Wow just briefly going through Dan's recent twitter history, I can't help but be reminded of the Chris Cooper character in American Beauty.

I mean it's totally cool that he dislikes, no absolutely despises the game, but I mean he really is trying to jam his feelings about the game down the throats of all of his followers.

He did a similar thing with Bayonetta 2. It drives him nuts when a game he doesn't like gets pretty much universal acclaim.

Shit, even in the 90's I used a Gravis Gamepad for some PC games... Weird.

Gameport represent!
God the gravis pad was terrible :p

As a lifelong PC gamer that has only relatively recently gotten into console gaming, I really don't get the vehement hatred some PC gamers have over anything related to consoles. Some games do in fact control better with a gamepad than KBAM, there's room for both in this world.

I think Dan would have enjoyed the game more if he understood shortcuts. You don't need to go through the entire level to get back to CB. Hell, you can probably run past the ogre in front of the fog gate and only have to kill a couple of mooks.

Yeah, that guy will totally let you slide. None of the enemies on the bridge sans the wolves (which are easily bypassed) are fast enough to catch you.

It's crazy how people don't explore and find the shortcuts... It takes 30 seconds to get to the boss once you do. And even without the shortcut... This morning I was watching a terrible player who was just running past anything. He easily made it all the way to Cleric Beast in like a minute without taking any damage. He got crushed by the boss, of course.

If you are struggling with a Souls game, it really helps to watch a few minutes of a walk through by a skilled player. I think most new players will quickly have a "Oh, you can play the game like that?" moment and be able to adapt with their own play-style.

Yeah I think this is more indicative of the current generation of gamers that are either super complacent after years of easy games or never picked up the habits of trial and error, instead having been bombarded with trial and reward constantly.

It's pretty annoying though to see people complain about stuff that is entirely their fault, yet the game(s) get a bad rap for it or misinformation spread. And in general there just seem to be a lot of bad gamers these days haha.

I don't have a problem with people that don't like the game, but the Stapleton shenanigans are too much. Like someone else posted, he is supposed to be a professional, not some clown on a blog.

I am, however, looking forward to the Angry Joe review. Given his track record, I expect him not to like the game very much. His rant should be glorious, though I secretly hope he "gets it" instead ;-)

You don't have to kill anything. I posted a YouTube run-through in one of the other threads when I beat Cleric Beast yesterday, I just ran past everything from the starting lantern straight to the fog gate. Takes around 28 seconds.

Wait, when is IGN going to complete their review?

Someone mentioned earlier that they were only halfway through the game when their review in progress went up. That's without taking into account online functionality. So they had a lot more that they needed to cover.

i didn't watch his stream but i heard it didn't go well, haha

Yeah...it was honestly disheartening to see, it wasn't even so much the game(well not as much), but his dumbass twitch followers freaking out about the game every time he got lost or didn't know what to do.

He was already getting somewhat frustrated by the game(at one point he even said it was worse than fable 3 because there was nothing ever in the barrels or boxes when he smashed them although i think he was joking about that), but he was retaining control for the most par.

But then the insults started flying about how he sucked at the game and personal insults, and then he struck back about how the Souls community was the worst of all time, it was just a mess and i don't think they even really finished it. Other joe was specifically there to calm him down but it didn't really work out

I'd disagree. I think a better approach when you're struggling is to stop for a second and assess what's happening. I was doing the same thing with the Cleric Beast(thinking the run to him was far too long). I stopped and thought about it and realised hat there HAD to be a shorter way to him. Next run to the bridge I didn't go to him and instead went in the house I'd found earlier but hadn't explored. Sure enough, shortcut. It's relly obvious with all the locked gates everywhere that they're for shortcuts of some kind.

For someone who professes his love for exploring, this Dan Stapleton guy didn't seem to do whole lot of it.

A lot of us don't have a lot of hours to play games. For example, if I'm lucky, I get about 2 hours a week to play. Bloodborne, therefore, is an extremely frustrating game for me, because it requires you to spend so much time trying out things, a lot of which you forget if you come back after some time. I really regret buying it, because it is a game that, at least from my POV, can only enjoyed be in long stretches.

It's an RPG from a developer with a well-known track record. I mean, did you expect something straightforward and linear?

sound like your lifestyle is the problem not Bloodborne :)

agree. anyone doing 15-30 minutes worth of checking out the soul series (which i'd think anyone considering buying bloodborne might do) should walk away knowing close to all you need to know - it's certainly no secret ('prepare to die!')...

anyone experiencing buyer's remorse really only have themselves to blame, because all the 'hype' in the world doesn't magically convert a game you'd ordinarily realize isn't for you into one that suddenly is (which, btw, is the reason i haven't gotten gtav :) )...

Not to sound like a jerk, but if you really only have 2 hours a week to play games, then the souls series/bloodborne is definitely not for you.

There are plenty of other games out there which are far more forgiving and accommodating to your busy lifestyle.

