Digital Foundry: Monster Hunter Wilds PC - Profound Perf Problems Must Be Addressed

Gaiff

SBI’s Resident Gaslighter

  • Shader pre-compilation takes 6 minutes on a 9800X3D and more than 13 minutes on a Ryzen 3600
  • Awful textures even on High textures
  • Major frame time spikes when turning the camera on a 4060-powered PC at High settings and 1440p DLSS Balanced
  • The same awful textures are present using a 12GB RTX 4070 GPU
  • Have to lower texture quality to Medium on 8GB GPUs to avoid stutters and frame time spikes, but they look even worse. Quickly panning the camera still causes frame time spikes, however
  • When moving the camera slowly, those frame time spikes don't happen
  • The frame time issue remains even with low textures
  • This problem is mitigated on an RTX 4070. Alex suspects it's a streaming issue where the GPU decompression load is too much for lower-end GPU and causes massive frame time spikes
  • Does not recommend the game for 8GB GPU owners and avoids caution even for upper mid-range GPUs like the 4070
  • The game seems broken on Intel GPUs. Arc 770 is in the 15-20fps range with missing textures and other visual bugs
  • You can brute-force those issues to a degree on a high-end system
  • Right now, he cannot do optimized settings because it results in the game looking visually unacceptable
  • Another L for PCs

lmao at these textures holy christ.

But it's DF's fault for trying to run it at 1440P on just a 4070, these resolutions should be reserved for a 5080+
1440p DLSS Balanced...that's an internal res of like 800p.

One thing though, those who were mocking the Pro for running it at 1080p base resolution aren't looking particularly good right now.

I was struggling for a while to decide whether to get this on a 4070 PC or Pro, but after running the benchmark and seeing the wild (no pun intended) framerates all over the place and stuttering I went with the console version and it seems it was the right choice. Not that the pro version is anything to write home about mind you, especially the image quality which is just ok, but at least performance in the 60fps mode has been very consistent in the few hours I've played so far. The beta on console was awful in terms of performance and it seems they took the time to actually fix it, but perhaps that left them less time to do anything about the PC version. Very unfortunate as the friends I'll be playing with are on PC and I can already imagine them complaining or even dropping the game.

That's the most important thing. I can accept poor visuals if the performance is consistent. This has both poor visuals and inconsistent performance even on mid-tier PCs it seems. Maybe monster rigs with 5080s, 4090s, and 5090s can get consistent performance.
6800XT + 5800X3D + 32GB
Same tier. Don't suppose you've bought the full game?

Bullshit, i play 99% games at 4k60+++ that look 2 gens better than wilds on a 4080.

The game should run at 4k60 on a 4070 without a single sweat.

Even on pro the game runs at 1080p… the game is a technical mess.
At least the performance is consistent. Yeah, the game looks like shit, but even on a maxed-out PC it’s still ugly. I’d rather play a game that looks like crap but runs consistently than the same game that looks less crappy (but still crappy) and runs poorly.

No, the performance is quite consistent. Not perfect, especially in later areas, but they do a good enough job maintaining 60fps.
you forgot the part where the base consoles drop into resolutions resembling pixel art to maintain that.....and even on the pro it looks like you forgot to put on your glasses.
This game is just garbage on all systems and even bruteforcing it on high end PCs has quite narrow limits.
It`s almost impressive just how bad the tech is.

Agree with more consistent framerate, disagree with the good job part… The game doesn’t even look that great for the performance we are getting.

The turn on frame gen message is worrisome, looks like the devs are starting to relay on that tech for performance…
Except it doesn't boost performance... it only masks visual aspects of it without any of the experiencial benefits of actual good performance.

Nah, I said it looks like shit one post above.

Pretty much in line with the Steam reviews then.

Considering my gripes with the beta and the fact that they haven't been addressed, I'm nowhere near desperate enough to play this to get the PS5 pro version.

Wait for 50% off or more it is then.

Every time i hear people having super long shader compile time i always think they exagerate since it has never been longer than 5 min for me, usually even shorter.

Is wilds gonna be the first one that finally prove me wrong?

Is it just me, but the way he sounds I felt Alex is really angry? Yes he is pc warrior but I dont blame him since to be honest, there really is some technical issues which im sure are fixable on both console and pc. But still the game is very good and excellent design and presentations and hunting is fun. Im sure technical fixee and updates for PC and console come early. Looks like the console version are much more stable. For me, I will enjoy the game on my base ps5. Just enjoy the game for now fellow hunters. 💪

Games should be launching with KCD 2 like performance, not this shit.

"Just put up with it until its fixed" isn't good enough for me im afraid.

Both are laughable, i said a few days ago, maxed on a 5090 it looked good... at times, but everywhere else it was really bad

tbh what they showed from the 4070 was running from 70 to 90 FPS, lowering resolution to 1080 and settings to medium should give 100+ FPS, it'll look terrible but at least it'll be quite smooth
