What?
It looks insane.
HDR is deep and gorgeous too. O play on lg c1 using dtm and 4000 nits setting in game. No change to exposure or whatever the 2nd setting is.

Foliage is flickering with pssr during winter. Clearly an oversight. But other than that is looks crazy good.
4000 nits?! That's wild. I'll have to try that. For me, in balanced mode, HDR looks pretty terrible at 1500 nits which is the max my TV can handle. I've read other user's say similar things so I know I'm not going crazy.

I have a CX which has a peak brightness of 800 nits and i have set the ingame max to 800. It looks absolutely stunning.

The game is highly dependent on time of day, weather and season settings. Keep playing the game and eventually more and more seasons will unlock and you will start to see what the game can truly offer.

Turn off PSSR and see if that helps. PSSR is causing issues with HDR according to a youtuber.

Yeah, at night or low light it looks pretty amazing. However when it gets brighter out that's when things become super noticeable. The flickering of large sections of trees on the horizon or near by foliage is the most noticeable. This is all in balanced mode. I recently switched to quality mode with PSSR on and it's worlds better but it definitely sucks not being able to take advantage of the higher frame rate.

Depends if you are using hgig or dtm.
hgig - you set nits to what your tv can really handle - in my case 800 nits.
DTM - set the game to what your TV expects for tonemapping. IN case of LG oleds, it's 4000 nits. The whole job of Dynamic tone mapping is to take that 4000 nits and map it out (tone down) to be displayed on my 800 nits tv as best as possible.

At least this is how I understand it.

Appreciate that explanation. My set was professionally calibrated by a very reputable company and the tech turned DTM and HGIG off. I suppose I could try setting the max luminance to 4000 as well as turning on DTM to see what happens but I believe he calibrated the tv in a way that those settings aren't needed if that makes sense. Maybe it was an error on their end? What really kills it for me is how absolutely stunning Horizon FW looks and then being disappointed by many other games. Makes me think it's not my tv but the game's optimization. Strange we don't all have the same experience with Shadows.

Turning off HGIG is bizarre. HGIG needs to be on for games. It is literally the standard set by game devs and what all games are developed against.

DTM is just a brighter picture if you are not happy with how dark HGIG is. I prefer DTM over HGIG but sometimes i set it to HGIG for a game and forget that its been on for months and i dont really notice a difference.

Anyway, turn on HGIG for sure. See if that helps. But like i said, there is currently an issue with PSSR and HDR so try turning off PSSR first.

I'll mess around with the settings later this anfternnon and I might message my calibrator too. If I get an explanation that is helpful I'll share it. Thanks

This game is beautiful but the story is beyond awful.Worst English voice acting since Resident Evil 1(not really but close).

Just make the storytelling linear
Yes, I don't get the devotion to open ended missions, who cares if you can choose who to target? it ruins storytelling and creates so many issues. They should make missions linear and follow a through-line.

Valhalla and Shadows both suffer because of this, almost all the missions are disconnected from each other. It's the same shit in the new Far Cry as well.

the "professional" calibration is a fucking bullshit.
The tvs are calibrated out of the factory. At least one of the modes should be proper.
What TV do you have?

You know I miss the old tombs from the Ezio trilogy, they were really interesting from a design perspective, there was a lot of parkour and they felt deeper
Yeah, there were fewer tombs, but a bit more unique, I really want an AC game smaller, more focused with more intricate interiors/castles/tombs/whatever.

I mean, I enjoy open world, I liked Odyssey very much, but maybe the ratio of open world game vs smaller/open areas type game in AC should be 1:1.

I'll let individuals more knowledgeable than me debate on professional calibrations being "bullshit" but to answer your question I have a 77inch G4.

yeah. calibrating these high end tvs is nonsense in my opinion.
All you need to do with g4, is to either select one of filmmaker modes or just use game mode but change color temp to warm50 (closer to d65). It's pretty much spot on.
All you needed to do watch read a reddit thread or watch 1 hdtvtest video.
Warm50, game optimizer, pc input label (not needed above c1), disable ai, disable power saving, disable sharpening. done.
I am obsessed with these tvs... I have the service remote and soe stuff disabled there too but it's no rocket science.
The idea of spending 3k$ on the tv and to have it calibrated is triggering me, so sorry about that :P

HGIG vs DTM is more personal and on game by game basis. I just use DTM for pretty much everything because fuck hdr accuracy. Games dont support hgig for the most part anyway.
But running without any tone mapping?! Are these calibration professional fools expecting you to only watch 4k uhd movies straight from the source?! Even most movies are not 4k nits. Tone mapping is a must.

Did they gave you a profile to use on windows or did they calibrate in the tv advanced setting?

This is one of those games that are good enough to play through, but not engaging enough to make you play several hours a day.

So it takes fucking forever.

