Same thing happened in Iran and the same thing will happen in Europe.

Were Muslims a minority in Iran and Afghanistan in the 60s?

This wasn't even that long ago, aren't people pissed at how the talibans are keeping them from returning to prosperity?
Don't people want to return to the good old days before the Talibans came to be in charge?

Fuck the USA for ruining such a prosperous nation.

Where did you copy this from?

Reminds me of Iran before the coup.

Hahahaha. What a kidder.

Yeah, so, when Iran was instilled a dictator by the west and they got fed up with the US's bullshit and overthrew him?

You mean when the US went in and made the Taliban the ruling power to fight our mortal enemy, the Soviets?

Yeah, shut the fuck up.

Oh boy:

Some more facts that will lead to the downfall of the Western Infidels by those that hate us stupid Westeners, who continue to have a complacent attitude. I can’t believe the practice of placing devout infidel haters to prominent positions in Government and is common knowledge as stated at end of the article below. Holy crap “wake up people”.

Adapted from Dr. Peter Hammond’s book: Slavery, Terrorism and Islam: The Historical Roots and Contemporary Threat

Islam is not a religion, nor is it a cult. In its fullest form, it is a complete, total, 100% system of life.

it's sad the hyper fundamentalists and changing the definition of what is to be ''religious''

setting back these places by centuries or even millennias

I am pretty sure the USA is what happened.
I'm a bit rusty when it comes to cold war antics, can anyone can shed some light on what exactly happened?

After the Ruskies attacked, US backed the Afghani's to fight them. After that was all said and done, they needed someone to protect the border because they weren't going to do it. US gave the Taliban (at the time, the largest organized group) power.

There were fundamentalists during the fighting, but after that was all said and done, the Taliban used the chaos to create an establishment. US saw that establishment... bam... they become ruling power.

Sacha Baron Cohen hasn't aged one bit.

Sexy man. I'd love to look like that guy. Bikini and all.
I'd like to look like that guy though.

Setting them back before even the religion was established... There used to be a focus on science and math... heh... hasn't been that way probably post Ottoman Empire.

It's like going from the "World of Balance" to the "World of Ruin" in Final Fantasy VI.

I can't believe a place can become so ugly so quickly.

Was Communist Afghanistan a force for good? Like did they improve life significantly there or do we only look back at it fondly because of how bad things got with the Taliban?

First of all, most of these pictures seem to just center on Kabul. What about the rest of the country?

Anyway, from what I understand, shit got like this because the US helped kick out the Soviets, then just left. The US is desperately trying not to repeat the same mistake, but wasn't ready for the job of nation-building when it invaded.

There was a similar thread about Pakistan as well. And look at Pakistan now. Fucking Soviets through the whole region back by a hundred years.

Soviets are the ones who helped build the country up and provided them with billions in aid beginning as early as the 1920s. After Afghanistan had their revolution in 78 they were pro-poor and had a socialistic agenda and continued to be very friendly with Russia. America couldn't stand for this even if it was what their people wanted, so Jimmy Carter signed a covert directive and started funding a terrorist organization that included Osama Bin Laden as one of its leaders with billions in training and weapons. Russia was reluctant to send in troops, but had signed a treaty with Afghanistan in 78 that promised military support, so after repeated requests by the Afghans they finally did and the country has been in turmoil ever since.

So the war between the Mujahedin and the Soviet only started when the US began funding them ? Wasn't there any war before ?

Not just Russia. Afghans fist and foremost paid their lack of foreign intelligence strategy.
The US have done great damage to the region as a whole. last but not least being the uranium bombardment of agricultural surfaces by ISAF. Successive Pakistani and Iranian governments have pushed their agenda in the region without consideration for the welfare of the country. Most of these policies ended in making the situation worse.

Basically, the region has been everyone's toy to play with. Absolutely horrible.

I've never been to Afghanistan myself, but I have plenty of friends who have and I've seen their deployment photos.

What a beautiful country it used to be.

Actually, in hindsight it may have been a bad idea to pass up the opportunity to deploy there, I would have loved to see it.

I will gladly claim it would have had a positive influence on Afghanistan, the Soviet Union would have collapsed in 91 no matter what. They could have ended up like all other former Soviet Stans: Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, they were all majority Muslim countries before joining the Soviet Union and still are today, they enjoyed prosperity and rarely ever make it into the news headlines because the moderate face of Islam isn't the one we are supposed to think about.
