I just went to best buy and you can get a series x there with disk drive. I think (hope) this is just an Amazon problem.

It kinda sucks as this is the first Gen I got an Xbox (well after a switch and ps5) and I got it for free, they gave them out with Verizon internet last year. With a $100 gift card and month of game pass. Kinda strange how awesome that deal was.

Game pass was a mistake. All they had to do was keep going with backwards compatiblity and exclusives, but how can you do that when you spend 5 years trying to buy Sega on Wednesday, but walk out with Bethesda and Activision instead. Seriously their strategy was shit. How hard is it to repeat og Xbox or early era 360? Hire Peter Moore back, fire Spencer.

In the UK. My son has asked for a series x for xmas. Not in an expected way but more dad if you can the only thing I want is an Xbox.

I said to him why don't I just get you a ps5 but he said for his friends etc he would prefer an Xbox.

So I've been hunting this week. No where has deals on xboxs it's like 20 quid off. Arpund 460 to 470 pounds while ps5s with disk drive are 399 and digital is even less (wouldn't get him that)

What is MS even doing at this point. How can you not be toe to toe at least with your competing product at the busiest time of the year.

Ms should be doing everything they can to be cheaper than Sony.

Crazy stuff.
Your son sounds like a special kid.

Seriously. Have you had him tested?

Don’t you already have 10 xboxes in your house?

Microsoft tried but these distribution systems simply exhausted their potential, the traditional way of consuming games proved to be more resilient than Microsoft's ability to overcome it. Microsoft's only future is to make games for its old rivals, Nintendo and Playstation, just as there is no vacuum of power or leadership, it won't take long for some company to appear to occupy the room left by the Xbox consoles.

Meta Quest already has that spot but it's different because it's also creating it's own space, but that's also what PlayStation did when it entered the console race it pushed Atari & Sega out of the race while reaching new markets.

Why people surprised? Their biggest marketing campaign is to show that everything is an Xbox. People have to wake up and understand that's their strategy. And it's a long time coming, even before they announced some games on Playstation and Switch. It stated with Game Pass and games day 1 on PC. Next step will probably be Play Anywhere including Switch and Playstation, not only PC. You buy the game and can play wherever it is available.

It doesnt help that the cheap fucks only dropped it $50 this year (last year it was $150)

And on top of that, sony definitely undercut them by dropping the ps5 price by $75

What's so interesting about watching Xbox consoles die is how slow it has been. No Atari crash. No Sega last hurrah.

Just a steady, decade-long decline ending in a whimper, not a bang.

Identifies as young
They sold out so it's some demand

They lose a good chunk of money on every unit sold so I'm guessing they are limiting production regardless of demand. Nothing Microsoft is doing suggests they are interested in selling Xbox Series consoles any longer.

I took a look at Best buy, Walmart, and Target. The new stuff was in stock aside from the 2TB edition.

Typically retail presence is higher priority than online.

They were the same price for Black Friday, but yeah not enough of a discount when you’re getting slaughtered by the competition.

Moderated wildly
Not so simple. For people to buy it must also be seen in stores. They could also make deals, bundles, marketing, etc. The fact they are not doing that means that hardware is far from their priorities.

It seems they have given up on this gen more than they gave up on last gen, which basically looks like theyve completely given up on Xbox hardware.

Such a strange business.

Microsoft gave up.
This could be one of the worst holiday seasons for Xbox in their history.
I think we'll hear some news about the situation soon, such decisions can't exist in a vacuum, they're platform wide and hardware is just a piece.
There must be other plans to compensate (going OEM, increase multiplatform development and so on).

The OEM move will be the most logical step for them. It's a get out of free jail card from the traditional console market.

Although they need to have an OS dedicated to gaming for it to work, just slapping on windows on some box that's made up of off the shelf parts is asking for a failure. I supooe if they can make a decent dedicated os for gaming the can put it on their handheld and the oem consoles.

The other issue is getting OEMs onboard and convincing them this is worth it.

Even if Xbox releases a new console in 2026 i'd bet Sony won't even care at this point tbh.

There's no reason to do so.
Any console released before 2030 might as well be considered a "pro" or "enhanced version" of the PS5 and Xbox series systems. They will have zero exclusives and will only be bought by enthusiasts. Microsoft understands there is no movement to be made in the Console market, as the vast majority of console owners won't upgrade until well past 2030

They are all in on cloud, which will potentially be absolutely massive for them. And it should grow the gaming community exponentially

Particularly when the console not only has to be much better than the Series X, but the PS5 Pro too! That would have to be one hell of a jump, which means not cheap to produce/sell, which means DOA.

I don’t know what their best strat for hardware is at this point, but the handheld idea is at least a potentially good pivot.
