Dragon Age: Veilguard |OT| 'Oof': A non-buynary return to form

Game has texture streaming issues on the Pro, its really annoying. Is it Pro exclusive issue or its the same on base model? Both gameplay and cutscene. Some of the character textures takes like 10-15 second to load the higher ress...

This game sounds like it's absolutely awful on the Pro ..what a shame I thought this was going to shine on Pro
 
There was a plot point involving one of the cities, and the way it is transformed after the incident is incredible; bodies covered in blankets with blood stains; some of them lumped together on the back of carts. Animals and pets that you once were able to pet on the city streets now, in a state from PTSD, are heightened in fear; barking at you. Some sit next to the bodies on the cart, suggesting it was their owner.

I criticised how empty the game felt during the few hours, but this here is an incredible transformation. I don't think I've seen this attention to detail, and context, in a video game before. These aren't just things ruined, but subtle changes that really invoke emotion.

I continue to be impressed by so many details in this game. Say what you like about the overall writing, the world building and accessibility features (e.g. you can even customise how bright hints that point to items on a map are, for instance) are so spectacular that they must surely become a standard in the industry.

This may not be the BioWare of old, but they've certainly got some talented people working on this game.

I'm 40 hours in and doing loads of side stuff and exploring. Playing on PC, 65 inch QD OLED, and Atmos amp with height speakers. The game looks and plays so good☺️. I'm starting to get pretty invested in the Characters now. Yeah I'm loving it. I got it on Ea play but I might buy it now as I wanna do a playthrough as the other classes.

Crazy that so many people missing out because of a few woke scenes 🤷‍♂️. It is a little cheesy at times but I actually like the Marvel movies to so I'm not put off by it. I actually think some of the acting is pretty great. I use female voice 2 low and it's the best I think.

I wonder how many people dissing the game know that Taash is a female who only wants to know as a dragon hunter, not some dude dressed as a woman 😂

I've only noticed the texture thing ONCE in 4 hours of play on the Pro. It is spectacular on the Pro. It's worth pointing out that, when discussing the Pro, tech channels will critique its overall performance, and rightly mention areas where it drops the ball. But that doesn't actually reflect 95% of time you're playing the game. Critiquing the technical performance of games does not always equate to games actually struggling to run, or even noticeable most of the time. I think sometimes people confuse the two.

I wish your companion abilities were not all on the same cooldown. I find myself just using the primer/detonator abilities and the other 2 powers they each have equipped are mostly ignored, unless Im in a pinch and need a companion's heal instead of a combo detonation.

Oh yeah, you absolutely do *not* need all of them. There are way more than enough and shops sell some and some shops even restock with new momentos after a while.

Just that those one's in the story dungeons are the only real misable things in the game as you only go to those dungeons once and never again.

So...apparently there is in fact some missable achievements, like if you dont convice that specific spirit to aid you and you fight it instead, which thankfully i managed and saw the achievement pop, which means its very missable and rare. But the worst one is choosing which city to save. If you choose to save the crows one u miss out on a huge side quest that will give you said achievement and yeah...i didnt pick Minrathos....so im pretty much screwed out of it... :\ It also has 0.2% on steam so it seems like a lot of ppl missed out on it. Thats kinda dumb, why would there be an achievement just for one city but not the other?

edit: some dude on reddit who got the plat as well said, its possible to get the achievement even if I saved treviso. not sure how, but I guess ill have to see.

This may be the game I have enjoyed the most this year.

I loved 'Origins. It's a top five RPG of all time for me. The storytelling in this entry of the franchise largely matches it. It has some obvious overtures to appeal to a modern audience but that is to be expected. It features a great cast of characters, most with their own interesting backstories and branching side arcs. I think it relies too heavily on assuming that players are aware of the events of Inquisition and its DLC, but it only took me five-or-so minutes of reading random wiki articles to get the gist of things (I largely skipped Dragon Age 2 and Inquisition for various reasons).

The graphics, in particular the character designs and combat animations, are fantastic. I wasn't expecting this game to look as good as it does in motion on a PS5 (performance mode no less) after seeing the pretty whack-ass teaser trailer I saw a while back. The surround sound treatment is also really good, with voices and environmental sounds drifting believably from location to location, speaker to speaker, as one positions their character or moves about the world.

