Well, the recipe you describe is the recipe for a show that got bad marks from people and leads to people like Colin whining. If Sony is fine with getting bad marks and getting criticized all over social media, they can keep doing that.
I didn't say a dozen megatons. I said one. If you can't drop one megaton don't do a show. Again, it's what Nintendo does and why people like their shows. It’s about putting on a good show. Like MGS3 Delta is probably going to be good, people are looking forward to it but it’s appearance on a show is not going to impress anyone because we know about it and have known about it for years.
This is how it is and why Sony keeps getting crapped on for these shows.
The recipe I describe is the one that makes them make more money from selling games and subs than ever and having the biggest active userbase ever. It gets record views and it's super effective.
This is the important topic for them, not what a few childish fanboy haters say on internet because they are fans of rival console, or because Sony doesn't bring back a two decades old IP that nobody bought and nobody would buy now.
They make these shows to highlight some of the main games coming in the next few months to market them, including a diverse lineup that covers different niches, with some games for some types of players, another games for other type of players, etc. And when ready and makes strategically sense for them, to make some important announcements. Just like the Nintendo shows, these videos these are for this, not to show megatons.
The structure and goal is the same in both Sony and Nintendo videos, but you happen to like the Nintendo ones and dislike the Sony ones because you're a Nintendo fan and not a Sony one. PS fans get excited with a MH Wilds trailer with its main theme because feel nostalgia of the PS2 and PSP entries, an Onimusha gameplay reveal, with Metal Gear, seeing Days Gone or Housemarque back, seeing cool PSVR2 games for those who have PSVR2 etc. Even many with getting WWE news (I don't like it but it's a top seller game).
They won't like all the games, but minimum they'll see around half a dozen of them that they'll love. Other PS fan like love other half a dozen of these games, most of which won't be shared with the other user. And another player will like other ones, etc.
Speak for yourself
We are getting DS2 and GoY this year
Saros, and possibly Intergalactic and Wolverine in 2026
We may also see Venom, Cory's new IP, Firesprite's next game (Until Dawn 2?) being released in 2025/2026. In addition to some smaller 2nd party games, some from China or Korea, from where we can get some great surprise as Stellar Blade was.
Plus we'll get the one that pretty likely will be the biggest money maker of all of them: Marathon. Sony will have very strong 2025 and 2026 years as usual,. We'll eat good.
There is a prevailing perception that Sony isn't releasing a steady stream of exclusive titles or presenting them in SoP/showcases in a way that sustains hype and goodwill for the platform. Whether it's valid or not is a different debate, but the perception exists. You may not feel it. I may not feel it, but it's there.
This is flateartherism fake concerns, more than a perception. Whiny fanboys that never will be happy no matter what they show.
Last year Sony's games (not counting 3rd party exclusives) won around 200 awards and was the company with more awarded games (around half a dozen of them), including the one with more awards of the year and Sony's fastest selling game on their history. And it isn't something new, it's almost the same almost every year.
In 2025 they'll have GoT and DS sequels, plus for the first time current gen only new MH, AC, GTA, Bungie (if not delayed, pretty likely they'll release at least an open alpha or early access) or Rainbow 6 Siege (and maybe more top IPs) stuff. It's going to be another insane and super busy year.
