Dragon Age: Veilguard |OT| 'Oof': A non-buynary return to form

Coming up on 40 hours played.
Game has really kept my interest and attention. The characters are all very solid and I think for the most part the writing is quite good.
The companion quests are definitely worth doing, and even some of the random side quests ain't half bad.
Having said that, the game does suffer a bit from GoW 2018 syndrome, where it recycles stuff in terms of enemy types and animations. It's not as bad as GoW2018 but it's noticeable.
Sometimes you think by exploring you'll find some new awesome beast to slay..but nope, just another ghost demon thing. Still at about an 8.5-9 / 10 game for me, probably game of the year for me as well.

The writing is good? Man... 😂

I finished it and I'm glad I did because the end is pretty good, after the point of no return, you have real tension, real choices, that's what makes it good.
Companion quests endings are fine too as they let you chose for the fate of your companions, but it impacts gameplay more than anything so I don't know if I would have made the same choices knowing what the companions earn.
Before that, choices weren't very impactful, the first one of the game is big but you don't know the 2 towns at that time so it's a 50/50 choice, no real implication.

Combat is OK but I felt distance was more fun and easy than going melee on my warrior so I went full Captain America, getting every skill that boosted shield throwing and it was pretty OP, with 9999 crits on some weak points.
I was shredding normal mobs.

Bestiary is really lacking, I don't think you even fight one dwarf in the game, there's one funny event where you're fighting the same skeletons with swords (again) on a beach and your companions are constantly shooting: "There are Pirates!" like they couldn't even put some pirate hats on them so someone has to point that those are different skeletons.

Speaking of hats, they are so ugly on Rook... why do every one of them puts a mask on your face?
Armors are OK, transmog helps a lot you have plenty of choice.
Weapons are bad, even transmog, 6 colors of the same ugly sword isn't choice. And no 2H Sword in Dragon Age? I was maining it in Origins and 2...

I still don't really get their choice for upgrading stuff and especially companions' one: just before the end, Isabela sells you most of the stuff you thought you missed... but I finished with some companions with legendary weapons when other like Neve only had blue at best, really weird. Rook was full legendary.

Character design is ok but some big heads really pop out in cutscenes (what did they do to Maevaris?)

I don't really like the hub that you visit until you unlocked every paths (then you only use fast travel), you don't really feel a connection in the world between the different locations, especially the Necropolis that feels out of this world, completely closed, you don't know how normal people can travel from place to place.

I already wrote about woke stuff in another thread: non-binary stuff is misplaced (they should have used existing lore instead of modern stuff to tell the same story) and french translation is ugly to read.

It's a good game, not my GOTY but I had fun.

I don't know what the writers have against Neve but you can really go all in:
get her hurt in the first scene of the game
let her town get destroyed
get her infected by blight during the end

Even after 30 hours, im still tinkering with my female character. Had my wife help me because i kept creating trannys. She helped me with feminine features i didnt even know about like eye shapes, eye brows, shoulders and height, mouth and chin settings. I felt like i know less about women than anyone on the planet lol

I think she now looks far more feminine.

This game feel like comfort food, it does nothing great other than location art design and solas apparitions, and everything else goes from mediocre to decent, i haven't meet traash yet so i guess i have to see the worst of what the writing has to offer, in general the writing is too goody2shoes and rook is a charismaless protagonist, from what i heard these crows group should be fucking terrible but they are treated like city heroes or some shit?!
I never played past dragon age games so this doesn't bother me much but i can only guess how mad the old fanboys are...

It definitely gets better after 10-12 hours when combat and exploration open up and characters stop pulling kojimas and explaining stuff 5 times in a row.

The game would be much, much better with a more realistic, gritty artstyle, higher challenge and enemy variety, for now it's barely a 7.

I'm gonna say this, i'm having much more fun with this one than dogma 2, the game kinda has the same problems (low challenge, dull writing, low enemy variety) but in d2 these flaws feels much worse, challenge was non-existent, world and characters were the most basic fantasy trash imaginable with trash voice acting and you felt like you were fighting the same 5 enemies all the time.

