You should try it
For nearly the past 20 years, if I was asked who my favorite dev is, Obsidian would be brought up. I’m already down bad this month man, I don’t know if I can take another hit. Waterproofing in my finished basement failed, car died, I can’t give Obsidian’s eulogy this month too. It’s one thing to know a loved one is dead, it’s another thing to start taking apart and playing with the corpse. Someday I’ll check it out for sure.

Damn.....sorry you are having a rough month my man. Hope it turns around for you.

Does it?

Did it leverage Starfield to a masterpiece?

Witcher 3, Mass Effect, don't have those details. BG3 is more cRPG approach but still lack plenty of those details. KCD is again, sometimes very immersive with AI behavior but you enter a house and everything is static too. Loot systems by searching around to see when a prompt to look/steal something pops up without fuckall visual cues.

Barely any RPGs actually do what creation engine does. So let's cut the bullcrap. Elder Scrolls 6 will be trolled for almost those same reasons. "wow, look at the jank? Creation engine in 202x? TROLOLOLOL. Who cares about physics? Why does it matter if I can pick 10,000 cheeses/potatoes and stock them in a room?"

Now I enjoy all sorts of RPGs. Bethesda has their very specific feel to them and that's fine. But they're really the only ones doing that.
Details add a lot to the game though. Just touching the wall slightly and getting a realistic scratch on my car door in gta 5 still tingles my bones. They aren't the make all, do all but they are a massive selling point. Not to mention how much it adds to immersion. Lack of reaction can break immersion which, imo, is fatal for rpg.

Sure you might not notice an arrow not falling when you shoot it in the sky, but you do notice that no npc moves around. You do notice the lack of ripples when you go into the water or objects/npc not reacting at all when you hit them. This are all things games like witcher 3 had.

Also, funny you are comparing it to starfield which has a better metacritic score and sold way better than this game.

Dont know if this kind of videos are fair , but always surprise me 2025 games like Avowed lack of those details. Maybe is budget, time , lazy developer. Those details add inmerssion especially on an RPG.
I don’t think it’s about being lazy, there are almost no games at all that does what Skyrim does. Physics on every object and npcs almost having a life is super rare.

Anyway this whole thing reminds me about Horizon Zero Dawn vs Zelda BOTW. Disappointing but not game breaking.

You could not kill civilians in witcher 3. Whole citadel station in mass effect is static NPCs. Remember Horizon Zero dawn physics compared to Zelda BOTW? Sure details are nice but it does not make or break the core game. If the core game is good, then they are nice adders. If the core game is bad, then these adders don't elevate the game to good.

Also, funny you are comparing it to starfield which has a better metacritic score and sold way better than this game.

Funny? Starfield was awaited as THE game of the generation and ended up being one of my most disappointing game after putting nearly a hundred hours in and finishing it. I'm enjoying a shit load more Avowed than Starfield. Metacritic and sales I don't give a shit, I judge what I play. You could try that sometimes. Its as if you judge music quality by who is #1 on billboards, like really? I have a mile long list of RPGs that were commercial flops that are worth more your time than Starfield.

Prey has shit metacritic and is one of the best immersive sim of the decade.

Hmm, I do somewhat agree with your point but also I guess I didn't properly convey mine. I am not talking about details like deccan( from days gone) pupils reacting to sunlight and realistically getting smaller or bigger, no. That is stupid details that is not really noticeable. I am talking about details that are, for example going into water and only the clothes that touch the water becoming wet. Does it break the game? No, but it does break immersion for me. Also it depends on the type of game, for me personally, for example, I don't care that the car damage is superficial in gt7 because it isn't that type of game yet I hate that planet coaster doesn't allow you to kill your customers( I fluenced by rollar coaster tycoon games of old wherein you can turn guests into red mist). As someone who eventually plans to play avowed, NPCs just standing around and not moving especially in massive cities would be highly noticeable and immersion breaking for me and I get why people are bothered by it.

It's the fault of the people who overhyped it. Lol, you judge what you play but at the same time people are also allowed to judge by what they play. Just because you liked a game doesn't mean people aren't allowed to dislike it. Yeah, sales and metacritic don't give the complete picture but they do reveal the general sentiment because otherwise all we have is he says/she says. Games are subjective and no one is going to like every game. And lack of basic things in avowed when it comes immersion is and can be a massive talking point and negative for people.

Alright it's the start of the weekends but it's still early so folks are at school and work. Give it a few more hours and we should see Avowed getting the number it desperately needs! Should be 90k this evening with a increase to 100k on saturday tomorrow and over 100k on Sunday's high peak. It will not stay at 15k to 17k since that number is bad even for games that released on Steam 1 year later when it lost the momentum. Avowed is a steam launch game when the momentum is still at a all time high so it's going to get way above 40k, 30k and be more like 90k, 100k which I predict will happen starting later tonight!

