GT3

But a solid shout out to 1nsane, one of the first online multiplayer games I ever played - great community too, tons of mods.

Wow, that's a lot of racing games!

GT3 gets my vote. The jump from GT2 to this totally blew my mind, and I loved the replay filters.

When did NeoGAF turn into list wars? I keep seeing these "best of 19xx/20xx" threads and I check to make sure I am not on WatchMojo.

I havent' played anywhere near enough of these to make a real call, but of what I've played it's either Daytona or Project Gotham.

My heart says Daytona, my brain says PGR so....

Project Gotham Racing.

Gran Turismo 3

Gotta be Gran Turismo 3.

Gran Turismo 3.

Gran Turismo 3

Gran Turismo 3 hands down

Gran Turismo 3 A-Spec.

I expect this to be unanimous

Gran Turismo 3 is the greatest racing game of all time, full stop.

GT3.

They're all by the same guy, too. I'm not sure what point he's trying to make here. Spreading awareness of all the good games of a given genre in a given year? That'd be a noble endeavor, of course, but then turning it into a voting slugfest kind of undermines it. It all seems oddly and arbitrarily specific, too, limiting it to a seemingly random year.

I don't understand this. Obviously if the mods are cool with it, I'm not gonna say the threads shouldn't exist, but it feels like it could be better handled in a myriad of ways...

For me, Wave Race: Blue Storm, no question. I love me some physics-based water.

GT3 is going to run away with this, though, obviously.

Simply not engaging with a thread that doesn´t hold up to you standards > backseat moderating.

I love Burnout, the second one was even better.

The racing games on that gen and the previous one were the best for me.

TXR0. I liked how they gave each racer a little back story. And the nicknames you would be awarded based on your style of play were hilarious.

Gran Turismo 3 A-Spec by a landslide.

Honourable mention to GT Advance on GBA, amazing handheld title.

I was going to say; objectively GT3 (but for me Simpsons, loved that game).

However then scrolled down to Konami Krazy Racers, loved that game.

Did MSR and PGR really come out in the same year?

I'll vote for MSR, the wait for it was painful and the game was a little broken but I had a lot of fun with it.

Hands down PGR. I'd say Metropolis Street Racer but that is a 2000 game (as a fanatic of that game, I was absolutely living in my first apartment at the time and would wake up at 5AM to play routes in Tokyo.)

It was this Gran Turismo where I noticed less "simulation" and more "arcade and style" where cars felt like blocks of ice, so I stopped playing. Granted, it was more sim than PGR, but PGR didn't masquerade as anything it wasn't. Just buttery smooth upscale of MSR (though I'm STILL pissed no other game has done real time day/night for locale you are racing. So cool!)

Honorable mention for me: Extreme G Racing on Gamecube. Man that game was surprisingly rad!

OK this is enough of these at once, OP.
I dunno... I think these are kinda fun, and highlight how many various games (and how many GOOD games) there were just in one genre during a particular year. At least these are focused vs. the annoying "just bought [x], recommend me some good games!" threads.

Gran Turismo is the best racing game.

SSX Tricky is in the selection as well and is the best and most fun game of the bunch, but I wouldn't consider it a racing game. Burnout is also a great game and was quite difficult. Subsequent entries of Burnout were even better though, Burnout 2 or 3 might give GT a run for best racer of the PS2 generation.