He said it was GOTY, I can't take anyone seriously that claims this.

Besides the visuals and combat, this game is average to mediocre.

Yeah I actually think the characters have a lot of depth to them and a bunch of interesting themes are explored. I can probably write a good few paragraphs on each characters journey and resolution of their inner and outer conflicts. The moment to moment writing is at times simplistic and there are a few definite misses, but overall it's very good and interesting.

I looked at some GOTY lists, seems this year was kinda just OK. I have yet to play Space Marine 2 and Path of Exile 2 which I suspect I might enjoy even more. But I saw FFVII rebirth on one of these lists, also an ARPG with importance placed on characters and combat. I wonder how that game actually is, because I am also playing through FFVII remake and the writing is atrocious, the characters are borderline alien - no one talks like that. I suspect it must be poor translation from Japanese. So much of it is cringe and the characters are just garbage, including Cloud.

I still think Dragon Age is hated on for politics. As a package it's been one of the best experiences I've had in recent memory and I'm a huge action RPG fan.

Just stopped at the part what i think is going to be the end of act 1. First 8-10 hour i was like meh its okay, but now the game grew on me, combat clicked and im loving my time with it. It looks really awesome on the Pro at a silky smooth 60. Its so smooth even when i threw everything at it in combat. Wonder how it would run unlocked, im pretty sure there is a decent headroom here for more fps.

Im glad i didnt skipped this

The biggest hurdle in this CC is that to get past certain limits you have to change the pre-set heads; (they had a similar system in in Starfield but you could sculpt things separately to get the same result) but in this they give you 3 heads to morph between and that sets what the base is to an extent, so for example: there is no direct eye size setting (other than how open the eye lids are) and there is no way to change it other than by using the head morph with the pre-selcted base. So I have to find the eye size I want off an existing head or two…or three.

Another is tip is to maybe not stick to 100% real proportions:
pueWZUk.png

This head I made is waaaaay out of wack in terms of real-life proportion, but it still works…it’s “off” but doesn’t quite look “off”…anime sized eyes and spacing do wonders 😜

Keep the corners of the mouth at around 0, and don’t make your mouth too wide or narrow, or too indented/outwards on ‘depth’.

It’s probably my GOTY too; I liked DD2, Rebirth, Wukong…hell MW5 Clans was probably my personal GOTY before this point, but I honestly enjoyed my time more on this, especially with the last act in this game.

Take me seriously or not…

I wont but it's all good, it just means we're either are polar opposites on what is a good game or you have an agenda. I'll let you pick, I dont care.

This game is average to mediocre, take out the license and take out the controversy about it and this it's already forgotten.

The story has quite a bit of nuance to it:
The fact Rook could talk down the warden commander that quickly if you chose not to attack them…it seems absolutely unrealistic until you realize you’re tied to Solas by blood magic…the god of ‘lies, treachery and rebellion’ (depending on the story) and he’s kinda been giving his power to you the whole time.

Elemental enemy resistance are everything in this game, they trump everything else, when you understand that the game become even easier, i have no idea why people didn't liked the mage during the first levels, it was a killer machine since the beginning if you always have the right element, i swear people play vg for 30 years and they are still surprised pikachu sometimes for the most simple things...

Pretty asinine that i can't switch weapon during combat when enemies can have completely random resistances, i have to purposely lose to load the game again and it if it is one of those instances where the game load directly into combat you are fucked and need to reload a previous save, who the fuck thought that not letting me change weapon mid combat was a good idea in a fucking action rpg??

What i really appreciate in games besides good art is the sound design and i must say this game sounds fantastic. Everything is so crisp, music is great, dialogue sounds clean. SH2 was the last game i played before this and the sound in that game is phenomenal too

Its still there imo, but i notice it much less, its mostly subtle. Its a weird one. Today i had a conversation cinematic with an npc and his cloths were really low res, but after the conversation ended, it looked better during gameplay.

