Assassin's Creed Syndicate Review Thread

AC:Unity is 19.99 at walmart is it worth picking up? Or should I wait for this to be 29.99 on black friday?

I was a fan of the contained story in Black Flag. But I hear Unity's story is kind of shit. SHould I pick that up, or wait for black friday and pick up Syndicate?

I'm a sucker for London, and gangs of New York vibe I'm getting from this game.

$20 is a good price point. Most of the major issues have been ironed out to make it at least fun. The co-op is actually better than it's given credit.

As down as I am on AC and open-world checklist collectathons in general, I still picked up Unity and Black Flag super cheap on a sale a few weeks ago and found some minor entertainment in them.

If you want to play Unity for the story, though, nah.

Yea, black flag I thought had a great self contained story. And I don't know if I'm in the minority but the whole Eden shit is fucking garbage story telling, and really should have nothing to do with the plot line of assassins creed. Wasn't really until AC2 they introduced that garbage story line that to me took me out of the story with Ezio.

Having what's her face show up when he comes in contact with apple of Eden or whatever it is is straight up fucking retarded.

Story should be about trying to uncover the past to help the future, and each one in different times and setting, templar vs. assassins.

That's all it needs.

Having all that future race bullshit seriously makes me not want to play it. It's why I enjoyed black flag so much there wasn't much up until the end about eden/artifact stuff. Everything else up to that point was about pirates dying out, and kenway's story arc.

Rant over.........

I still have way too many game sto play this fall, but I'm glad to see that this has gone from a begrudging "I guess I'll get this on sale so I can complete the collection" to a "hey, I'm stoked to play this!"

I literally own all the AC games because of sales and wanting to catch up because of black flags but only played 1 & 2. OPEN WORLD FATIGUE

I remain confused why some people seem to think a 78 on Metacritic is a ridiculously high, bought off score.

That's got to be one of the worst scores for a major game this year and many of the complaints are that it's suspiciously high.

Because it's Assassin's Creed and even that is considered an unacceptable score to some. Anyway, it seems the consensus is that it is quite solid, which is great to see.

I haven't played an AC game since revelations but I'm a sucker for games set in Victorian london and this wide range of reviews isn't super helpful. I also wonder how much MGSV has affected open world game expectations. If this game has the same boring static open world that every other AC game has I'm kinda not interested.
MGSV didn't have that good of an open world though.

People would rather see it sub 50 I guess.

It is strange, it's not like any of the other games have reviewed much worse

I just can't trust these reviews. Think the series is dead to me.

:(

I'm in a similar spot. I really wanted this to be a comeback, but it seems it's just more of the same.

How many times have we heard this same story? There's a corrupt/evil group, lead by some evil villain, and you're going to train up to kill him, with some historic nostalgia thrown in along the way.

And sure, some of the games have had some twists. But is being an Assassin really just about fending off corruption? Is that really the only story this franchise has to tell?

That's what happens when confirmation bias doesn't come to pass.

I'd grab it the game is undeniably beautiful and has a great sense of scale, the story and characters are complete trash but ehh.

Arno(main character) is a personality void and his love interest is a moron, they range between bland and annoying over the course of the story.

As much crap as the first game got, it was the only one where I truly felt like an assassin. 2 pretty much improved things, but we kept getting the order of assassins thing and each game seems to keep the same idea.
My perfect game would be one where you take no sides and can choose your own path.

Also 4 I liked because it was pirate simulator. The assassin part was a bit weak.

I dunno guys, I'm just looking at gameplay videos and while London looks fine, the game just looks like another assassins creed game which for some isn't a bad thing for some people.

For me, I think they need to make a new engine, this year a bunch of games like Witcher 3, MGSV, Bloodborne and even Undertale kind of innovated in a lot of ways with good game design to set them apart from others. Syndicate looks clunky and samey to me.

The last one I enjoyed was Black Flag and that's because of the pirate stuff. Can't they just make a pirate IP where you sail seas and fight other pirate factions and mythical water beasts? That would get me interested.

me, i just wish some of the more positive reviewers had cut mad max as much slack as they have this game :) ...

Wouldn't this make more sense if you play Syndicate first, to see if the criticisms leveled against Mad Max apply here too? Believe it or not, they're two different games :)

What are you talking abuot the entire game was about Edward spending like 20 years to find the observatory so he can use its power to gain untold riches

The narrative in the series is always more focused on character arc rather than the plot.

