Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?

I turn most of that shit off anyway, but a good general PSA.

Film grain and CA especially are IQ degrading effects. Motion blur is subjective but I've started turning it off even when playing something at 30FPS if given the option.

Ima be real, I still have no idea what CA is. I always turn off film grain if a game lets me though.

Halo on id Tech would have been fantastic…
not sure how i feel about this statement.halo was microsoft's doom. the aesthetics are derivative, the engine is better showcased by unique, innovative games. that said i didn't know indy was the only other game than doom eternal to use id tech 7, in waiting to play the game myself but pretty stoked.

The old VHS style color degrading is CA. Mostly used in the corners of the screen. Don't know why the fuck so many developers apply it thinking it gives their game a distinct visual look, it just makes the IQ look bad.

Bloodborne is one of the most famous and egregious examples of it.

I’ve never actually thought about it before. But damn. You’re right. That’s ugly as sin.

CA is color distortion at the edges of the screen that simulates the imperfect lensing of light in a film camera's lense
This comes from a time when devs were ashamed of making games and wanted to be taken seriously by creating "adult" art, so they harped on film techniques like CA, lens flare, film grain, and all that garbage post-processing to give their presentation a filming look.

So many developers and artists in the industry were and still are so goddamn insecure.

TAA vs DLSS Quality (20% improve performance with clear image and less blur)

yeah DLSS is clearly better than TAA here. Doom Eternal was already exactly like this. in Doom even DLSS Balanced at 1440p goes head to head with native TAA... so I wouldn't be surprised to see the same here

What about the optional texture pack? Should I download this with an 10GB card? DF only mentioned the texture pool size which according to them I should set to medium or high (I'm playing at 3440x1440, so neither conventional 1440p nor 4k). But how does the texture pack work with this?

To learn how to work with id tech you must work at Bethesda?

I know that you can learn UE at most schools, but I don’t think that is the case with id tech, so using it “industry wide” isn’t going to happen.

And also from a community aspect, it was highly moddable.

Epic Games' business development team have cleaned up this generation, and it's such a shame.

What's crazy to me is that Microsoft now have iD tech but they are deciding to go the UE5 route for the next Halo, it makes no sense.
It's recruitment.

The #1 edge UE has over others is that it became the standard. It's now kind of the Photoshop/MS Word of its field, which makes a very big difference when it comes to recruitment.

So it's much easier to find people who are experienced with anything UE than it is for something like REDEngine (where you basically HAVE to be an ex-CDPR alumni in order to have any kind of experience with it).