I’d like to start by sharing some screenshots. I started playing Dragon Age a couple of days ago, and I have to say that, as someone who’s not a fan of the series (despite casually playing them all), I’m quickly adapting to the more action-adventure focused gameplay. Definitely, like with FFXVI before it, there’s very little role-playing involved (actually almost plays like a jRPG this time), but I can’t complain about the presentation (huge care in crafting the environments), battle system (it's very solid), characters, or even the story (so far). In the end, everything works really well, perhaps even better than in previous installments, since the various elements are more focused, narrowed and well-stitched together. Also so far, after 4-6 hours of gameplay, there’s absolutely nothing "woke" about it. This was really exaggerated before launch I guess by some bad press.

Finished it after 50 hours. It’s a solid 7. However, the writing, the shallow combat, and the corridor-style levels are significant problems that prevent it from being substantially better.

On the plus side: for a big triple-A game from EA, it runs surprisingly well. I had zero issues with the game—no stuttering, crashes, or glitches. Stable 60 FPS and often visually stunning locations. It’s a shame you can’t really explore these places, as they’re just a backdrop.

They used the latest version of Frostbite (game engine). This is EA's own development, which came out in 2008, they had 16 years to learn how to work with it. As we can see, it worked out =)

So because you havent encountered it it's not woke?

Cmon man.
The way it was described it was like a walking talking propaganda game while there’s even less of it here than in more popular acclaimed games like TLoU, Spiderman or GoW. Overblown to say the least. It really makes some sound like pussies if they get so easily hurt by two stupid pronouns and a supposed optional conversation in a 60 hrs game. Grow some hair goddamn 😂

Let’s talk instead of the streamlined gameplay if you wish or mediocre to decent writing both of which don’t have anything to do with it being woke ☝️

Again like XVI they tried to make the game more widely appealing by simplifying some mechanics but in a time where now more complex cRPGs experiences are making a comeback. While I prefer this way I think both released at the wrong time, maybe would’ve work better 4-5 yrs ago.

I'm playing it right now and enjoying it so far. I have not unlocked all the companions yet (missing Emerich and Taash as I went to Treviso and did all the side quests and companion quests available so far instead of main story), so I'm sure that my comment doesn't hold much weight as I think I am too early into the game still.

Combat is a lot of fun as a Rogue so far but I wish I wasn't locked into what I picked early on. I don't like that I will have to replay the game to see what I could be missing out on, but I understand that with the way they decided to make loot work, it's just not possible to get around it, unless maybe all those items that would have been associated with the other classes just transformed into their Warrior variants or something.

The visuals are nice and the storytelling has been good so far and I am sure that by the end of the game I will probably be able to say that I enjoyed playing it overall, despite the politics.
I think the highlight for me so far has been the verticality on the maps. I like that it is not a huge open world. I am not coming into this from previous Dragon Age games so I did not really know what to expect but the exploration so far has been great for my taste.

That being said, I definitely wouldn't call this a GOTY game. This honestly doesn't hold a candle to FF7:Rebirth and if you somehow have not yet played that, make sure to add it on your list!

The mediocre writing doesn't have anything to do with woke?

What about the fact there are zero sharp edges? There's no slavery in Tevinter, no one is mean to elves etc (in fact noone is mean to anyone)

Everybody is nice to eachother constantly

You cant be a dick to anyone? You can only be a goody goody two shoes

That's not a consequence of woke writing? *DOUBT*

You havent even hit the part yet where all the 'woke' complaints come from.

So maybe keep playing and then form your opinion, instead of reading the first page of a 200 page book and proclaiming you know there's nothing 'woke' about the book.

