I always found the term 2nd party weird. If a game is published by the platform holder it's first party to me.

I think Sony investing in new IP and new teams can only be a good thing. Good on them.

"Second party" is just a term used for differentiation. When the person using it is talking about games published by a first party but not in ownership of the studio based on the context of the conversation. You're right. Any game or IP owned by the first party is, indeed, a first party project. But if the conversation calls for making distinctions based on whatever the point is, it's easier to say "second party" than say "first party game but made by a third party studio".

Second party studios are not owned by Sony but are making only games for Sony cous they have a contract in some form.
But that Contract can end ore bought off, just like at that time the second party studio Insomniac. They where a few years an indepented Studio and made a game for MS under contract for one game.
Now Insomniac is a first party studio owned by Sony.

Doubtful but we'll have to wait and see. Sony is essentially bankrolling new studios to get them off the ground. They've done this before. They did it with Media Molecule and Kojima Productions. The former ended up being acquired. In both cases their first project was at least console exclusive. Just depends on the nature of the deal and how invested Sony is but it definitely sounds like Sony is heavily investing in Haven, Firewalk, and now Deviation. Anticipate the first games from these studios to be exclusive to PlayStation with possible PC releases. There's also a good chance Sony might seek to outright own the studios if they feel they're very valuable. Would be much cheaper than buying them later after they're well established.

You are either a 1st party owned Studio or IP or you are a 3rd Party owned Studio or IP.

You can be a 1st party studio making a 1st party IP which is multi platform.
Sony San Diego Studio, MLB on XSX and PS5

You can be 1st party studio making a 1st party IP for 1 platform.
Coalition, Gears of War on XSX

You can also be a 3rd party Studio making a 1st party IP that is exclusive on 1 platform.
Housemarque, Returnal on PS5

Colloquially we choose to describe the 3rd party studio making 1st party IP as 2nd Party but legally they are 3rd Party independent studio making 1st party IP.

Not sure about this Jade Raymond Haven Entertainment deal, but between this announcement with Deviation Games, and the Firewalk deal, PS5 should be well-stocked for quality shooters I imagine.

Smart of Sony to turn to industry vets hungry to make their name in a new environment aswell.