The ordering of the reviews in the OP means you get presented by an array of 90s, which maybe gives the impression of a positive consensus that doesn't really exist?

FF does reviews of games...? Didn't know that.

It's the first one. Just watched it, as you might expect it mostly discusses the game's representational aspects, but that's a refreshing change from formulaic game reviews that basically read like boilerplate these days.

Even with the positive reviews....the overall look of the game is not sitting right with me. Looks very bland and last gen with the lack of color. Its too grey and brown.

I think people wanted Assassins Creed to kinda get back to basics and refine some of the stuff that's been present but lacking in other games. Sounds like this does that. Also besides Undertale none of the games you listed have any real innovation.

I'm not even touching this AC until it's on sale. I preordered Unity and was bitterly disappointed by the mangled mess that arrived. Performance was terrible on a rig that handles things wonderfuly most of the time. Bugs all over the place, a plot that made no sense in places, poorly developed characters, microtransactions and app interaction out the wazoo....just a poor show.

Maybe one day AC will recapture that AC2/Brotherhood/AC4 magic....but I doubt it.

You know, overall I have enjoyed what I played of this series.

But I haven't played one all the way through since 2. I have played some of the others here and there. Honestly the convoluted plot between the Assassin's/Templars and all the future stuff just became too much to follow.

My question is: do loyal fans of this series care? Do you try to follow that plot thread or just ignore it all? I'm a bit OCD so I almost feel as if I would be missing out on something if I just jump into this after skipping so many entries.

I'm actually kind of excited to play this now. I love when games go from sounding like guaranteed disappointments to being pleasant surprises.

It's weird that there are people who seem to just want some games to be shitty. More good games = a good thing.

Sorry, innovation was the wrong word to use even though Underrale does have some of that. Those three other games improve on what made those franchises great like a bigger world it multiple endings, better stealth and more options to take out your enemy and faster paced combat and parrying with a gun.

78 on Metacritic.

Better than I thought honestly, but still not high enough for me to give a shit. Maybe if this were the middle of the summer drought, but not with so many games about to come out.

I think people are tired of games that aren't just the same old shit, but the same old buggy shit, not getting the beat-down they believe they deserve. I guess they're pissed a game of this sort will sell millions regardless. At a glance 78 doesn't seem that bad.

As far as I'm concerned video game scoring is just broken anyway. Eights and such are given away so easily, and it's reflected on how Metacritic handles the descriptors. A game needs a 90+ score to garner "Critical acclaim", whereas a movie will get that with an 80. "Game reviewing" is just too much of an enthusiast, fanboy-oriented business, even among big sites or well-known people.

What are you talking abuot the entire game was about Edward spending like 20 years to find the observatory so he can use its power to gain untold riches

We obviously played different games. His original goal was to get rich to get back to his wife. As the story went on and people were dying around him, he understood that the life he lead was not one he wanted for his kid, or something that he didn't want to be known for from his children.

Which is why by the end of the game he wasn't obsessed with getting rich.

Over the next few years, Edward struggled with the internal conflict that arose from his desire for fame and riches - through finding the Observatory - and his duty to his friends. After losing nearly all of his closest friends, he realized the folly of his quest for glory. He then joined the Assassin Order, hunted down the Templars in the region and entrusted the Observatory to the Assassins.

After a decade in the West Indies, Edward returned to Britain and received a pardon from Robert Walpole. He soon acquired an estate in London and married Tessa Stephenson-Oakley, with whom he fathered a son named Haytham. Continuing his work as an Assassin, Edward researched the First Civilization, and kept the research in a journal. In 1735, he was killed by mercenaries in the employ of Templar Grand Master Reginald Birch, in order to acquire the journal. Haytham would later father Ratonhnhaké:ton; through this line, Edward is an ancestor of William Miles, and his son, Desmond.

That's from the wiki, and I remember the ending of black flag since i played it twice.

So like I said the game was about his character arc, and it's one that I thought like Ezio's had a great end to it.

I'm glad to hear that this is an improvement over Unity. I was down on the series after last year but I might pick this up now.

It sucks that reviewers are so negative these days and waiting for the first occasion to bash a game. I hope reviews become good again one day.
