New update just dropped, 6GB

Google translated patch notes:

Perfect timing for me because I'm gonna finally finish this game tonight, right in time for DD2.
Thanks, I made a seperate thread for it.

Man still can't get over how beautiful Cosmo Canyon is. That was a peak gaming moment for me arriving there and seeing how they've interpreted it and the events.

This game keeps on giving. I'm in shock how huge, varied and detailed the world is.
The way it's interagrated into the open world is insane. I thought the Gold Saucer and Junon would be the most impressive structures in the game but Cosmo Canyon topped them!

So for a fun challenge I decided to do some of the Summon fights at full strength instead of the weaker versions you get by doing the Hot Springs, damn they're still hard as fuck at level 50

One thing I forgot to mention in this thread, the Voice acting is so damn good, aside from strangely Biggs, who feels like the VA literally phoned it in, maybe it was on purpose? But Aerith and Tifa in particular are stand outs, I'm not even gonna start on Sora-ed Xiii

How's the update?

I'm at work and can't try it out.

Since I'm still very early on in the game, fingers crossed that the image is not less blurry.

Man the chapter 12 boss fight made me change the game to easy. I hate the single boss fights it's never balanced well. I have no idea how they expect every day normal people to play these games on anything other than easy.

If you're on normal make sure you're making use of item master, item economizer as well as liberal use of items, should get you through just about anything.

Then again they added a big fat chocobo on these slopes, because in testing people couldn't figure out that they were supposed to climb up with their chocobo. So there is that as well. And playability goes over world cohesion.
I'm hardly shocked. Vertical concrete roads don't like something you'd expect to be able to climb. The obvious problem here is that the design is so illogical and bizarre that no one naturally made the association. What they should have done is redesign them to have clear design legibility within the world. Instead, they just painted great big immersion-breaking prompts on them and said 'job done'. Didn't matter that it made them look even more artificial and out of place than they had previously. They might as well be shrugging and saying 'honestly, we don't give a fuck - look, Barret has a bird on his head and Cloud's being awkward again'.

Though I disagree with there being no conflicts and no internal struggles (Tifa, Barret, Reeves, Aerith and Cloud, even though he doesnt know it quite yet). These are clearly shown in the game (Remake and Rebirth), just not in the same manner that a western author would do it. And yes you are right, these characters don't behave like actual humans. Because they are not supposed to. Thats very deeply ingrained into japanese and often chinese, korean, etc. character writing. You dont watch anime to watch a subdued exploration of the human condition. Thats just not how they do things. Everything is hyper realistic, meaning over the top and to the most extreme. Everyone is super hot and super good or super bad, etc. You dont have to like it, but its a valid style to write characters and explore them (mostly based on the psychology popularized by Carl Jung). Its different, not necessarily worse.

20th-century Japanese literature was all about that slow-burning pensive subtlety - Ishikawa Jun, Junichiro Tanizaki, Yuko Tsushima, Yukio Mishima, Soseki; it reflected the conservative and understated social norms of their culture itself. The writing in Final Fantasy VII is that odd blend of anime and Western traditions that leans too heavily on tropes, over-exposition and plot-driven characters to ever be more than a sideshow. It leaves you with one-dimensional characters who cling unflinchingly to their remit, even to the point of absurdity, bad guys that are too bad to ever be taken seriously, and situations so absurd as to drain the plot of any serious investment from the player.

Their lack of imagination and talent in developing the world and its characters is honestly mind-numbing. Such a ripe world with such rich and complex themes and they turned it into a static amusement park bereft of stakes or tension and loaded with mascots, middling derivative gameplay and trivial diversions.

15 hours in and I haven't even got through the swamps.

I'm fine just exploring the world, doing quests and most of all taking on the battle intel missions.

The combat for me, once again, it just steals the show. It's just so fucking damn good.

Question: In Remake you could switch between Operator and Punisher modes while holding R1 or am I imagining things?

That's my main issue so far. Because now, if you press triangle while holding R1, you do the synergy skill instead. Don't like that and I'm having a hard time getting used to it.

Sheesh, that chapter 9 boss was a veritable spike! It took me 5 or 6 attempts, and I just about beat it by the skin of my teeth.

You could switch back and forth in Remake while blocking (with R1) but now you can't do things like roll or dodge while blocking in Punisher mode because it will use the synergy skill. You can block (for counter attacks), use synergy skills, and that's it. You lose a lot of mobility in Punisher mode.

170h and still can't get enough of this fucking game.

170 hours is crazy. I think I just hit 48 hours today and I play pretty much every day. Back when The Witcher 3 released I had 42 hours in the first 3 days and I still had to work and sleep. I can't have long gaming sessions anymore. My eyes get tired and I get headaches if I go longer than like 4 hours.

And they made him a Lord of Cinder. Not for virtue, but for might. Such is a lord, I suppose. But here I ask. Do we have a sodding chance?

