Just finished watching Hotel this morning and it was one of my favorite AHS seasons. I had so much stuff to watch last year that I stupidly gave up on AHS after the previous season had only been so-so.

I liked the first episode of Roanoke and I will stick with it this year. I already gave up on Fear the Walking Dead cause of that stupid first episode, so that's one less show to watch.

I've always been a fan of the camp so I found the first episode a little dull but it certainly lives up to the horror name.
I see Kathy Bates is doing a weird accent again, should be interesting.

I'm in for the season as always

LOL! I live in Roanoke, Va. so when I saw the title card I did a double take and was like - no way! xD

I'm already hooked episode one just because I love mystery pseudo documentary reenactment type shows. So interested to see where this goes.

Hmm...so it's just Roanoke. Huh. I'm intrigued, but still wish for an anthology of different stories.

As a huge fan of horror re-enactment based shows like A Haunting, Paranormal Survivor, etc. I'd love for them to keep up that style the whole season.

I like those shows as well. The interviews in this felt kind of cheesy at times -- mostly the husband's. I hope they'll be better as it progresses.

So...

AHS seasons

1 nice
2 half very good half blah
3 trash
4 some good things, but trash overall
5 lady gaga acting as lady gaga, but good vibes

6 idk

Agreed, but I'd be harder on 5 if I was making the list. It was melodramatic boredom after the first couple of episodes.

Ok I was able to watch the first episode with FX's "guest pass" thing they do on their site, that was REALLY cool. Very spooky, very Season 1/2 vibe. If they can keep that up the whole season and not totally shit the bed I'm so down.

Oh, it's you. When is AHS not melodramatic tbh? Seriously, I can't think of a single season without toe-curling melodrama.

The boredom is on you, though. How anyone could be bored with Hotel's delightful menagerie of characters is beyond me.

I really want to love this.
Try mistrusting your instincts.

Repeat after me: "Fair is foul and foul is fair..."

She's probably some ancient eldritch entity. Remember the earth "breathing"?
Slay*, Gaga, yas! Gag them with your opulent swamp hag realness!

* I mean iterally slay. You know, because she played a killer last season and it seems like she might be playing a killer this season. It's like a play on words where...you know what, never mind. Don't even worry about it OK? Just forget it.

I want to give this show another chance, I really do.

Liked seasons 1 & 2 a lot, watched most of 3 and thought it was horrible, same for the first episode of season 4. Haven't watched anything from season 5.

So should I watch the new season? Does it actually have horror elements to it again?

Yes. I don't like American Horror Story much at all (I mainly watch it with my girlfriend), but this season premiere was legitimately creepy. It downplayed the campiness of the previous seasons and had some really neat horror moments.

As I said earlier in this thread, this episode felt like multiple vignettes of horror stories strung together and I really enjoyed it. I have a feeling that the rest of the season will be a let down, though, especially if they try to explain some of the events of this episode.

Best show on TV last night. It was like a completely different show from the previous seasons. After the first season the series relied to heavy on the best elements where by the third time around they were beyond used up let alone the fourth, fifth and sixth.

Really, really dislike the fake interview / documentary format. Completely destroys all the suspense and pacing. Terrible.

It also basically confirms who survives (everyone of note so far).

That was interesting

I got a few Blair Witch vibes from the stick figures.

I had no idea Cuba Gooding Jr. was in this season.

So, how was it?

I absolutely loved se1 and se2 and thought the rest of them were varying levels of 'meh'.

I liked Season 3 although it felt like an entirely different show since it wasn't scary in the least and was more of just a group of catty witches trying to fuck one another over but I agree that 4 & 5 were total meh. 4 had incredible potential to be really unsettling and creepy and frightening and it was completely wasted (as I've said before I understand why they did it to a degree but still) and 5 wasn't even scary, just violent and really disgustingly gory. The only part of 5 that got my hopes up was the baby and that never even goes anywhere, and you only see it for a flash. Waste.

This is only the first episode but it's much, MUCH more like seasons 1 & 2. So far the tone is serious, dark, mysterious. There's some very creepy/weird/unsettling events that happen and the location/people have huge potential to be actually scary this time, and it feels like they might actually go for it instead of making the scary things sympathetic.

They changed the format, it's done kind of like a documentary where they're interviewing people and then it flashes back and shows the events they're describing play out. The only reason I don't like it is because I literally thought to myself "Well obviously they're gonna survive this since they're being interviewed about it"so it takes some of the bite out of it, but at the same time you never know what twists they might have up their sleeve. I don't think we've seen anyone in the interviews from the waist down so someone could be paralyzed in a wheelchair or missing a leg or something.

Backwoods hick/bumpkin/hill people terrify the shit out of me so I have high hopes that this season is actually scary again, Seasons 1 & 2 were easily my favorite.

This actually looks good! I haven't been a fan of the last few seasons, but this seems more restrained so far.

I'm not sure how I feel about the dissonance of having different actors doing the talking head documentary part vs the rest of the show. Maybe I'm missing something.

I hope it doesn't devolve into schlock. All these seasons always have tons of potential, but then Ryan Murphy tells restraint to fuck off.

Yes, it's so annoying. Season 4 went there almost immediately, although I enjoyed the premier. Season 3 had a great start imo, and then half way through I was wondering what the point of all this was....

Haven't watched this premier yet... maybe I'll give it a shot.

Am I the only one waiting for the show to do a dramatic re-enactment of Roanoake, so then we'll have THREE Shows within a show?

I would not put it past them to have a character actually DIE, but they decided to mess with the footage and put in the actors just due to.... reasons.

Or there's always the possibility that My Roanoake Nightmare IS the found footage.

It doesnt feel like AHS at all. Which is a good thing.

Go all Too Many Cooks and have the "real people" segments start becoming increasingly unsettling and fucked up.

I don't care for the documentary stuff. But the rest seemed different for AHS and was actually creepy. Every year I get pulled in only to bail halfway through though.

Holy shit what if the reason the people in the talking heads segments are not the same as the flashbacks is because the flashbacks are what actually happened and the talking heads are the actors doing reenactments since the real people died O:

It would be interesting if they played with that.

There must be some rational for why there are different actors doing the same characters for the two parts of the show, right?

I can't imagine them doing this documentary style if they're not going to play with it. I'm expecting some insane meta/surreal horror stuff

That's what I'm thinking as well.

We're talking about a show that wasn't content with just the Devil and the supernatural and threw in Aliens and a serial killer in the mix.

I really did not care for Episode 1.

I'm sure the documentary format will get shaken up later, but the meta re-enactment totally deflated the creepy horror moments since no one was ever in real danger and no real tension.

Maybe it'll turn all True Detective later and have the "real" couple go back to the house?