Combat overall is very good. Fluid, satisfying, a mix of old school CRPG and more modern action-oriented systems. There are some hang-ups and jank but nothing egregious. It feels like a better realized Mass Effect 2 in this regard. Very well thought-out skill trees - no point in a build feels wasted. Early on it can actually be challenging as a mage during some hectic encounters or boss fights, when one hasn't yet enlisted any sort of front line or tank companions. However, it's nowhere near "Soulsborne" levels of difficulty. Rather it feels like group composition and one's selection of abilities and spells matters more than raw reaction time.

The gear and inventory systems are kind of threadbare. This might be a plus for some, a detraction for others. I find it adequete but not exactly interesting or terribly engaging.

Speaking of Mass Effect: it seems as though Bioware is using mechanics and systems in this game to test the waters in service towards an eventual new Mass Effect entry - analyzing aspects of their storytelling and combat mechanics to figure out what players prefer so that they can get the next Mass Effect right. Because this game feels very much like a Mass Effect game in a fantasy setting.

I am about 20 hours in and this is an easy 4/5 for me. It is the belle of the ball over in other social media I frequent, particularly in the PlayStation-centric circles I follow, so between its success on Steam for EA and popularity with the console crowd I hope this baby gets some solid DLC in the months to come.

i just dont understand the nerfing of role playing in role playing games. your entire job is to make a game where you can make choices. you did this for years, hell decades to great success. why throw it all away?

its funny. eurogamer review said that this is like Mass effect 2 suicide mission, only better. at least for the end of act missions. nope. ME2 suicide mission is still GOAT. This doesnt even come close. just because your team makes an appearance every once in a while doesnt mean its the same.

Im at 35 hours and just got to that point lol. And I wish there were more moments like that, as you say your rp for how you conduct your character is in a very narrow lane here. I wish I could play more of an asshole at times but I get thats just not the vibe they were going for in this game.

Anyway I have my gripes with the game but overall its a dense, meaty and largely satisfying experience. I like a long game like this even if at times all the side and companion quests can feel a bit overwhelming. Definitely GOTY contender.

I gotta imagine it has to be since it's such a pivotal story branch, would be weird if they lock out trophies / achievements for one half of the game.

Dragon age may not be everyone's cup of tea due to the Disneyfication of it and some very in your face gender identity stuff (very brief and optional), but overall it's a solid game.
Just sad that there are like 3 other threads dedicated to hating on this game for over a week now, you'd think people would have moved on with their lives, but no, let's continue being outraged.
Even sadder that most of them haven't even played the damn game and are going off a few cherry picked lines and parroting quotes from Skillup's review which was overly nitpicky and seems he didn't fully grasp the mechanics of the game from the Paul Tassi interview.
If some people think DA:V is childish, they should probably look in the mirror at their own behavior first.

Still loving this game. It's a story and character focused action-adventure RPG with lots of colorful, varied locations, sprawling cities, fun combat, and an interesting progression system. Pretty much everything I'd want from a game like this.

Just finished at about 85 hours all side quests done. And holy shit that last act was one hell of a ride, it really is Bioware’s best on the ending front.

Man i almost beat the level 50 dragon on my first try. i was only level 38 and didnt want to fight him tbh, but i kept doing good damage and got him down to less than a quarter health before dying. I think i will level up a couple more times and bring some better healing companions and abilities.

I really like how they handled exploration in this game. most levels are large enough that they dont feel linear, and almost all the chests are hidden behind some mini puzzle thats neither hard nor easy. it keeps the flow of the game going without any frustrating level gate bosses or obtuse puzzles. The chests upgrade your items which is a genius way to do loot. So many games give you trash materials but here you straight up upgrade your loot if you've found that item before. it's very rewarding. this would be a great action adventure game lol

Did a few more companion missions. No choices still. I still dont like any of the characters. The missions themselves are cookie cutter too. I really liked the andromeda loyalty missions because at least some of them were funny if not downright hilarious. You had great conversations with your crew throughout the missions, actual conflict. the characters, even the serious ones, were interesting to be around. its crazy that a secondary studio made a better bioware game than the main bioware studio. sucks EA shut it down. andromeda 2 wouldve been truly great.

i wouldnt say it sucks. its just there. not great not terrible.

combat is excellent. visuals are ok. game loop is extremely fun to play. ive put in 25 hours in the last week or so.. thats what? 3 hours a day? i almost never do this anymore.