Diminishing returns with every play session because there is nothing new, exciting or rewarding to work towards so ultimately you're bored after just 10 minutes and that's that for Assassin's Creed Shadows.

Ubi needs to stop fucking around with these 100 hour games that add nothing new after the fifth hour. I haven't finished an Assassin's Creed game since Unity, but finished every single one before. No one is asking for these jumbo-sized experiences. The game would've sold just as much if the map was half the size with half the amount of quests.

This first screenshot looks like the Corrupted Monk Boss area in Sekiro

They used 10's of thousands of dollars worth of equipment to calibrate the TV. They are one of the best in the business especially in the city I live in. To your point though, the tv looked pretty damn incredible before calibration which makes me wonder if it was worth it. They did use a laptop and installed "luts" into the tv. Not sure I'm explaining it properly but I'm a graphics whore like most here. I just want games looking their best especially after all the money spent on the tv, receiver, cables, etc.

These tvs are ready to use. The insane calibration brings 97% color precision to 99%... which you can't see without measuring it.
It's your tv and your money. I know I would not allow anyone to touch my tv when all I need to do is change like 5 settings :P
But maybe I am wrong.

It can't hurt. If they installed luts INTO the tv, then it should also affect console.

So PSSR actually breaks the HDR in this game and introduces colour banding.
Still best implementation so far, but there had to be something 😂

I did one the other day where it kept giving me a choice of two paths to take. One loops back to the start and the other progresses on. But there is not clues as to which is the correct path. It feels like it was just designed to waste your time. No challenge to any of it either. It's only the second tomb I did and made me not want to do any more.
Yeah, one just pissed me off, I think I looped around the same 2 opposite paths like 4-5 times. The worst ones are for Yasuke where you need to throw the pots, he moves like a freighter and that's just not fun.

This is open world for you, all games have crap for the sake of having something extra to do.

Uninstalled it today to make room for Baldur's Gate 3. I had uninstalled it once before and honestly, I dont think I'll be coming back to it anytime soon

Too many little frustrations to keep going

The clunky parkour, the awkward stealth, the repetitive side content, it all just starts to pile up after a while. I enjoyed clearing the map and ticking off objectives, but the story? Total bore. I just cant be bothered to sit through any more flat dialogue or drawn out cutscenes that go nowhere

Is it just me or does this game look too foggy at times?

There are times the game is dead gorgeous, but others it gets a grey fest because there's too much fog ambience in it.

People who are not playing this because of Yasuke and Ubisoft are fools and are missing out.
This is not only a good game for those who like this open world stuff but… it's one of best looking games I've ever seen. It might straight up be the best looking games I've ever maybe not the animations that is. Especially not facial animations.

But oh my god. The environments, lighting, draw distance, the incredible views and details. 0 pop in. Nothing. And even smallest models are very detailed. It looks insane. I am 50 hours in and cannot believe how it looks. I've taken 2 gb of some of my best screenshots ever. And that hair?! Where tf have they take. This hair from.
It is truly wow factor. The sunset, fog, light going over the temple rooftops. Every scene. Every time of day, the incredible weather. Ubisoft deserves credit here. Only winter looks bad. Everything else is best in class.
I will post screenshots after I am done.

Game is good but. It great. Naoe is clearly the main character and imo should be the only playable one. Yasuke is a great character too but he would fit in a smaller ac game about him alone.

I rather agree but once I get into that state of mine for this type of game, hours go by. It's a good one of those I think. But yeah parkour is not the best in the series.

It's true. The fog looks amazing haha

Saying this, I'm not a major fan of AC, I like the franchise in general, but think Valhalla was way worse, hated the DLC, loved Origins and Odyssey, hated Odyseey DLC.

I don't know, I like it, in certain conditions looks amazing, like when the fog sets in or there's some blizzard.

Lol i literally say this to myself every other day, and every time im like settle down, best ever is too high a praise but there is just something about the visuals.

Winter looked meh until i progressed the story some more and went into other areas. I am telling you i legit thought i was playing the CG witcher 4 trailer. It was absolutely mind blowing. Perfect looking snow, gorgeous sky lighting, perfect textures and materials on yasuke's armor, i recorded some footage and took some gifs, and they did not do it justice. Some areas in winter do look meh, but some others look like the best visuals the game has to offer.

I think it's the RTGI. the light bouncing off the snow just looks right. For the longest time, ive hated how sunlight hits grass, snow and cement and just gets absorbed. Some games try to fake it like HFW and GT7 but they just look like they are trying too hard. Forza 8 got the tarmac light bounce just right. The Konami baseball game finally got the grass lighting correct. Especially in night time. And now AC shadows with the best looking snow ive seen. Just bright and vibrant completely changing the look of the game.

