So for those of you that got the game, what's your impression so far? I tend not to follow too many reviewers as I have broad tastes in games. I loved VC and I've been playing X-COM since the original DOS versions. Good? Bad? Meh? Even "meh" might still be exciting.

I'm only through the first mission which is... 4 maps (not counting the tutorial maps)? I really like it so far. I don't know that I'd put it up there with XCom or VC since the type of strategy employed is a little different. For example, one of the first characters you get has a grenade launcher that makes the enemy move after they're hit depending on the point of impact. It's almost like a stealth game mixed with a TBS game because where the enemy is initially looking and the speed at which you move play factors on whether or not you get spotted. Definitely worth the purchase imo.

Honestly, the more I think about it, the enemy turn phase isn't really longer than any other TBS game. It just feels that way because of the relatively static cameras you have to choose from (ie - your squad). Scenes in action movies seem a lot more fast paced because there are a lot of cuts. There are virtually no camera cuts in this game so it feels like it takes longer even though it doesn't.

Phew, did MUCH better on 1-3 compared to the demo. Plus got all of #1's cogs so far.

Does getting new ranks unlock anything, like new stuff you can unlock, upgrades, & such?

Having a good time with the game as of the intro chapters so far.

I don't mind the delays so much but I can see them really getting annoying later on, this will be a good break from MH4U for a bit. I just wish it had been polished up a bit more, would have been a stellar game all in all.

Hope it sells well enough for IntSys/Nintendo to give us a STEAM 2.

Cogs unlock better steam tanks.
Looks like coins unlock more subweapons as well. Wonder when you're able to change them out.

Edit: Oh I see, tap the weapon name to switch between them. Can you equip different ones later on, or will they just be more powerful versions of existing weapons?

Mission 2 completed. I feel like this was a bit more tolerable than Mission 1 because now all your characters have Overwatch, you gain a third character, and you have sub-weapons now, one of which can heal others (but not yourself). Plus now I know if a stage will probably have resurrecting enemies due to big blue ant-hills.

I read somewhere on Miiverse that apparently you can press select once per enemy, and it'll speed up each respective enemy's movement, which results in a greater speedup than just pressing it once...

Now we just need someone trustworthy to properly test this.

The hard rock music in this game reminds me of AW: Days of Ruin music -

Is it the same composer?

Come on, I wrote the FAQ for a reason.

This has probably already been mentioned, but I figured I'd mention it too just in case: If you or anyone you know preordered the game from GameStop and you want the Majora's Mask pin, get it as soon as possible. Apparently Nintendo shipped way less pins than there were preorders, so not everyone who preordered is getting one.

That's been a trend with Nintendo as of late....

Yup, I was joking about it with the GameStop associate today and he was just dreading all the pissed off fans that were gonna complain when they found out they weren't getting one. It seems like it's pretty bad, since he said they only got about 10 pins which was half the amount of preorders they had.

It's strange how they only now decide to cast Marth with an English voice. So weird hearing him speak Japanese in Smash while Robin, Ike and Lucina are English.

Haven't gotten the game yet, but a rather underwhelming performance for so many big names based on the trailers and demo.

Subscribed to this! I got my copy in the mail but am a bit wary to keep it or not. The only aspect of the reviews that has swayed me is the long enemy turns. That sounds painful. Anxious to hear some Gaffer impresisons!

they're not wrong, but is it really worth passing on a great game because of one minor non-gameplay related annoyance? i think not!

So I picked up my copy of the game and pin today... I'm really enjoying it so far, especially the writing! All the folks at Treehouse who worked on this get a big "Bravo!" from me! Anyways, as far as the actual game goes, I just got past the part where I saved the Queen, which I thought was relatively decent as far as escort missions go, due to the strategies that it encouraged... Also, I'm realizing I missed the livestream thing that was supposed to be on Twitch earlier today; did anyone record it and put it up on Youtube yet?

Is it worth playing the demo before starting the game up? What gets carried over?
Medals/coins that're used to heal you/restore all your steam & your overall total which is used to unlock more sub-weapons (not sure if it counts coins from demo, need confirmation).

When you reach a save point, it costs 10 to restore health & steam for one character or 100 for all characters, then the 2nd time, 20 & 200, then third is 30 & 300, & so forth.

Wow, Polygon gave it a 3.5

THERE'S NO OVERHEAD VIEW, NO MAP, NO NOTHING

So, there's my deep dark secret, I didn't finish Code Name STEAM. Sneer all you want, but the credit scroll would literally have to include a treasure map to a working jetpack before I'd consider finishing this brutally misguided, horrifically dull debacle.

Polygon strikes (or misses) again.

With that said I love how divisive the reviews are! As someone mentioned, this game has 'hidden gem' and 'cult classic' written all over it!