I played 13h every day for 11 days straight and pretty much 100%'d the game at that point. The remaining 30 hours has been spent on me fooling around with different builds and character combinations in VR.

This, together with Demon's Souls and RE4R truly are my games of this generation - they're so good I can't really understand it at times.

Edit: since many people have asked me what my other 10/10 titles are, these are pretty much it:

Isn't it funny though, how every title besides Third Strike has gotten a remake? I truly am living in the best of timelines.

Ya know what. I'm just gong to say it. This game is tedious as fuck. If it weren't wrapped up in FFVII, Im not sure it would be praised the way it has.

And FFXVI was more fun to play.

Whew. That feels better.
I kinda agree. The nostalgia is what made me enjoy it (some of the music almost had me in tears, as it bring back so many memories from the childhood).
Also seeing the locations in a modern way was very cool. But if i'm taking the nostalgia out of it, I actually think I would have bounced of the game and not finishing it.
It's a step up from the incredible boring part 1 (remake), but the game is nowhere near the original FF7 for me.
The last couple of chapters was mostly a tedious drag for me.

I’m on Chapter 11 and I feel the same way. Seeing old classic moments from the original redone with better writing and presentation can be really cool, but the game itself is a massive slog. I’m forcing myself to finish it because I want to see where the story goes, but I would’ve bowed out like 15 hours ago if not for the nostalgia.

The open world is killing me, there is nothing to do aside from the Ubisoft check list content, no Hunt Mark, no exploration, "let me paint a huge chocobo with arrows on that wall or u may get lost", combat feels a mess, for now the game inst clicking :(

just a psa for people overwhelmed by minigames, I won't tell you they're optional or you can come back and do them later because you must know that already, but it might help you to know you can temporarily set the game difficulty to "easy" under system in the menu and it will make minigames easier/faster to finish without penalty, then when you want to go back to the game proper you can restore the difficulty setting to your preferred challenge

Journalist difficulty 😏. I wonder how these players feel when they can't lower the difficulty of unavoidable bike/snowboard/dolphin jump sequence on the original game

I feel the exact same way. That’s precisely my sentiment.

Dayum last boss of queens blood is nuts. Almost had her a couple of times by putting king tonberry in the middle and replacing him with gi nattak so tonberry's score goes to the cards above and below him

yeah, I didn't feel much of a difference on the lower settings because zanzekuken is what makes him tough and zanzekuken insta-kills either way

I beat him by using phoenix to cast reraise on everybody but it still took a couple of goes

Yea? Unfortunately the hits you take before he triggers his Zentetsuken isn't increased. What makes it worse that his hits counts towards non controlled members too.

He took my whole gaming session, probably took 4 hours to beat his ass.

I find this to be an issue with meat popular games in last few years. It’s all tuned to be souls streamer difficulty. People who play games constantly.

And it’s so tiresome. Ff16 had somewhat better difficulty curve on normal and was a game I didn’t feel the need to lower the difficulty. Hogwarts was also god this way. And both of these are criticised for being too easy which is mad since they were just right and actually playable without swearing like many new gestures are. It’s like good enjoyable design is thrown out of the window in order to appease difficulty masochists

And you are absolutely right. Everyone got blinded by 30fps debate lol woke the game got serious story and gameplay problems.
16 is a honest effort to do new different game and it avoided that open world tedious crap.

I mean, the game is no where near "souls streamer difficulty". Not even close. You have gone on record stating that you didn't fully understand numerous mechanics, which is where your issues lay. Proper managment of materia and the synergystic effects, proper gearing, and managing atb gauges across all 3 party members and your issues with any boss on normal will no longer be an issue.

And yes, XVI was too easy. It was one of the universal constants between fans and haters of that game.

I don't agree with his claim that FF16 was better to play but he's absolutely correct that nostalgia goggles are putting in a lot of work with the game.

I enjoyed the hell out of it (especially the music) but if we take the FF7 title off it people would be (rightfully) shitting on it for open world repetition and "Ubisoft-style" open world tropes (like towers to 'discover' map locations). A large portion of this game is pure padding. Most of it is enjoyable, sure. Doesn't make it any less padding.

I don’t think it was too easy. You do have to pay a ton of attention and play l skilfully. You get more powerful with new powers which is great. 16 was very enjoyable.

And rebirth is not souls levels. No. I found souls less frustrating and more fun to overcome the challenges.
Here they stunlock and bosses have ton of hp.
And while I didn’t utilise 100% of mechanics, I do think I utilised most and played really well. But you do have to be sweating in the later chapters. Come on I didn’t use deshell on the turtle and you fight 2 in the whole game. And I wasn’t good at parrying but it sucks and in fights that demand it, I had no problem doing like rufus or the bike guy.

And I hate the argument that I played the game wrong. You know that’s bs. I play games my whole life and finished the game in normal just fine. It was just a chore in later chapters. And it’s not my fault if they didn’t explain me or direct me to use 100% of mechanics.

But also, a good rpg should be playable in my style.