If the story was decent like the first 15 hours until you get to play as Yasuke then ok, id gladly give it an 8.5. But after yasuke's intro and flashbacks (which are GREAT btw) the grind of finding like 15 of those main masked templars is literally killing the game for me. i feel broken being forced to do 4 menial tasks before doing a main mission and killing some random no-name samurai with his own shitty side story that has fuck all to do with the plot. the fact that they repeat this 15 times is just plain bad writing. i want to find out who wrote this game just so i can write them a letter begging them to resign.

AC games did not used to be like this. AC1 was trash, but AC2's story was legit great. Brotherhood had great villains and some of the most poignant moments of the series. Even black flags which is a game about fucking pirates had a great cast of side characters you truly got to enjoy being around. this is so bland and boring my god, how does UBisoft hire these writers.

Yep. and the fact that the snow storms continue to change and get stronger as the game goes on. some of the snowstorms recently have completely destroyed visibility, added fog effects which maintaining what seems like thousands of snow particles visible on screen at once. its surprising how many different kinds of rain, snow and fog there are in this game.

Yeah, I'm with you on the repetitiveness of the game, but that's every open world game, all have bloat, grinding, repetitive side content, checklists etc. Then we should harshly judge every open world game, even Witcher 3, (not exactly comparing them, just as an idea) which is regarded as one of the best of all time had these things, even had trashy combat. Not one time I saw a game trashed for repetitive stuff and another praised or not, but getting a pass.

I'm like this, if the gameplay loop is good, then I'm fine with repetitive part, I mean the gameplay/combat here isn't trash, the AI is braindead yeah, but it's okay, there is variety, it's fun-ish, it isn't something groundbreaking.

Maybe it looks like it, but I'm really not defending this game, I hate the endless collection of weapons and armors, I hate that they still do the vantage point marking stuff on map thing and if that wasn't enough you can unlock points of interest in those safe houses and also with the random repetitive encounters, that's insane. Maybe I was a bit generous with a 8.5, but it's definitely better than Valhalla.
AC2 was amazing but the combat I didn't like, with how everyone stands around you waiting to die, I remember all the AC games up until Origins as "Counter" the game.

I agree about the first hours, it's great, and the Yasuke flashbacks, those felt like were created by another team. But I don't know how AC can get the story right, they sort of backed themselves into a corner with all the going back and forth in time, maybe a more self-contained, personal one, ditch a bit the open world, make it interconnected smaller areas, don't know.

Yes, all open world game have bloat and repetitive gameplay but the good ones like witcher 3 and ghost make up for it by having a great campaign with interesting story beats, characters and mission design.

I actually like the open world gameplay loop here. I love yasukes combat. I love exploring castles and I'm like 60 hours in. What i don't care for is the repetitive nature of the story missions where you go and hunt down the samurai templars target. They all play out the same. They don't have any interesting characters because they keep introducing new ones with every target. its all so boring i can't stand it.

I'm honestly aching to play a sony first party game right now. Call me woke but id rather play a game with a campaign written By competent writers featuring an actual plot and interesting characters. Something i can dissect or care enough to dissect. The world needs sony games. No one else has stepped up in nearly 2 years.

And done, well kinda, did all of the Acts and Epilogue, I was going to Platinum it, but I really cannot be bothered with the grinding of XP Levels enough so I'm happy where it is

As for the game, a solid 7/10, really long and Bloated, Yasuke added very little and you can tell he was added late, he was fun to play as though and story wise they really should've had him be a shadowy Creed member instead of a Samurai, but anyway after 80 hours I was done

What the fuck is a nit and why are they all of a sudden key to enjoying videogames

cause if you got them your head is itching like fuck while you trying to play. imagine getting the drop on someone in an online match and having to scratch your head. they'll kill you easy, you're fucked and gonna play terribly

I'm gonna tone down combat difficult one level and level the stealth difficulty at max.

Combat on expert level is so fucking damn spongy.

Also I think I might go with guaranteed assassination on this one. Stealth in this game is really good and forcing me to enter combat when I play in order to avoid it...nah.

I did this after a few hours, combat is too spongy otherwise and not fun

This is one of these games where you are crazy under leveled at the start but once you reach a certain threshold, your weapons reach a certain damage output and you unlock specific skills you can absolutely steamroll literally any enemy and combat becomes even more of a non-issue.

Combat was pretty iffy at the start and I had instances where I legit ran away from a Ronin if I encountered one but now I just curbstomp them all. Naoe's "auto-attack after parry" is insanely strong, especially once you also unlock the flurry parry attack.

Ubi's idea of higher diffculty is just make the health bars longer, which ultimately only makes the combat more tedious. Upping the difficulty doesn't make the combat more challenging, only more annoying.

Update is out. No idea on the feedback though.

How do you actually track objectives in this game?

I use the scouts but they are limited. Even using them marks a damn blue large area and I waste tons of time actually trying to find the objective.

Wth am I doing wrong?