There's no overhead view, no map, no nothing, it's solely dependent on what you can see from each of your teammates' perspectives. Lose track of where the goal is and you could spend turn upon turn ambling around looking for it. At one point, infuriatingly, the goal was hidden behind an enemy.
[...]
When Code Name STEAM isn't boring, it's often just annoying. There are nearly impossible-to-kill flying enemies that can stun you from halfway across the map. Foes have their own overwatch, so you can often get shot, move just a hair, and get shot again. And again. Aliens have a weak point to shoot, but their animations bring it in and out of the targeting reticle, and firing isn't instantaneous, so hitting them is often guesswork.
I suck at the game: 3.5/10. It's like, he didn't even try to understand the concept of the game ...

Asterisk next to Polygon's review. They didn't complete the game.

Meh, if you want to take issue with certain points of the review, that's fine. But I don't think focusing on THAT point is particularly pertinent. Perhaps you might want to draw from this that he didn't understand the systems and thus struggled with the game more than some here will, and that might be fair (can't say myself as I'm not far at all). However, he clearly spent a substantial enough time with the game to formulate an opinion. I doubt playing the last mission would have led to a change of heart

About five hours in (only beat Mission 3 though), and I'm enjoying it...although I've yet to run into a serious difficulty spike.

The enemy turns aren't too bad yet, really the reason I have such a long play-time is that it pays to be cautious in this game, and that means quite often I find myself hesitating to move forward. But once you find a groove in a level, and figure out the layout and learn the respawn points, things move at a quicker pace.

The enemy variety is interesting so far...enemies that explode, and thus you can die if you aren't careful using Overwatch on them, enemies that lob grenades (and according to in-game text I think might be able to alert other enemies to your presence), and this sentry alien that tracks you and has a larger enemy fire a missile at you from above. This is neat, though, because you have to factor in the surrounding at all times including what's above you...if you're under an object, or there's a roof above you (and the floor is covered with ice at parts, illustrating where the roof has been breached), the missiles won't hit you, which is vital for one part of the mission where you're basically always under watch by the sentries.

The voice acting is growing on me, as is the music. Mission 3, Map 2 has this really neat song...it's got "lyrics"...not actual lyrics, but there's this weird alien gibberish that plays along the beat, and it's really catchy. The story hasn't really picked up yet, not sure if it ever does, but I'm still at the point where you're just meeting everyone, so I assume it picks up after introductions. I've got the first four characters...

John's my favorite, so far. His voice acting is endearing, and I love using the grenades to blow shit up. Tiger Lilly is pretty cool, she's got a nice, tough voice, and her healing capabilities are interesting---she can self-heal, too. Lion's fun, but I haven't really used his Lion Launch offensively much, really just used it to grab Cogs. He's got a lot of HP and DEF it seems, so he's a good sponge while everyone else Overwatches. Flynn...well, he's the "Mario", but nothing special. I'm not sure if you have to put him on your team each time, as I've yet to get five characters...speaking of which, having to choose what team to use makes me nervous. There's a default option I notice, which I guess gives you the most balanced team for the job? Beginners might like using that.

Between missions, John Milton Hay (this was a cool little historical character I thought was neat they included) has a little library which gives some cool background info on the characters, aliens, and setting. In case you're wondering, the game doesn't treat the characters as being from novels---the novels aren't mentioned, and the characters are treated as "real" people, although at the very least Henry Flynn's exploits are well known. I like these little extra features. There are two other options that unlock upon clearing the Scenario according to the digital manual, which I'm guessing are probably a music player and a cinematic replay option.

Unless things go south, fast, I'm really enjoying myself. I really think most people are gonna find these very low review scores to be odd once they play it themselves.

Hmm, didn't realize I ordered 2 copies of the game on Amazon. Now I have an extra copy I won't use. Lol. I feel like an idiot.

Excited to play the game though.

Sell it in the Buy, Sell, Trade thread here on GAF. There's probably someone who'd buy it. Shipping probably wouldn't be too much of a problem either - you could probably fit the whole box inside a small USPS priority flat rate shipping box.

Thanks to your efforts, our dream of getting a stronger sequel to this is that much closer.

So once you unlock new boilers, do they automatically become equipped or something? I got 18 cogs so far, so I unlocked a few new ones, but I don't know if the game uses them as I unlock them or if I gotta do it myself?

To be fair, Nier had the issue of introducing fishing at a location where it's technically too hard to catch fish at your level RIGHT WHEN YOU GET THE DAMN FISHING ROD. Heck, I didn't even notice the marker on my map at first. I'm RIGHT next to water, obviously I'm going there to try out fishing. It'd be like giving you a new weapon outside a dungeon & then you go in to try it out only to find out you're 20 levels underpowered without the game telling you. That was more of a bad game design choice (why not give me the rod at the same location I had to get the fish I needed?), but I still understand what you're getting at.
