This might be stretching the definition, but hear me out: Dance in the Vampire Bund. There might be a lack of Horror (idk, watched it like 6 years ago) but whatever you find it might lack, it makes more than up for it by casting Aoi Yuuki as the Vampire MC.

e: Just checked MAL, holy shit, I actually rated this 9.5 out of 10. 9 of these points probably being on the account of Aoi Yuuki, but I probably should give this a rewatch too.

Thanks for the recommendation. Seems like something I'll enjoy.

Just Shiki and Castlevania.
Seconding Vampire Hunter D bloodlust. If you're okay with more action-oriented anime, Hellsing Ultimate is also pretty decent. Undead Girl Murder Farce is a detective mystery that has some vampire episodes in it. Also, Vampire Princess Miyu is an older anime that's also pretty good but is kind of not really horror, but it does have some horror elements

Thank you. Turns out I have Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust on my list already, but not the others. Undead Girl Murder Farce seems really interesting, ad so does Princess Miyu. Will give these a watch. Thanks again.

Undead Girl Murder Farce is kind of goofy so just go in with the knowledge that it has some slapstick comedy in it (as it is, after all, a farce). So if you're looking for super cereal brooding dark vampire mystery... well, it ain't it. Think Sherlock Holmes with Watson being a dude who's simultaneously good at fighting, yet acts clownishly.

I don't mind goofy or slapstick. I'm sure I'll enjoy it.

Watched Vampire Hunter D and thought it was excellent.

Manga is better I heard
Yes, Tokyo Ghoul manga is better. The first anime cuts so many crucial moments and arcs. The final fight isn't even in the anime and the second half of anime is not canon or rearranged stupidly.

:re is even worse adaptation. They cut like more than 70% percent of the manga. And the villain is underdeveloped and makes no sense because of this.

The first Tokyo Ghoul was one of my favorite mangas before I read Steel Ball Run. It's a fun manga that feels battle-shounen like despite being a seinen. The manga has so many badass looking panels and moments and a shocking ending until :re happens. :re has 2 arcs that are good, but the rest ruins the series by not answering questions and dropping plot threads that were teased in the prequel. Also, some of the plot threads that were do resolved were resolved in very unsatisfying ways.

I also have love/hate relationship with the main villain. I love that he is a troll, but hated that he was the final boss. Also, in the end the whole story goes off the rails and the ending feels weak compared to the original ending. The story felt even more battle shounen-like than the original. That doesn't mean that both mangas don't have some fucked up shit because they do.

Overall, the first manga is good, the sequel is mediocre, but I don't regret reading them.

I watched the first 2 episodes of the Oshi No Ko live action adaption. This show doesn't work at all without having seen the anime (or knowledge of the source) since it omitts so much. So you really need to see this more as an "addition" to the anime for example.

And in that way, it's amazing. The first episode is corny af and the whole thing doesn't NEARLY work as good in live action as in anime, but I can appreciate the good moments, and there were quite a few. I am highly biased though since Saito Asuka, herself a former idol of Nogizaka46, plays Hoshino Ai, and I just adore her (I could easily extend this two me fawning in three long winded paragraphs over how Ashurin was part of peak Nogi and no group managed top that since, but I'll spare you the details for now). "That Moment" might have even made me shed a very manly tear, maybe two at most.

I have to emphasize what a great job they did with casting. The actress for Ruby and Kana really carry these shows, since essentially this adaptation relies on you being able to emphatize with these characters. And since they're insanely cute it's easy to do so. Also, wardrobe really deserves whatever they have equivalent to an Emmy over there, the girls are dressed amazingly. Cinematography is also surprisingly well done. So even if there are a lot of shortcomings, it's engaging in a way that makes you root for these characters.

I'm looking forward to watching Episode 3 tomorrow, it's when the Reality Program comes into play. After these two episodes I have absolute faith that these will be glorious.

Some screenshots to reiterate my points about their outstanding cuteness, wardrobe and even composition.

Huh, that's funny they made a lot of change. Even though in original story, there's a critic of too much change in live-action adaptation in one of the arc.

Started DanMachi (or: Dungeon ni Deai wo Motomeru no wa Machigatteiru Darou ka - Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?). About three episodes in and it's actually quite decent? I'm enjoying it a lot more than Shangri-La Frontier tbh which is getting increasingly more lame. I'm about 18 episodes deep into that one though so I might as well finish it.

Also going through Birdie Wing: Golf Girls' Story (at 2x speed lol) and it's alright. Unless it really picks up in quality I doubt I'll bother with the second season. Might give Rising Impact a go (also a golf anime) instead because at least the animation seems much better there.

You sound surprised? It's a fun show.
I don't know, I was never familiar with it until recently and the title alone is kind of cringy from a plot perspective. Also I'm kind of over light novel or isekai/RPG-based stuff so ya.

Anyway I'll definitely stick with it, had some proper laugh out loud moments already hah.

Best thing about birdie wing is the theme song, it's incredibly mid

ShangriLa is also mid, it's just got decent production values, and as someone who's caught up with the manga .. remains that way. In fact it's one of those "why haven't i dropped this yet" series. Danmachi is... Well, let's say it starts out fun, with some good moments, takes a dip in quality, then picks up(season 4 is quite good imo).

