A new era for PlayStation has just started

This really didn't need to be a post dude.

I enjoy creating threads, even more so when they get to page 2, like right now. <3

I would love Sony to take a more Apple like approach to just making sure stuff comes out when it's ready. They used to have that mindset a bit more than they do now.
Sony needs to take a more Apple like approach and R&D their way back to a proprietary Sony GPU/CPU.
The move to proprietary Apple silicon is hands down the smartest move Apple's made since Jobs left.

Oh yes, the era of extremely and conveniently late physical editions of remasters of old multimillion sellers which you have already bought digitally, possibly more than once.

You’re applying the wrong lessons.

There’s not much more to do when it comes to the current iPhone format, especially as it relates to annual progress, but they’ve certainly progressed since say 2020.

More importantly their products just work.

psvr2 is priced out of reach as well yet it has short comings. I’d rather a product that is niche have few shortcomings. It at least sets a high standard.
Iterating on past successes is why the tech industry in general is so boring now. Nobody dares to do anything different. Upgrades are relatively small and everything is predictable yet prices keep increasing as if there is something earth-shattering unveiled.

There was a rumour a year or two back that it was Jim Ryan who had ordered that the Playstation engineering team, lead by Mark Cerny would not be allowed to showcase, or present the internal workings and deep dive of the PS5 post launch, similar to what Cerny did with the Road to PS4 talk (post launch), and the other journalists he spoke to telling them about the deeper workings of the PS4 and it's customisations.

Curious that after Jim Ryan left, we got multiple PS5 Pro deep dives and very in-depth technical information which is very refreshing and I hope this continues for PS6.

Kind of an apples and oranges comparison.

The reason why Apple made their own silicon was because they could do it cheaper than farming it out. They could only do that because of the economies of scale in their products.

Sony simply doesn't sell enough product to make this viable.

The only way Sony would even consider this is if they were to put out a handheld and that handheld brand could consistently sell like 100 million units on top of what they're doing with the console business.

Apple also had the advantage of software being able to be written for the new silicon and the BC built in resulting in negligible performance issues, whereas Sony would almost certainly lose BC.

Iterating on past successes is why the tech industry in general is so boring now. Nobody dares to do anything different. Upgrades are relatively small and everything is predictable yet prices keep increasing as if there is something earth-shattering unveiled.

Easy to say from where you're sitting.

Look at the automobile. We've made tremendous strides with automobiles, but they're still the same basic design they were 100 years ago, but somehow you expect cell phones to drastically change ever 4 years? You look at the evolution of cell phones and smart phones, and there has been tremendous innovation. Your idea that there needs to be something earth shattering, just doesn't jive with reality.

Every year for the last 15 years, sony has held events in all regions they have offices in during what they call "Diversity Month". Every year, the CEO and other executives deliver a message to kick the week off. The last few years, that's been outgoing CEO Yoshida, and new CEO Totoki - the same people who were CEO and COO/CFO when Ghost of Tsushima came out.

Here's their message from last year. And here's Yoshida's message for International Women's Day this year.

You're fooling yourselves if you think this is a California thing.
That was prevalent on different political climate with allot of pressure from previous woke infested administration in USA. Even in the company where I work right now, that also happened where dei and woke agenda especially about twisted gender ideology was being push, but now its not prevalent anymore. I think with this new political climate and common sense is back, there is a big possibility that this will be a much different Sony, which I hope and pray will happen this time around.

It's been April 1st for quite several hours in Japan, a date that marks the start of a new accounting period for several Japanese companies, including Sony Group Corporation. Effective now, Sony Group has appointed Hiroki Totoki (previous President, COO and CFO since April 2023) as its new President and CEO, while the previous executive with role of CEO, Kenichiro Yoshida (from April 2018 to April 2025) has been appointed as Executive Chairman.
Now, purely on the gaming side; following the departure of previous President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, Jim Ryan (from April 2019 to April 2024), Hiroki Totoki (Chairman of SIE from October 2023 to April 2025) was appointed as Interim CEO for two months until June 2024, when the two CEO model was formed, having Hideaki Nishino as CEO of Platform Business Group and Hermen Hulst as CEO of Studio Business Group. Now, while these two roles will remain within the company, following the departure of Hiroki Totoki as Chairman, Hideaki Nishino has been appointed as the new President and CEO of SIE, becoming the true successor to Jim Ryan, and kickstarting a whole new era for PlayStation.
Hideaki Nishino joined SIE in January 2006, and has held several roles before becoming the head of the Platform Planning & Management (now called Platform Experience Group) division at SIE in April 2018, which, among several projects, most importantly oversaw the launch of PlayStation 5, PlayStation 5 Pro, PlayStation VR2 and PlayStation Portal.

BTW, both Nishino (in charge of Game & Network Services Business) and Hulst (in charge of Game Studio Business) also got officer roles at Sony Group Corporation, effective today.
Great and concise overview of the change!

Is it fair to speculate that Hulst was ostensibly demoted?

