Digital Foundry: Monster Hunter Wilds - PS5 Pro Tech Review - The Best Way To Play On Consoles

Just got a chance to watch the video on a bigger screen. Seems like 40fps/120Hz Balanced Mode would be the obvious winner since it has RT reflections and higher frame rate/lower input latency than Quality, but he was saying something about it being choppy, "As a final note, just like PS5, 120Hz output with VRR doesn't engage LFC with this title for the balanced or resolution modes, so it feels choppier than it should, especially when uncapped." Kind of confusing as 40fps/120Hz capped shouldn't need VRR if it's hitting it's target with consistency.

So output res is 1080p with DLAA/PSSR AA or it's reconstructed from 1080p to 4k with pssr? I can't watch video right now.
if it is reconstructing to 4k I'd be surprised. it looks way too blurry for a 4k upscaled image

I got the impression that PSSR AA is used at 1080p native rendering and then stretched to 4K output with FSR 1

The former. Basically they set PSSR to 1080p as target.

I don't believe FSR is used at all. That will result in telltale FSR artifacts.

Also, remember when they LIED constantly and desperately to you and told you that PS5 Pro wouldn't provide frame rate boost? Funny times.

Cerny specifically said it would boost framerates - it was designed to "eliminate the choice between graphical fidelity and performance". Resolution mode graphics at performance mode framerates. Except everyone knew from the beginning that devs would take the Pro into consideration when creating new games. Sony isn't policing every game and how they are using the Pro's additional headroom, and they (for better or worse) aren't holding the PS5 Pro Enhanced label back from dev teams if they make different choices (different Pro modes, PSSR and RT options, etc).

lol 1080p on the new $800 console with these level of graphics.
RE Engine is an absolute shit show for open world games. This has to be one of the worst optimized games of the gen

How is this game getting 90's score when it looks like this and everyone says it doesn't present a challenge?

We've seen plenty of examples of how much game journos struggle playing games, so it being easy is probably a plus for them.
And they usually don't care about technical issues as long as they aren't of the game breaking kind.

Most gamers don't care either. This will probably sell like hotcakes so Capcom will see optimizing games isn't worth it.
Look forward to the next MH on Ps6 looking slightly better than this and still running at PS3 era resolutions in the year 2030.

Of all the PS5 Pro enhanced games I've played, FF7 Rebirth is probably the only game that feels night and day in the fidelity jump for me when played using that Versatility mode. Not sure how on earth did Square managed to make the Base PS5's quality mode even more sharper but at twice the frame rate when played on Pro. Monster Hunter Wilds on the other hand feels like a step back when compared to Dragon's Dogma 2's Pro enhancements.

Lol a 10min video. There was absolutely no reason for them to hold off on separate Pro coverage.

They didn't want to compare it directly to the Xbox Series consoles or Phil's checks will stop coming in.

Only 1080p resolution just to play at 60fps is pitiful for console owners.
And on a "Pro" console we paid $800 for. Jesus Christ the game is "softer than base ps5" and only uses PSSR for AA and still has FSR1 in effect at only 1080p? That's pathetic.

This is another disappointing Pro patch.

The Pro is delivering "side grades" in most cases. Slightly better performance with PSSR slapped on. I thought PSSR was only 1 part of three big improvements according to Cerny. Sure, it looks better in most cases than FSR2 but hardly anything world changing. PSSR also has its own issues with RT and noise. These kind of tiny iq upgrades isn't why I bought a Pro!

MHW's "RT" is laughable too on Pro just bodies of water? Are reflections messy and noisy like other games with PSSR which seem ill equipped to handle RT well? If these games had PSSR AND improved graphical settings now that would be worthwhile but barely any games has managed that on Pro.

Well, i was let down by AW2, Silent Hill 2, Star Wars Outlaws, Black Myth Wukong, Dragons Dogma 2, and Hogwarts Legacy and now this game. KC2 is the only great Pro patch in over two months now. Soace Marine 2 was pretty good. Not amaxing but just barely worthy of the $800 console. Worried for AC Shadows next.

I keep hoping mainstream gaming media and Pro owners will collectively voice our disapproval with Sony over the Pro, forcing them to do something to improve the situation for this console. DF, while they tend sugarcoat things a bit, are the only outlet right now consistently making videos and calling out the very minimal upgrades in games. For example they just did a video on Hogwarts Legacy which pointed out the meagre changes compared to base console.

Have you ever thought about the possibility that this system is not for you, it's simply not what you want it to be (a high end PC) and you should just move on and sell it instead of constantly writing these wall of texts?

Most people are happy with the upgrades the console is offering.

Yep

But it could be just low res RT so it may look the same on PC version with similar settings.

Funny you mention KCD2 the game is optimized for PC and all the consoles. They did a very good job and make sure the game ran well even on series S the cheapest console. What you do expect Sony will do? Force the dev to optimize their games? If it dosen't run well on base ps5 or any console and even PC. What did you expect before the DF video of the Pro patch released? That it will run the same as KCD2 for example? We have to keep our expectations in check. The problem is not the Pro is the devs optimizing their games or their engine. The ps5 pro performance mode runs quality like Cerny said. That's what's suppose to do.

Using PSSR for AA instead of upscaling seems an interesting choice. It'll look a bit soft at 1080p but should give a clean image quality given what we've seen with DLAA.
