Crackdown Review

first post updated.

I figured they would be a link the review in a thread almost instantly then I remembered where I was :lol

Awesome, I would have given Gears an 8.0. I hope this is as good as Gears. Can't wait to find out, I've hidden from the demo. I just want to play the finished game.

I would have given Prince of Persia SOT a 8.9

Not much to do besides grinding my character? Lack of good boss and meaningfull missions?

GTA4 please save us. Crackdown is now a rental for me :(

Hehe

ZING!

I put them both together because of (presumably) awesome co-op play. It's the only reason I played Gears and the only reason I'm pumped for Crackdown. I hope it tides me over until the real next generaton co-op action arrives next month: EDFX.

I loves my co-op.

I feel the same way... Obviously in a sandbox game you can find things to amuse you for a lil' while... Like, for me, it was picking up cars and throwing them into the water, or piling them up and blowing them all up at once... but, it gets old really fast to me... A more thorough story with missions would easily make this game more worthwhile... well, maybe not as worthwhile as the H3 Beta that's in it... but, heh, more worthwhile none the less... That's what makes GTA stand out as the king...

GTA is cool because it's interactive, there's simply a shitload of extra stuff you can do. They seem to ignore this in Crackdown... :(

dissapointing.. this game sounds like it should be nothing more than a rental but theres so little else out for 360 i just know im gunna stick down £40 for this :(

I sorta noticed that as well.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but what more is there to do in GTA than in Crackdown? In GTA, the only real incentive (going by the standards of this review) to explore is to locate hidden packages.

taxi missions
police missions
fire engine missions

I'm not terribly fond of the GTA games, but those are some of the extras they could be talking about, right?

Seriously, what is the intent of the thread?

Am I to understand that an 8.0 is now a bad score for a game? Or was this somehow expected to be an awful game, despite the nice demo, and now I should rejoice in an 8.0?

Enlighten me, as I can't fathom that this thread's purpose is as transparent as it seems.

Races
Hidden jumps

the intent was there were people waiting up for the god of war II review but when it comes to crackdown the review was posted for 20 minutes and not a single thread about it and I was joking :lol

True but GTA has a decent story as well.

To me though all I want is just a space case game that I can just play without thinking.

Ya know my homie!?

why is it in this game are superheroes limited to running fast and jumping high?

And throwing giant stuff, and taking lots of bullets. I guess the Hulk, Batman, and just about every other superhero that does not shoot lasers out of their eyes and talk to fish is no longer a superhero.

Yeah. I'm surprised there's not something pretty similar to the vigalante stuff built straight into Crackdown, since you play as the cops and all. Maybe there is in the full version? High speed chases with the ridiculous vehicles would be awesome though.

My bad. Forgot about those.

Actual missions?

Based on what I've played and read, Crackdown just has you running around shooting hundreds of dudes without really attempting to create a real scenario. Having something drive you through the game is rather important, I believe. I've become tired of sandbox gameplay, but I do enjoy the large worlds they offer. The world and controls of Crackdown mixed with a solid mission driven experience would be excellent.

... train, car mods, pizza delivery, courrier, dancing mini-games, bike school, car school, triathlon, car exporting, selling cars and bikes, etc etc etc

There's ALOT you can do in GTA.

Pretty much... GTA:SA for example:

Progressing Storyline
Leveling system of it's own (working out, eating right...)
Actual Characters you meet in the game to continue the story
The various "off-story" missions like the taxi/police stuff
Girlfriend mini-game type thing (read: not hot coffee)
and the cool missions...
I remember shooting all the stuff down on the roof of the R/C hobby shop, and the "Flight of the Red Baron" mission... haha... that R/C plane mission was so cool...

Bingo. Every preview, review, and podcast seems to point toward Crackdown being a true "sandbox"-style game, in that there is no narrative to push you along from one plot point to another. Moreover, there really don't appear to be any "missions" (or side-missions, for that matter) outside of killing off the bosses of each of the gangs.

Which is exactly why I love it. My backlog and lack of playing time has soured me on GTA-style games because I'd be overwhelmed with simply too much stuff to do. I like the stream-lined approach. :)

I'm so spoiled by my 180 hours of GTASA that i couldn't love Saint's Row and starting to be deceived by Crackdown somehow. I even fear for GTA4 somehow :(((((

There's certainly a lot less you can do in Crackdown than in GTA, but for me the core gameplay (i.e. running around/shooting/driving) is just better in Crackdown than it is in GTA.

Honestly, Crackdown is the first "GTA clone" where I could play the game and not think about GTA. It's not just that it's a good game, either. Honestly, it plays very differently than GTA, and I think expecting them to have the same strengths and weaknesses is wrongheaded.

All this stuff is optional. You don't have real advantages to do it in GTA.

GTA = you can play streamlined and you get stuff for those who want stuff.
Crackdown = you can play streamlined.

I cannot conceive a way to see "less options" as "better".

Downloaded the demo last week, I only played the single player part but I wasn't a big fan. No purchase for me, I'm waiting on Guitar Hero 2 and Virtua Tennis 3.

I don't think sussing out a bunch of missions would be an improvement. The point of the game is great gameplay mechanics. Rather than adding linear missions to the mix, I'd rather see more toys added that let you create your own fun.

It's a little funny that as soon as someone designs a game that deviates from the traditional formula, the hardcore start whining that it's not exactly like every other game. The same crowd that lament the lack of originality in game design. W.T.F.?