Woke is more than just pronouns. It's writing the entire thing to not offend ANYBODY

I don’t think it has anything to do with it but more with moving away from being an rpg and so giving false illusion of choice or interaction while fundamentally being an adventure game. They couldn’t write different answers so they ended up making them all similar with this weird result. For most of it at this point they could just go for FF and remove dialogue options altogether. But being woke because of this? multiple changes in game design and development time probably being more the issue here plus wanting to reach a larger audience and not just adults.

The sanded down edges are indicative of woke.

As I already stated, woke isn't just "there's a minority in it!" or "There's a trans in it"

Its also sanding down everything that has a possibility to offend anyone basically. And that is 100% this game

The changes in gameplay are 100% to reach a larger audience, nice failure on their part. People warned them with Andromeda, that this wasn't the way to go (dumbing everything down) but I think they didn't care.

no one is mean to elves
Well, why not, you can make the main character an elf, then during the plot he will begin to be tormented by pangs of conscience for what the Elven gods did in the past, and the game will give you the opportunity to apologize for their actions. And yes, in this place you can really facepalm yourself.

In general, I agree, it's just a linear fantasy adventure game. DEI is present in the game, sometimes it's really obvious, like with Taash. But in general, they took a gloomy 18+ universe and cleaned it up as much as possible from all the inconvenient topics, which is why the game turned out to be simply as sterilized as possible, so much so that you physically cannot influence anything, you are given the illusion of choice. Because in order for this whole illusion of a sterilized world not to fall apart, the player must be strictly kept on the rails. Even if it destroys logic and contradicts the lore of the game.

Horizon series has never been about choice and they are very linear but when you have some actual dialogue choice you can choose to be an aggressive asshole or a kind heart, but a dragon age game can't even do that? Cmon...

I think it has everything to do with being extremely sanitized, these people want you to feel in a safe bubble where nothing can ever be offensive.

Even a false sense of choice would be better than rook being always a polite charisma vacuum, all companions being friendly and lovable and talking like little kids or millennials, and every faction being super sanitized compared to how they were in past games, now crows are good guys that protect the city and the lords of fortune that are basically pirates only steal stuff that isn't culturally valuable...WHAT??! :lollipop_squinting: gimme a break.

I'm enjoying the game decently enough but the writing is hilariously dull most of the time, and this is a cardinal sin for a bioware game, they had 10 years and a huge budget to make this game, there is no excuse for trash writing.

I felt like i know less about women than anyone on the planet lol
I read somewhere women and men evaluate appearance very differently - men judge it holistically, how everything fits together ; women isolate every element. That's why women will sometimes say "her neck is too short" , "her arms are too long", whereas men make all the "calculations" automatically and come up with general "hot or not".

Woke stuff is more in your face in other languages where the translation teams had to use woke culture created words/grammar to translate the game.
It's readable in english because they/them exist and it doesn't add anything to the plots that the characters are non-binary so you don't focus on it that much. In french I roll my eyes everytime.

Along those lines I read that men actually look at a woman's face first, where a woman will look at another woman's breasts first.

I was thinking about the writing in Veilguard and how sad it is that a younger audience will grow up thinking this is normal. I am old, but when I was growing up we had games like The Hobbit and Elite, games that came with actual books packed in with the cassette. In the case of The Hobbit it was a book we were reading at school, so playing along with dad on the ZX Spectrum at home felt like cheating at homework. There were also games like Zork and other text adventures which I'm certain accelerated my reading comprehension and literacy. I never felt like I was being spoken down to or patronised by games and literature then, as a child it was intellectually nourishing, as well as being entertaining.

Imagine a current world young audience figuring out The Hobbit or Elite. It would break their minds.

