Final Fantasy 16 Extremely Underperformed On PC; Sold Only 289K Units Since Launch

I find it hilarious how devs think they can dump their trash on PC and expect it to sell.
even 300k more than makes up for the porting cost and gives a nice revenue bump for the quarter. i don't know why people think tech4gamers' is an authority on whether this was a success for Square.

A good game, but it is more like an action game like DMC, It lacks RPG element. This game is the one that they should labeled as Final Fantasy Versus, instead of numbered one. FF numbered must bring back it lighthearted approach and charm. Dark and for mature theme does not suit for FF series.

It is a very bad game with like 3 “best in all of gaming” jaw dropping moments

But 5 peak gaming hours not enough to counter 45 hours of boredom

Like Concord, Horizon Lego, Horizon ZD remaster, and Until Dawn?

I think it's time to admit that the audience on PC and audience on consoles simply dont have the same taste. Plenty of third party games launch on PC day one and we know they max out at 10-15%.
Nah like Helldiver.

Won't be much more than that, as it seems pretty realistic going by Sony's data of PC releases from the Insomniac leak:
"
The data is most likely current as of February 2023 (the slide reads February 6, 2022, but that’s probably a typo since it shows sales of more recent games), so there is no information about titles like The Last of Us Part I (we do know that it sold 368k copies as of April 2023) and Returnal.

  • Horizon Zero Dawn — 3.3 million copies sold (this is up 1 million from the 2.39 million mark previously disclosed by Sony in 2022);
  • God of War — 2.5 million copies sold (as of March 2022, it sold 917k units on PC);
  • Days Gone — 1.7 million copies sold (825k copies sold as of March 2022);
  • Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered — 1.3 million copies sold (in March 2023, the PC version reached 1.5 million copies sold);
  • Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection — 483.2k copies sold;
  • Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales — 450.2k copies sold;
  • Sackboy: A Big Adventure — 62.9k copies sold."

PC sales for Sony games aren't that impactful.

I'm not paying full price for it twice. Once was enough on PS5. will probably pick it up later down the line on sale.

There are two issues. It's not your typical PC game and it won't run on 90% of PCs out their. The PS5 Pro can't even run it at 1080p 60.

I don't know why these results surprise anyone. This is a product that contains FF only in its name, and is not FF in its soul. And it was criticized by FF fans in all regions, it was an attempt to reach a larger audience, as Square Enix themselves wrote, but in the end they scared away old fans and did not attract new people.

It sucked. I hope Square does some soul searching. They should have canceled this turd and just slapped the FF16 name on Octopath 2.

Nitpicking a nitpicker is NOT a crime!

Concord bombed everywhere.
Until Dawn was a remaster of a game that was never well received, even PS owners are shocked that game was remastered.
Lego Horizon......I didnt even know came out, was there a marketing campaign for that game.
Horizon Remastered.......mate, did that sell well anywhere?

That estimate is from 4 months ago when the game was less than 2 months old on PC. It's very likely well over 1 million now, assuming this estimate is even accurate and it probably isn't.

People really think these games would sell a lot day one? They wouldn't...

The biggest audience was on Playstation and they bought it. Final Fantasy currently has bigger issues and more platforms wouldn't solve it.

If this was true then GTA would always be doomed since it never comes out on PC day one, lmao. GTAV should be a flop in there and it isn't. Same for RDR2.

Ghost of Tsushima was released this year on PC. 4 years (!!) after its Playstation release. It got close to 80k CCU which is something plenty games get on day one releases.

Lego Horizon just released on PC day one and...it got 600 CCU. Sounds like it should've been a bigger hit no?

Some of these companies are about to have a wake up call over the next few years. Including Sony if they ever release their first day one single player game on PC expecting 3M sales in there on day one, which plenty of their games sell on PS alone.

PC audiences don't play everything that console audiences do. That's all. Ghost of Tsushima and many of these open world games make sense on PC but not everything will do good numbers in there.

I've said it before but FF16 was Final Fantasy's Metroid Other M. And gave more appreciation for Stranger of Paradise.

I would love for them to remake Dirge of Cerberus with this engine with quality TPS mechanics. That could do pretty well Day 1.

"Well over 1M" is okay-ish for a Playstation game.
Released 4 years later when 90% of the audience already bought it on PlayStation? Might be more than okay, but we can’t know without knowing what Sony was expecting.

So it sold 3.5-4M at full price which is about $200M in revenue plus whatever Sony gave them for the PS5 exclusivity. How much do we think it cost to make?

Not a mega hit but not the flop it’s continually made out to be either.

FF17 launching on PS5, Switch 2 and PC on day 1 can still hit 5 million if the game looks good IMO. Also, similar to Yakuza, they should consider stopping the numbering of the mainline games and go with a subtitle.

Focusing on PS-Switch is the best thing Square Enix can do, it's already clear that their games neither sell nor are well-rated on PC and Xbox,
Dragon Quest III just released and seems to be doing more than well. Being a good game released on day 1 probably has a lot to do with the success it's seeing.

they only ask for it because it's a PS5 exclusive but then they won't buy it.

i feel like people who say this stuff aren't paying attention.

Square obviously feels like it is a huge flop. They don't make Final Fantasy games to sell 4 million units. They don't make these games to make $5 in profit. That is what is important.

SlimySnake

Flashless at the Golden Globes
At ~800K copies on Steam, it sold okay-ish.
it's sold over 10 million on PS4. So 10-15% lines up with other games we see release on PCs.

I thought about adding 'exceptions like black myth' as a qualifier in my post but i hate those qualifiers because i like to trust the knowledge and reading comprehension abilities of fellow gaffers. And while most of the time gaffers do reward my faith in them, there are always exceptions like black_strife.

Next time dont make it exclusive. Day one games sell great on PC despite what some of the dumb echochamber sony fanboys would tell you. Also SE couldnt bait people to buy the game like they did on Sony since most people realized what a shallow game it is after the first few hours.

The prevailing wisdom always used to be RTS, FPS, and sim games you play on PC, console for everything else.

I did buy Final Fantasy VI Pixel Remaster on Xbox though.

Loved FFXVI, the game is great.

Not running too well on mid-range PCs + not releasing on day one = aside few exceptions, it's a recipe for missing sales expectations.
A game of this caliber should do much better than 300k units.

I don't think Sony is expecting all too much from PC sales. Certainly not anywhere close to their console-business.

And since PC Gaf keeps saying how "PC will just wait", I doubt it would make much difference.

Then again, PC isn't their target audiencd, so it makes sense.

Predictable, late port of a game that simply was a mixed bag isn't going to do big numbers.
Just like FF14 on Xbox was a fart.
Square Enix is delusional if they think that multiplatform alone can replace quality, hard work on building the IP over the years, reaching out to new generations of players, understand what they want to be.

It's more than this. How is DD2 selling 2.5, in 11 days across multiplatforms a massive success for Capcom but FF16 doing 3 million in a week on one platform under expectations.

I play final fantasy for the story, i dont buy a final fantasy game 1 year after initial release when i know everything about the story from youtube/twitch, like release it on the same day and i would have bought it.

Budget and expectations. Capcom didn't put many of it's eggs on the DD2 basket, so 3M might be enough for them.
