprising to see RE4 and REV2 on the bottom top 25 list.

The drop in sales from the first game to the 2nd and 3rd are pretty crazy. Even taking into account how long the original has been out.

Vanquish didn't sell as well as I expected. Bayonetta is pretty good though.

Vanquish was less popular at release, and it didn't have the benefit of a sequel to keep awareness up since last gen.

can you add Fata Morgana and Root Double, especially the latter gained a lot thx to the Humble Bundle and recent sale

I will add them shortly.

Mostly margin of error I would imagine. Some of those games are near 1M copies, so "dropping" 10k doesn't mean much.

Namco continues to do well as expected. They are the only reasonable Japanese publisher that seems to grasp the fact that releasing games on PC close or at their console release dates moves units.

SE has a good example with Nier but that one is plagued by a deficient port.

Vanquish sales are kind of disappointing after the huge outcry for a port and the reasonable price. I thought Platinum Games had a halo effect by pc gamers, but I guess Bayonetta is a better known ip. Namco Bandai is knocking it out of the park. It's good to see them rewarded for their effort.

pretty depressing numbers for Xanadu Next. I bought the game without knowing anything about it other than it being from Falcom. turned out to be a great game. Shame about its sales though.

That and Legend of heroes seems to have dropped off a cliff.

I would say Capcom and Namco are treating the PC platform the best. No real issues with any of their ports and they tend to release most titles the same day as on consoles.

Agree with Square though. They're taking baby steps and while some things are nice to see like Nier. I wish they'd go all in more.

I just noticed that Tekken 7 brutalized KOFXIV. It might be the best example to show that aesthetics and timing really do matter.

MvCI has the benefit of releasing at the same time as console, but the game looks awful. So I would expect a middle ground of sales excluding the bonus they get for having the Marvel IP. Maybe launch 150k sales (I am not good at predicting sales).

KOFXIV released almost a year later then on the console for $60. There is nothing to be surprised about there except for what the heck was the publisher thinking.

This is an actual crime. What is wrong with all of you?

Honestly most of the numbers are terrible, and some even went backwards or didn't even move. I'd be a little worried if I was a Japanese publisher. It probably costs next to nothing to put the game up on Steam, so there's not that much risk, but if you're a decent game on the Vita you could do better numbers than this. Xanadu Next would do way more than 8k on the Vita.

I get the feeling the Japanese game novelty is wearing off. Samurai Warriors: Spirit of Sanada 2k? Atelier Firis only 10k. I think gamers are getting saturated with Japanese games on the PC, and not picking them all up. I remember picking up Valkyria Chronicles up blind full price, but I don't think I'd do that anymore.

The other thing is PC gamers are notoriously picky, and many of these have port issues, not only that, they hardly stretch most gaming PCs in the west.