Right that's why I was hoping it would be great...not many games these days do all the things a Dragon Age game does

nah, nothing like that. game isnt marvel or anything like the first trailers suggested. even the few quirky characters are pretty grounded.

its just boring. you might like it if you are into the lore. its better than most non-sony/rockstar games released nowadays even, but its no bioware.

You know you're absolutely right and I should know better. I've seen this first hand here with Jedi Survivor people saying they did a garbage job with Pro, meanwhile it's one of the games that has impressed me most because of how awesome the lighting combined with cleaner and more detailed image while playing in the Fidelity mode. It looks like a PC game now but that's if you play at 30 fps..some of the best RT lightinfbthere is in console

just started playing. there is a dialogue option that pops up on your companion when you're at home base which can sometimes trigger a companion quest. just did one for darvin and recorded it knowing it would be boring and pointless, but even i wasnt prepared for just how pointless it would be. lol



as you can see, the tone is fine. the dialogue is fine. the acting is fine. its just boring.

Yeah, but as I keep saying, it's too easy, you shouldn't have been able to beat it with such a gap in lvl 1st try and I'm pretty sure you could have managed it, just put healing on both companions and spam it, lol.

I'm saying this as I'm now about the same lvl as the dragon bosses and it's really no problem or challenge, never mind the ones from the story missions, those are just trivial, I think the last one I managed to kill it in half a minute.
Also they all have the exact same attack patterns, it's the same dragon boss, different skin.

What I'll say is that there was a boss that I liked at Weisshaupt again, it was easy, but I liked the mechanics, too bad it wasn't expanded more.
I also like the unique locations for some of the companions, in these moments you can still sense a tiny bit of that Bioware magic.
 
I got bored around 20 hours in. Felt like I made one decision that mattered and on hard the combat never challenges you. It’s just very rinse repeat without much thought.

In a lot of ways the game is like final fantasy 16 where prior entries rpg elements felt either watered down or totally stripped away.

I stopped right when I’m supposed to get that trans character and this whole time I thought it was a male but it’s apparently a female? The island water level seems good to look at though.

I’ll be curious what GAF thinks as they press on. I had fun for my 20 hours though but not compelled to go any further.

Seen several developers excitedly talking about how this is a great thing because it allows "more people to play through our game". Publishers like this idea too I'm sure....more people able to finish more likely to get sales from the casuals. I think this one trend is ruining a lot of games that otherwise could've been great.

Coming up on 40 hours played.
Game has really kept my interest and attention. The characters are all very solid and I think for the most part the writing is quite good.
The companion quests are definitely worth doing, and even some of the random side quests ain't half bad.
Having said that, the game does suffer a bit from GoW 2018 syndrome, where it recycles stuff in terms of enemy types and animations. It's not as bad as GoW2018 but it's noticeable.
Sometimes you think by exploring you'll find some new awesome beast to slay..but nope, just another ghost demon thing. Still at about an 8.5-9 / 10 game for me, probably game of the year for me as well.

Just did the 2 dragon mission that they showed at E3 or was it Gamescom? Awesome stuff. Wish the entire game was like this.

Was this the end of Act 2 or Act 1?

I destroyed the bosses because im already level 40 and i think this might have been a mid story mission. Might have to increase the difficulty.

Those types of games feel like nightmare to me.

Maybe there are build options that can mitigate that.

Will check this out eventually, on first sale likely.
There are options, sure, you can make enemies have less HP and/or do more damage, but that wouldn't change the core of the combat, they would die faster, the more dmg they would do wouldn't matter that much, you would still have unlimited healing.

On the other hand, increasing enemy HP, resistances etc. would make them beyond spongy.
Most of the bosses have the same movements and patterns, that said, there are a few bosses where you can see maybe a hint that they were trying for something different in combat design.

53 hours and I still have a ton of stuff to do and it doesnt feel like Im even close to the end.I moved Enemy Aggression to low and combat feels better IMO, not so relentlessly targeted by attacks, gives you a bit more room to breathe. And I sometimes miss the more open vistas of Inquisition, but almost any area here if you take the time to look up and around its very impressive.

fetch a veil expert and a dragon hunter
Cant take the dialogue/story anymore, I'm just skipping it. It's so bad
