As we are still waiting for a full release, Star Citizen is closing in on $600M of backing

$590M at the moment.

The game still has a long way to go. It's playable but needs a fair bit more time for bug fixes, polish, and other modules and features that have yet to be implemented. I don't think it's coming out in the next year...or the next two years for that matter but yeah.

What are your thoughts? Biggest heist in gaming history? For those who actively follow, are you satisfied with the progress? Do you believe it's truly something special in the making?

$600M is hard to wrap one's head around. Could it be the most expensive piece of media ever produced? I know no other movie or game comes even close.

Is it a playable game, or just a mish mash of demo's?
Imagine if Bethesda had 600 million to develop a game. It would be three times the size and scope of Starfield.

It's a cult at this point, where only the people with tons of virtual spaceships are the true believers.

As for when the game will be "done", the answer is never. They're already in the DNF death spiral, where it has taken so long that the devs are spending time remaking the content they already made. Once you get into that loop it never ends. But because it is being funded by a bunch of true believer cultists, the devs will never be held accountable or have to produce anything.

Is it a playable game, or just a mish mash of demo's?

Starfield spent 8 years in development, tons of delays, MS resources brought in to bring it over the finish line, I doubt it cost $600 million but it would not surprise me if it was $200-$300M.

It's definitely playable and not just a demo. There is some cool stuff to do but the game is still ways off and it certainly doesn't feel like it has a production budget of $600M.

Chris Roberts has bought a lot of yachts with that money. I believe early on he had 1, at this point he might have several private jets.

Vids of the game are still massively entertaining to me so I'm all for them continuing to work on it if people are still willing to fund it.

Starfield didnt spent 8 years in development. After Fallout 4 was released in November 2015 so basically end of the year, the majority of the Bethesda Maryland team worked on DLCs for F4 for almost 2 years, including the great and story heavy Far Harbor. You could say at the earliest that the main Bethesda team was "free" to work on Starfield probably from second half of 2017.

And this doesnt include that a significant portion of the team helped with Fallout 76, which yes was mainly developed by Bethesda Austin, but they got help.

Starfield was made in less than 5 years of full development/production. Planning/scope shouldnt count as development as thats not what the majority of the team works on.

Star Citizen is a joke and Squadron 42 will never come out.

It actually hasn't cost them $600 million. $600 million is how much they've earned in backing money over the years.

Also, Star Citizen isn't just one game, it's actually two games disguised as one.

The first game is your traditional AAA single player experience and that's called Squadron 42. The second game is Star Citizen which most of us are familiar with and is the MMO based on the Squadron 42 universe and is pretty much an entire game on its own.

Both games are being co-developed and a few years ago they decided to move most of the devs working on Star Citizen to Squadron 42 to get it out sooner. Rumors are that Squadron 42 could be releasing in a year or two from now. Star Citizen itself isn't going to get a full release for a while.

I wonder how their taxes look.

or their payroll.
The UK side is publicly available due to some subsidy RSI receives for hiring brits.

I enjoy star citizen. Theres nothing like it when it works. Working is never guaranteed with 90% of ship losses being due to server bugs or other nonsense. I think the game has a few years left before funding collapses. The game can't afford to release because release means losing its primary revenue stream

I pray that one day a good publisher see this and try to compete. A Sony game like this would sell well. Nintendo could to it too on the switch 2. With Starfield, and/ or Rare doing the same it could be amazing. There is a thirst for those kind of game. Let someone do it right.

No because there's no way they put that amount of money in that game. The real amount that was used to for the actual game is unknown. The rest of the cash is probably sitting in a tax haven.
Yeah, no.

They are obliged to report full financials to UK's Company House, since they are UK based too.

I don't even know if there is any feature left for them to even market at this point that Starfield or No Man Sky don't do better.

Starfield not being online might be irrelevant as that could literally be 1 element they work on in some sequel and it would already be closer to being a real thing then this. At lot of what Star Citizen does well, Starfield will eventually do, its such an obvious progression its not even funny.

Go from a smaller ship to some mothership....that sounds like some fucking DLC for Starfield or in Starfield 2.

Online play regarding trading items, DLC expansion or in Starfield 2.

I just don't know where Star Citizen goes from here tbh, a better team was able to do the thing they attempted in less time and half the fucking money, they basically gave that whole idea for free and they could have made more money if that thing was actually fucking REAL as a final thing, vs beta for life type thing.

Look at GTA V right now in regards to its online.

Starfield puts some online DLC type thing where you can trade ships, dock other people's ships in some PVP zone area or something, I just don't now how Star Citizen survives a release with a game by such a trusted developer

Re-read that sentence again. Then again.

Almost 10 years, budget is Skyrim, RDR2, GTAV combined. Still not out.

At this point the govt needs to get involved and shut this scam down. Arrest chris Roberts and make him give all the money back.
Arrest him? For what? The game is playable and what is there is very impressive. Launching from that Megacity to orbit seamlessly is a technical marvel (from what I have watched on YouTube, I don't own the game).

It's obviously not a scam, just incredibly poorly managed and suffering from extreme feature bloat.

But I don't think you can arrest someone for being a poor manager. Well, maybe in Russia.

It's scam.
People are funding this game and it's it not even a fully released game.
That is how scams work. They don't give you the full feature in hopes of scamming more from you.

That's bullshit. Duke nukem forever only cost like 10-15 million for their hundreds of years of Broussard Odin sleep.

Oh, good to know that it's "playable" and all that money didn't go to waste. Now we just need another billion or so, plus another 12 years in the oven, and we're good to go for a 1.0 release!

Can't wait!

I don’t understand what’s with this game’s development, is it in development hell or are they just keep adding stuff?