We really cant have a page with ppl saying they're enjoying the game without some idiot coming and posting "BUT BUT ITS WOKE!!!!!!!!!!". Jesus fuck. The only thing you can consider woke is Taash and her quest line and even that its more on the cringe side than anything else. Shes a huge buff Qun who doesnt know how to feel, most in her race compare her to men due to her size and the others want her to be feminine which is also a bit stupid considering their race. So she has trouble dealing with this and its why she considers to be both, hence the pronoun they instead of he or she. It's not a direct, call me they or u suck kind of thing. Its cringe but makes sense in its context. Now is her side quest bad compared to the rest? Yes because it wastes time with this while the other companions have their own villains and cool shit to deal with. There was also a side quest where a guy just straight out says non-binary which was no doubt retarded and woke, but that was it. One dialogue. 95% of the game is woke free, now stfu about it and let ppl enjoy the game.

Finally unlocked traash and she is already unsufferable 5 min in :lollipop_squinting:
I have been skipping her dialogue ever since i got her. I literally have no idea what her deal is and yet i still cant stand her from the few times she's opened her mouth during team meetings.

Everyone hates her. Even the purple forum. I wouldnt be surprised if she was given to a writer who hated being forced to write a non-binary character and purposefully made her a cunt.

My friend was trying to make excuses for her.... she's a teenager. they are trying to capture teenage angst. And Im like why? Who asked for this in dragon Age? Bioware has done characters like this before. Jack in ME2 had a very similar fuck you attitude but she was likeable.

It's weird because i want other characters to have some kind of personality but the one character who does have something negative to say is extremely unlikeable. These writers just have no talent. Zero. none. This isnt about bioware making a conscious choice to have zero conflict in the game. It's about basic writing skills. Conflict = drama. These guys just dont understand this very basic thing.

A game with literally millions of lines of dialogue cannot afford not to have any drama. It becomes bland and boring. I am straight up skipping dialogue for most quests in the game. even some story ones. there is zero point in engaging in these conversations.

Mossybrew

Yeah, some of the dialogue gets a bit cringe. IMO it's a minor issue. They release like ten JRPGs a year that have a million times worse and dumber dialogue and people just play them anyway. Who cares.

My minor gripes continue to be - hours and hours into the game and damn 90% of these armor appearances still suck so bad. Who designed this shit?

And the Venatori. Jesus H Christ you can't go ten minutes in this game without someone mentioning the Venatori. And after like 60 hours of the game what do I know about them? They're cultists from Tevinter. That's about it. And they're, bad? They basically fill the role as Generic Bad Guys with Bad Plans that Must Be Stopped Constantly. They're often referred to in dehumanizing language like rats and roaches, you are on multiple occasions encouraged to kill as many as possible. But they're uh, still just people right? It's a funny contrast to the recurring theme I'm at with companions of "everyone deserves a second chance" - everyone but Venatori cultists I guess lol.

And I have to add the dumbest Venatori moment so far, this isn't much of a spoiler but at one point you have to enter one of their encampments somewhat incognito, and you're stopped by a guard who says "Hold on a minute, I don't recognize you guys" MOTHERFUCKER HOW WOULD YOU RECOGNIZE ANYONE, YOU'RE ALL WEARING MASKS ALL THE TIME EVEN IN YOUR OWN PRIVATE CAMP.

Kinda disagree, i'm reading the reeeee ot since this one is pretty dead and everyone seems to love her, i have to read someone who doesn't like her yet, i onestly doubt you can even dislike her over there without the usual ban baiters asking people why.
And i think nobody was forced to write her like this, this is probably one of those weirdos self inserting himself in the game, i just doubt that the weirdo headchief in charge would let anyone write her if he was not 400% on board with the alphabet mafia, you think they would give her character to a "chud" that hate this shit? Highly doubt it.

Thank god most party members are kinda interchangeable skill wise except bellara that is kinda the best healer so you are not forced to have her in your party at all except the very first mission with her.

I still read all the dialogues tho, the moment i start skipping dialogues is the moment i'm done with the game, i only played one game in my life where i skipped dialogues and still had fun and that was division 2 (probably division 1 aswell).

I'm still a bit invested in the plot and i want to give chance to the companions, some of them kinda improve with time but it feels like hfw companions that were mostly boring and safe except kotallo that had some edge in him.
