Those are not hard to understand if the app has access to internet.

Tried to wrangle 'Sonic Boom 2' game cover art out of it, but it appears the AI isn't trained on Knuckles and Sticks the Badger, not to mention Boom specific details like Amy's clothes and Sonic's scarf. Resulting in decent images marred by a lot of artifacts and strange interpretations of knux & sticks.

Got good result with any prompt that included Frank Frazetta.

You're defending this application so much that you're only seeing it from your own perspective. Think of this from a casual standpoint. You're dealing with knowledge and information that the casual audience who is saying 'this is neat' and trying this tool out, simply isn't aware of. The casual audience is going to look at it very simply: Does it work all the time, does it work half the time, or does it simply not work? That's it. To expect everyone to know what you know to the level that you do, would be the true version of insanity.

From saying that, I still consider the dataset problem a flaw that hopefully will one day be ironed out. I have a feeling that MS is heading in that direction so it's a good thing.

I would fully expect the dataset to become more of an issue not less as time goes on. Companies like Nintendo and Disney will start or continue to fight this, and individual artists with unique styles will also.
Casual people will be amazed that they can type in gorilla farting out a TV in family guy and get something pretty close (fake edit - this is "under review" first time I have seen that). They will be disappointed that Scarlet Johanssen taking a shower gets blocked (or the gorilla fart thing)- not that it doesn't have up to date or specific knowledge on video game characters.