Curiously, I wonder what exactly made them (I assume this was a board decision?) change the roles from
Dual CEO to Nishino being sole CEO?

Concord? Tee hee

Sadly you are right, California is woke infested but I hope this time, there will be more influence from Japan head and with political climate change no more of that woke stuff especially gender ideology binary, pronouns, same sex romance, and trans craziness. That is why Im a bit worries about GOY even if its one of my most anticipated games since I love GOT Maybe transfer to none woke State in USA will be better like Texas and Florida. This state also has good tech and gaming pedigree.
Sucker Punch - as mostly all of Sony’s studios - are “champions” of the typical far-leftist BS; the actress they hired for Yotei has a very blatant record of bashing white men and men in general (Intergalactic’s lead actress does too, but not as much) - now you can argue that it won’t affect the game, but when someone is that up their own ass about their political beliefs you can be sure it’s going to come out - so prepare when Atsu’s actress, Erika(?) is/may do press or whatever….she’ll make the requisite comment about Trump or whatever. I’d bet six packs of tube socks an a Jimmy John’s sub.

Samsung at least has the fold and flip models. I just don’t think Apple is doing anything special, they add another camera and maybe change the screen a bit and slap on a new number and that’s it. Why do I need to upgrade from my iPhone 11? I expect to upgrade once the battery is dead. I don’t like that, it’s boring, every year is another disappointment when new phones are shown. And Apple Watch is just a rectangular mini iPhone. They’re stuck design wise. And I say this as a long time iPhone user who has tried Android and gone ”Nah.” on that whole segment of the industry. My negativity comes from frustration.

When it comes to gaming I would like new user interfaces. Not for consoles but imagine a Quest controller for analog stick movement while still using the mouse for aiming on PC. That would be cool. WASD controls sucks, it’s 80’s arrow keys controls that has somehow survived for 40 years, but with letters. 🤷‍♂️

The iPhone 16 is 84 ounces lighter than the iPhone 11 a 13% reduction in weight.

It also has a 86% better performance, an OLED screen vs LCD, a higher resolution screen, HDR, nearly 4x brighter, double the internal storage, scratch resistant screen with ceramic shield, double the ram, 14% bigger battery, fast charging, reverse wired charging, magsafe wireless charging, better battery optimization, a 48 megapixel camera vs 12MP, HDR/Dolby Vision recording, e.t.c.

You can ignore all the upgrades and think that drastic change for the sake of drastic change is valuable, but the reality is these phones are considerably better. And no, the Apple Watch is not just a mini iPhone.

I don’t see any reason to upgrade when looking at those upgrades. I don’t play games on my phone, I just listen to music, platinum the internet, watch game/movie trailers, takes photos that’s good enough, fiddle with AI, lose money on stocks, pay my bills, can already use wireless charging. Would’ve upgraded long ago if they brought something cool into the mix. But here we are, another year of skipping the new phone unless the battery health force me upgrade (down at 70% now).

Because as they both stated, it was not a dual CEO thing, it was a two CEO thing. Now, it could make not much sense, but Hulst wasn't exactly a CEO of SIE, but rather a CEO of his own group, and he reported to Chairman, Hiroki Totoki; he will continue to be the CEO of that same group, but he now will report to Hideaki Nishino, who got a promotion.
Also, as I said, Hulst got an officer role at Sony Group, he's way above of where he was just a year ago.

The best bet we have for them is for them to be licensed and made popular again by other companies, which is better than Sony sitting on them. I'd love to see a remaster of Arc the Lad for example. There are a ton of IP that Sony has that they just don't have the studios to develop against. Moving forward, I think we'll see Sony either farm these games out to developers or license them out to publishers.

Jak and Daxter
Arc the Lad
Legend of Dragoon
Motorstorm
Syphon Filter
SOCOM
Killzone
Uncharted
Sly Cooper
Wipeout
Wild Arms
Coolboarders
Demolition Derby
Twisted Metal

It's all on the table now.

Sony should team up with Codemasters to get them to make another MotorStorm. There are loads of ex-Evolution staff over there who made Dirt 5, which was pretty good imo. Stick it on all the platforms, I don't care.

After Bluepoint's game was cancelled, wasting years of their time, they need some quick wins. A Killzone collection in 4K60 should be pretty straightforward to get off the ground for Bluepoint.

Whoever ends up doing Uncharted again should probably just do Syphon Filter next as it would work pretty well with the same third person formula.

I suppose the developers of the Redout series could make a new Wipeout but their games always felt a bit off to me.

I think there are reasons for concern

  • Failures surrounding Audeze and PS Link
  • Failed implementation of VRR
  • Reduced quality PC Ports
  • Failure to port games that would be most successful on PC: GT7, Demon's Souls, Dreams
  • Misuse of a studio like Bluepoint

I think half of these "reasons for concern" aren't even that bad of an issue. Points 1, 4, and 5 aren't even issues at all LOL!
