Best Racing game of 2001? Vote Inside!

PGR. The radio stations and the amazingly smooth, locked 60fps was epic as shit. I still have a vivid memory of a replay around Shinjuku (I think) with a blue Testarossa and how alive it looks with the camera shake and car movement.

Project Gotham Racing, absolutely no contest.

GT3 was too gutted out from GT2. GT4 is where it picked back up and PGR is just an absolute legend of a game making it the clear winner.
I like the way you think. Would love to pick it up again, but unfortunately that means having that behemoth hooked up to my TV again.

I don't know if I consider it a racing game but since it's there, SSX Tricky.

Racing sims are a chore to play, and the kart racers on this list aren't the best

Ssx tricky was some of the most fun I've had in a video game. So that.

Wish I had an xbox back then so I could've played the pgr series, they always looked great to me. Gt3 was good, but I preferred gt4 as it felt more complete.

Holy shit.

Gran Turismo 3
Mario Kart Super Circuit
Wave Race
F-Zero Maximum Velocity
Burnout
...

Gotta go with Gran Turismo 3 back in the day.

However, Mario Kart Super Circuit, F-Zero Maximum Velocity, and Wave Race hold up better today.

So many damn good games. My vote is for PGR since i never played GT3.

SSX Tricky, Wave Race Blue Storm and F-Zero were amazing and XG3 was pretty good. Loved Burnout but it didn't get really good until 3 and then peaked at Burnout Revenge which to me is the most fun racing game i've ever played with nothing coming even close.

Krazy racers had an amazing soundtrack, i'm voting for it. Easily my favorite karting game until mario kart 8 came out. You could even play as the Ninja from mgs, you don't see a game like that every day.

Here are a few standout songs from it.

Jesus Christ!!!!

PGR and Metropolis Street Racer came out the same year?!

Impossible to choose! Ugh

Loved GT3, but I never went back o it after buying MSR.

I guess put me in for PGR, but I sure want MSR to win (not going to happen :( )

Going to put up a lonely vote for XGIII. By far the fastest video game I've ever played, more so than any Sonic or even F-Zero GX. A bit underrated too, it seems.

Ah, okay. I don't think I ever played PGR 1 on BC, only on the original hardware.

I have played PGR 2 on BC however, and I think I need to start another playthrough at some point.
I tried that too... and I remember the menus all being blacked out for some reason. Very annoying :/

Gran Turismo 3 and Project Gotham are the obvious choices, and they fit into the "sim" and "arcade" styles neatly, to boot.

SSX Tricky is great too, but I don't think of that as a racing game.

That is a tough choice indeed. Amazing year for racing games.

I'll go with Burnout.

People always seem to say the series didn't really "get going" until Burnout 3 but I love the sheer amount of traffic in the first game and tough to reach checkpoints. I was disappointed with later games having less and less traffic. Burnout 2 struck a good balance though.

Do you know what I love the most about this list? It's the sheer variety of racing games released in that year. You just don't see that any more, which is a crying shame.

Out of all those, I probably played Wave Race Blue Storm the most so i'll go with that.