Since its release, I've been asked how Bloodborne measures up to the Souls games, and really, I think I need a little more perspective before I can fully weigh in on this issue. Even so, Bloodborne's various simplifications make for a meaningfully different experience, and while I certainly haven't tired of Souls games, it's been a lot of fun to see this same philosophy funneled through a different context. FromSoftware's had an amazing track record of late—it seems like they've given us non-stop content over the past year—and, thankfully, Bloodborne doesn't stand as their first major slip-up. It's definitely an experience in need of optimization, but also an incredibly memorable one that stands as the strongest console-exclusive game in years. If you want to see the future of RPGs, it all begins with Bloodborne.

Didn't really wanna go read that IGN article...but can anyone tell me if Dan Stapleton got past the Cleric Beast? If so...did he mention how far he got?

The thread is about reviews, not articles about people who played it.

Mods have already said this is not the place for that discussion.

I get it, not bashing the guy. Everyone has their opinion. Was just wondering what his "review" or impressions of the game are based on how far he made it.

Based on his trial run of The Evil Within last year, he'll probably get frustrated and give up after like an hour. He's not very good at games, but I still like his reviews.

He seems to go into games with a lot of confidence, like he knows exactly how to play the game before it even starts, then gets upset when it doesn't go his way. He has very little patience.

He loved Alien Isolation, which requires more patience than any other game I have played.

One of the dumbest subjects I've heard in regards to a game. Someone trying to review a game, calling it overrated without playing it because they saw enough videos on it make a judgement. It's also exactly like a car everyone, because good cars you can tell how they are because of how they look and drive when you see someone else. It's the same thing!

He's good enough at specific genres, like shooters, WRPG, and strategy games. Patience doesn't seem to be the problem despite his personality.

Yeah but it's mostly a "hide-and-seek" sort of game, so in that sense it's pretty straight forward.

(Also, I feel part of his love for Isolation is mostly due to his overall love for the Aliens franchise)

It's really not a hide and seek game at all, hiding in Alien is a last resort. You have to constantly keep moving and watch your surroundings and there is a fair amount of combat as well. And there is nothing straightforward about it, it requires skill, forward thinking and a LOT of patience to advance in the game. Also the game is so well designed it's deserving of praise on it's own merit, not just because of it's attachment to Alien (which it obviously nails)

One of the worst rants I've heard. Asking why Bloodborne gets high scores for it's high difficulty but not Knack which was viewed the same way. Awful.

Your correct in it been awful. My 11 year old can complete Knack. Its not that hard of a game. There is no way he could complete Bloodborne.

The guy also complained about Bloodborne having a higher metacritic score (93 with 50 reviews so far), than Ninja Gaiden (91 with 89 reviews). A whole 2 points higher, where more reviews could arrive and lower the score by way of averages. It's a terrible argument. Gaming industry is in trouble alright, and it's to do with how people perceive metacritic scores like this.

I'm assuming the IGN article bashing Bloodborne has already been discussed to death?

I accidentally visited IGN earlier to check and see if they finished their review of the game yet, and that was the article highlighted in the navigation bar. Whose idea was it to bash a game before the review's even finished? I know it's not the same guy who's writing the review, but it seems like a terrible click-bait idea.

It's a casual gamer complaining about Bloodborne not being more casual-friendly, and to me that seems more like a piece he should have posted on his blog rather than something making the front page of IGN with 14k replies.

If people like him had his way, I wouldn't be enjoying the game so much.

Am I missing something...IGN was able to make a full walk through for the game but still couldn't finish a review?
I assume you're referring to the Wiki?

That's community-driven, and they also have several freelancers add content to their guides.

The real question you should be asking is why IGN got their review copy late, yet they were the ones providing full exclusive coverage for the game before its release.

The weird thing is, if half of what he says about the other games he enjoys is true, especially that about playing X-COM on classic/ironman with Long War installed, he's clearly not "casual" or averse to difficulty. X-COM is actually a lot "cheaper" than Bloodborne, at least as far as the RNG is concerned (not sure if Long War addressed that). So what is it about BB that inspired him to drag it through the mud?

I think it's the same thing that leads calmer heads to eject the disc and sleep on it - he got frustrated and chose a poor way to express it. I have every suspicion that he's going to pick the game back up, go through these fits after every other boss, and maybe even complete the game some day. Honestly I think it's something about a game receiving glowing, universal praise that's leading some people to act like buffoons in an effort to discredit it when normally they'd just ignore games they don't like.

Eurogamer:
Imaginative, powerful and coherent, Bloodborne is genius.
Essential

The fact is that few other studios in the world can match what From Software is doing in big-budget games. Director Hidetaka Miyazaki is possessed of a rare talent, an all-encompassing design sensibility capable of tying everything that matters - aesthetics, narrative, sound and mechanical design - together in a manner where each feeds into and enhances the others. The structure underlying Bloodborne is not just original but coherent, and because of this the impact of everything it does is commensurately greater. This is total design. It feels wonderful to have a world like this and, over a week of solid play later, feel that there's so much more to discover. And it's awful to know that, in all likelihood, it will be a painfully long time until I play anything else that matches up to Bloodborne's breadth of vision, generosity of content, and - yes - genius.
