Crackdown Review

I played the demo and had a lot of fun, but I also couldn't help but wish there were more clear cut mission objectives. Still, I'm a big fan of wide open games that encourage you to explore, so I think I'll enjoy this. Co-op should be worth the price of admission alone.

Does anyone think that Crackdown may get close to Gear's sales figures?

I certainly think so.

Maybe. But how much is the Halo 3 beta influencing that? The game doesn't have nearly the hype that Gears had leading up to it's release.

It's a little funny that as soon as someone designs a game that deviates from the traditional formula, the hardcore start whining that it's not exactly like every other game. The same crowd that lament the lack of originality in game design. W.T.F.?
Uh...

There's a huge difference between lack of innovative design and just plain lack of design.

"Hey lets design a game with nothing to do! That's innovation baby!"

No...

What if they give you plenty to do, but just no set direction to get it done?

Yes, because there's absolutely nothing to do in Crackdown. I spend hours in the demo with my character just staring off into the distance.

The game isn't for everyone, but I have the suspicion it's going to be a much bigger hit than most are expecting, and with longer legs than most as well.
Trying to judge this game's success with gamers via sales figures is flawed from inception.

Crackdown = $60 Halo 3 Beta Fee

No matter how good the game is, it is going to be near impossible to escape that label.

There's ALOT you can do in GTA.

Trade all those in a minute for jumping over buildings. No question.

Especially since you'll be bringing it up every time you can.

Yeah, between you and me, I think I forgot all the side stuff in GTA because it never really appealed so much to me. Not to sound like I'm putting it down or anything, but I had more fun just screwing around in the big ol' worlds than doing the side missions. I think I'll be largely fine with Crackdown's lack of side stuff.

Complaining that there are no missions is like being dropped off at the playground and sitting there because no on is telling you what to play on next.

Totally agree, White Man. I've forsaken all the other games to play a damn demo over and over and over. It's an amazing platformer.

I`m sure the devs will be crying into their beer at the stigma

Not much to do besides grinding my character? Lack of good boss and meaningfull missions?

GTA4 please save us. Crackdown is now a rental for me :(

You would have to own an xbox360 first mister. Which we both know isnt the case.

By the way, next time you have to attend a presentation, dont arrive too late, youll be stuck standing at the back of the room. :)

On top of that, Crackdown lets you do a helluva' lot more in that World than you could in GTA. Granted, GTA has a tighter story, but the freedom and exploration in Crackdown is far beyond GTA.

For some yes, for others no. Honestly i got tired of messing around in GTA pretty fast. I loved doing the extra stuff so much that my GTASA game clocks at 180 hours and is 96% complete without guide, help or the internet. Extra stuff is good to be there because there is people enjoying it.

I will definetely have fun with Crackdown but i fear i may stop playing it when the mission are done and my levels are maxed out. By the review it sounded like something that can be done a bit fast so it's getting me worried. Anyways, i'll play the retail version this week and i'll see if i stay on the rental side or not.

I wasn't very fond of the demo but to be honest I need to give it more time before I declare dislike of the game...

My posts are no more than continued discussion of what has already been said about the game.

Invite a friend to co-op and invent your "extra stuff"

yeah. you should buy an xbox360 too, because playing the game without one may not give the game all the praise it deserves.

I've stated many times through my post that i enjoy the 360 and PS3 games through friends. I don't understand what point you are trying to make.
I won't be critisizing games i don't know jack shit about. I also can be late to a presentation if i wish to :P

And you should cut your hair dude.

damn man, my head is clean shaven for 2-3 weeks now. you should try to open your eyes when youre looking at me. I, for one, noticed you still wear that toque.... pitifull...

and my point was : Stop sayin you will buy the game and max out your character when we both know you wont do so.

You sure don't know me. If i buy that game i'm gonna max out my character. I might also do it at my best friend's place if i enjoy the game enough. I've finished almost just as many games on friend's consoles than on my own consoles. You should know me better before blowing out stuff and also being off topic to begin with.

Youre telling me you will actually buy the game to play it at your friends house ? Or your friend will buy it and you will play his game ?

Damn, I dont want to be your friend if that means youll spend hours in my living room playing games on my consoles. Being your friend must suck :(

I though xbox360 was the biased? or unreliable? Oh wait that is only for good reviews...when they are less than expected, its totally reliable...see also famitsu reviews

I thought we looked at eurogamer? oh wait, they gave crackdown a good review - nevermind

Already paid off. Picking it up on launch.

8.0 is solid. Not a spectacular review, but with the inclusion of the Halo 3 beta as well this will work just fine.

Yes there is a buffet of missions a side jobs. Too bad just like a buffet they are lacking in quality and depth.

Crackdown has good controls & fun gunplay. I'd take that over busy-work anyday. But I'm the type of person who tends to enjoy messing around with games more than "beating" them. This is something I can see doing with Crackdown.

Seriously...can there be at least an iota of consistency on the GAF banning? First the Dave Long (or whatever the hell his name was) in the other thread blatantly trolls, then trolls some more, and nothing. Now more trolling, I'm sure with no side effects whatsoever. However, let a single sound out in a thread somewhere else and watch how quickly the ban comes. WE NEED CONSISTENCY!

As far as the complaints of Crackdown, I think being able to team up in co-op offers great opportunities for tons of extended replay value. This will be just another game people question the sales of, claim xbox fans will buy anything (while quietly ignoring the sales of Viva), and try to spin how devs don't love this.

QFT, and also which is a shame there's no motivational story to go behind it to drive the game... Just like all you people saying, "I don't need story, gimme grenades and cars", don't discredit the fact that people like story to go along with their games...

To some, lacking story, it's like "Gaming Iliteracy"...

Like I said, I think the controls are the best yet in a sandbox game, but it's just missing an element that's important to me, story... It could really push the game to perhaps past GTA levels...

Good thing you're not a reviewer then.

I do review games, I just don't give a score.

I think 8.0 is a great game. I hope Crackdown does turn out to be great. I have high hopes.

Atleat in my area the hype is huge for Crackdown. Huge enough that my local Gamestop has actually stopped taking preorders on the game because of high demand.

I understand the complain that there isn't a story. But are people actually using GTA as an example of a game with a good story? O.o

For some reason I have never been impressed with the GTA stories, and usually get bored and start skipping them...

I love how people intimately know everything about this game and how fun it is... even though most of us if not all of us haven't played the final retail version.

Who knows maybe there is more to do in this game then you think. Go watch the gameinformer.com video preview if you don't believe me.

No...

There is more than one way to approach a sand-box game. GTA is one approach. Crackdown is another.

IMO, Crackdown's design is pure minimalism. It focuses soley on gameplay, which it does quite well. It's a different take than GTA goes for, a slightly more "video-gamey" take than even Mercenaries, but for me at least, it's fun as heck.

Personally, I would rather have more Mercenaries/Crackdown-style sandbox games than Saint's Row GTA-like knockoffs.

I liked the Crackdown demo and was planning on purchasing it but hearing about the lack of content makes want to hold on to my $60 and wait till the price drops.

I'm already in the Halo 3 beta so I don't have that as an incentive.