Danmachi author is pretty good. If you like Danmachi, you can try Wistoria: Wand and Sword. It's also by the same author.

Wow that's Omori too? How tf do they have the time, they're writing a billion spinoffs for danmachi and that at the same time?

I think for LN authors, the schedule is more relaxed than manga author. There's another LN author who also published a lot of titles, but I forgot their name.

Yooo I'm two episodes into Hell's Paradise and this show is cool! Has some Sekiro vibes with a lone shinobi, an elixer of immortality, strange Paradise-like area.

God bless the X algo randomly pushing anime clips. Learnt about both this and Summertime Rendering via random X posts in my timeline.

I recently took the plunge into anime.

It was Dandadan on Netflix that got me hooked. That led to me watching Vinland Saga on Netflix. Also excellent.

Then I subbed to Crunchyroll because I wanted to watch Frieren, which is not on Netflix. Then I started watching Apothecary Diaries. So I am watching four AAA anime series.

Crunchyroll is such a vast sea of anime that it is bewildering. Any recommendations for shows that are not gratuitously violent or too pervy or too depressing? And I enjoy top tier quality visuals, which are present in what I am watching now.

I find that good characters can be more important than good story. If you care about the characters, the story can be anything and still enjoyable. The story in Dandadan is ridiculous, it is the characters that make it so good.

I’ve heard that Re:Zero is good.

I watched a lot of Monster but found it a bit depressing. I will go back to it at some point.

Go watch Kaiji: Ultimate Survivor, it's only two seasons long but full of amazing twists and turns. Odd Taxi is a lot more recent and is just a delight (complete opposite of Kaiji in terms of what type of show it is though). There's a ton of Shonen anime that I would recommend but if you're into visuals then give Mob Psycho 100 a try. It's super compelling and stands out from the crowd in a lot of other aspects as well.

Re:Zero is overrated imo and quite grating. Maybe I watched it at the wrong time but if you're not looking for something depressing then definitely steer clear of that one lol.

I personally prefer anime to be as non-anime as possible, if that makes sense. Which is also why I couldn't get on with Demon Slayer or Spy X Spy where you have one of those 'cutesy' characters in a high pitched squeek voice that completely ruins the vibe of an otherwise interesting premise. As the kids say: Miss me with that shit (and it's why I loved Frieren as it does away with all those typical convetions. So good choice on that one!).

the two seasons of the jdrama Jin got added to netflix, it aired in 2011 and I watched it back then and a big favorite of mine. Its based off a manga, its a good watch if you like medical series and old japan. Pretty much a doctor getting isekai'd into late 1800's Japan

The ballroom dance in Episode 15 of Frieren was remarkably animated. The most fluid piece of animation I have seen in a TV anime series.

Just finished watching Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade (1998) and really enjoyed it! Cant believe it's taken me 20+ years to get around to it lol but found it to be perfect for a quiet and dark day. The animation and general aesthetic were fantastic, however the plot itself wasn't particularly engrossing. Loved the soundtrack though.

I'll take any recommendations of films/shows that have a similar dark atmosphere and 'vibe'.

Re: Zero is one of the few isekais I respect, mainly because it appears to be written with an idea of where the story needs to go, unlike many light novel adaptions.

Mob Psycho 100% would be my recomendation, covers all those bases.

Just finished Dr. Stone: New World - Part 2 and I'm amazed by how stupid it's become. At first I thought this show would have some semblance to reality in how they procure new technology or its utilization but they basically just conjure up tech from thin air and have it be perfectly proportioned as well (quite an oversight to have even kitchen equipment be pristine lol).

Anyway I am still enjoying it but it really is just another Shonen with 'science' as a substitute for magic and power levels. I'll continue watching it if only to see how much more bat shit crazy it gets.

damn, getting hit hard by animes this season with split seasons.
Rezero just stopping in the middle, and Danmachi also got split and delayed all the way till Spring, and now also with Squid game.

The Fate/Strange Fake situation is beyond obnoxious now. At the rate they're going by the point it actually gets rolling properly it's going to have been more than two years since Whispers of Dawn.

Finished Frieren (the episodes so far). That was an impressive work of art.

I was surprised that Dandadan ended after only 12 episodes (and on a cliffhanger). I have to wait until July for the next episodes.

So episode 7 of Dandandan fucked me up, I was not prepared for something so well done. Music + animation + story on level rarely seen in modern anime.

Return to standard stupidity of the show after that was quite jarring, lol.

Gotten back into anime this season.

Dandadan is a delight and somehow not cringeworthy, which is quite the achievement.

Frieren is just fantastic and quite thought provoking.

I didn't like Orb at first, but I've really taken to its dark and serious tone, which is a real rarity in anime.

Konosuba... I can't stop watching it, but the tropes and cringe are off the charts. The self awareness helps and I assume its part parody?

Re: Zero is a much better isekai, but there's still too much cringe in it.

Apothecary Diaries is not something I expected to like. I love it. I'd put it off because the premise didn't sound appealing.

I'm looking for other stuff to watch, but I'm not sure where to start. I guess I'm looking for something a bit more serious and mature, with less of the kids and teenagers as the protagonists.
