Playing games counts as work if he gets useful ideas/thoughts out of it. Same thing goes doubly for psychedelic experiences and getting high.
Creative work isn't the same thing as mopping floors or cobalt mining - a visionary is at work whenever they're conscious and occasionally when they're not.
Edison and Dalí both exploited dreaming as a means of coming up with new ideas.
This is why employees don't generally own any IP they come up with at any point while working at a corporation, regardless of where or when the idea comes to them.

Since we are the same age, I'm not surprised he is a gamer as we seem to be at that age when the fledgling console makers started to expand their audience to eventually become more mainstream.