FFVII Rebirth, FFXVI, Spiderman 2, Stellar Blade etc can afford to be on the 40k, 30k ccp because they were released way after launch when the hype and momentum were gone already. But not Avowed which is like the other AA games Stalker 2 and Granblue Fantasy Relink etc that reached 100k + ccp since they were launch titles. Which means it will get those numbers this weekday! Cheers for Avowed!

Or it won't 🤷‍♂️

STALKER fans waited F-I-F-T-E-E-N years for a sequel. To say it was anticipated is an understatement. In a month where... I'm trying to remember what released around that time... Lego Horizon?

This is a new franchise. In a packed month.

Old Obsidian CCUs, with only Pentiment and Grounded that would really have a gamepass effect?

Pentiment 1.25k
Grounded 32k
Outer worlds 20.3k
Pillars of Eternity 2 deadfire 22.7k
Tyranny 15.8k
Pillars of Eternity 41.9k
South park stick of truth 34.8k
Fallout New vegas 51k
Alpha protocol 2.4k
KOTOR 2 6.6k
i do wonder how u fcking old ppl simp for corporations ? MS doesnt care u nor Jizz Corden :p

For what, stating Obsidian's previous CCUs?

I critiqued the fuck out of Starfield and I'm a PC gamer. I don't care for plastic boxes. They're all 3rd parties to me.

There's games from both "camps" (what a cringe thing) in my library and some I love some I don't on both sides.

Obsidian being caught in the middle of console warring when if they had been independent it would have not make any waves is pretty telling about the state of "young" idiots running around trying to stir shit.

But "parkour, bro"! Didn't you know, this game shits on The Witcher because you can jump around on ledges! You know the game is a shitty RPG when that's the main attraction. The funny part is if you ran a poll of RPG players for the last 30 years and asked them what they want in an RPG, none of them would list parkour in their top 20. Not one. Now it's a selling point?

You don't even have to compare this game to Skyrim. It feels dead to nearly every RPG, and it's Obsidian, which means people were expecting an immersive RPG, not Doom Medieval Edition. If I'm sitting in the middle of the forest in Avowed, it feels like a movie set. The cities literally feel unfinished. It's half a video game. It's literally the first time I've ever thought, "that's a Gamepass ass game".

The developers fucked this game up, and their sales, because they learned the wrong lesson from PoE 2 bombing. PoE2 didn't bomb because it was a bad game, it bombed because the graphical style literally destroys the maximum amount of people who will even engage with your game. If Deadfire looked like BG3 it would would be sold significantly better and been even higher rated. Imagine PoE 3 with Avowed's graphics. Literal GotY type shit that would have sold like gangbusters. Instead we got babies first RPG with "parkour" from fucking Obsidian entertainment. Like, what?

What happened?! Did senior devs leave after MS´s acquisition? Did the DEI team make Avowed while the real team is making The Outer Worlds 2
🤷‍♂️ craziness

The best part about this video is that TOW was widely panned after release for being Fallout Lite edition and lacking compared to the competition, so the fact that Avowed is even more trimmed means you don't even have to compare it to Skyrim to see it's faults, you can literally just compare it to Obsidians last game.

There might be even some birthdays being celebrated with their cool new game.

Looks to me like all that stuff could have been included but the powers that be at Microsoft are more interested in getting the game out the door than including stuff like this.

I know some don't like to hear it, but when folks say "good enough for Game Pass" then this is what they are talking about.

The words are haunting.

"as close to AAA as possible"

Hell, there are many Indies and AAA games with more attention to detail now.

i know we like to blame publishers when games don't turn out how we would like, but i feel Obsidian deserve most if not all the blame. Bloomberg just published an article and it turns out Avowed was in dev for 6 years and had two rebooted.

I'm enjoying the game, but I understand the feelings here. BioWare, Insomniac and Remedy are all crap now for me. I've never played Obsidian games for the things people seem to want in Avowed, though.

That doesn't go along with Obsidian saying they had a long polishing phase, though. That means they chose to polish the game over improving the game.

I mean if Outer Worlds 2 is a downgrade then we can start saying that they want game out the door without including stuff like this but Avowed is its own thing. A decision was taken during development, after reboots and directors hitting walls, to not go in that direction.

Yeah, but the end result is a lesser game and that's what people are pointing to. It is legit criticism. And I say that while still thoroughly enjoying the game myself. We can have diverse thoughts about this.

Nah, Obsidian has said in the recent past that they want to make smaller games. I'm assuming the majority of their resources are being directed towards TOW2, as it was a big success back in 2020. Avowed was developed by Obsidian's "B" team.

I wish Obsidian just focused on one AAA project at a time. I'd rather have one fantastic game than 2 good games. The studio heads don't want that tho

Think what you are saying would be more understandable if this were not a $70 game. AAA prices gets AAA expectations.

I'd rather have one amazing game than two good ones as well.

The more I think about it, the more this game all makes sense after the Bloomberg article. I'm guessing the environmental art was finished largely in the Skyrim phase, the character designs, level designs, combat and lighter tone in the Borderlands phase, and then this stuff all got mashed together in the final development phase.
