For the entirety of last gen up until now, Naughty Dog hasn't created a single new IP.

The entire PS4 gen and the first 2 years of the PS5, Naughty Dog has not given us a new game series. It really shows the direction they are going in, and may explain some of the...content that's been inserted in a few of their recent games, as well as some of their recent decisions, one of which upcoming is a bit controversial.

While they never owned Crash they were eager to start a new series taking what they've learned and created the Jak and Daxter franchise. While the last Jak did overlap with Uncharted iirc, it was passing of the torch. While Uncharted started out as a clone of another game instead of taking what they learned from jak, it was still a new experience, a third person action game that was grounded in reality and not in sensationalism like their previous titles.

Starting with Uncharted 2, the culture at naughty Dog changed along with their game design, going for a Hollywood cinnamic action flick style over substance storyline and game design. Millions flocked to see the "Hollywood blockbuster of gaming" and Naughty Dog has kept to this formula ever since.

Uncharted passed the torch to The Last Of Us, but didn't stop their, Uncharted 4 was made afterward in an unusual action for the company to squeeze whatever was still left in the franchise and then finally completely giving the reigns to TLOU. But TLOU came out on the PS3 in 2013.

So since 2013, until now, 9 years and counting, Naughty Dog has not given us a single new series. With the third release of the first TLOU and a new MP GaaS entry, this may be another gen where Naughty Dog avoid creating a new IP.

Riding along with this is also a change of culture at Naughty Dog, the staff are...different, the priorities have changes, they seem to have social problems, and their communication with fans is lacking to say the least.

But I find it pretty sad that Naughty Dog has deformed so much over the years, that now they are ripping people off poorly communicating their plans with fans on their upcoming releases, and don't seem to be interested in ambition anymore.

look at rockstar. they haven't made a new IP in who the fuck knows how long. in the xbox/ps2 era they were getting weird with stuff like The Warriors (amazing game) and Bully. Now they are just begging 14 year olds to borrow their moms credit card and buy shark cards. AAA games industry is trash.

You can’t really put it in years due to longer development times. There were 2 game releases (Uncharted 2-3) with no new IP, then they came out with The Last Of Us. Now there has been 2 releases (Uncharted 4, Last of Us 2) with no new IP. Looking to the future, it looks like it will be 3 releases (Uncharted 4, Last of Us 2, Last of Us 2 Multiplayer) before they come out with their new IP. One could also argue Last of Us Remake, but the development timeline started with the Day’s Gone studio and then from what I’ve heard it’s mostly newer people put on the development in order to get trained up.

I know. We're in the age of stagnation. The age of franchises. Naughty Dog use to be one new franchise per gen studio. The PS3 era was amazing because they grew Uncharted from being an OK Tomb Raider/Gears clone to the gold standard of single player action adventure games over three installments. Then instead of taking a break they gave us another mindblowing standalone new IP in TLOU. Then last gen they just coasted on their success. I mean I enjoyed the 2 Uncharteds and TLOU2 but I couldn't help but wish they'd move on already. Now they're gonna charge 70s bucks for a remaster nobody asked for, game that was ALREADY remastered last gen. Their next new IP better kick fucking ass.

Drunk the Man is directing a new IP as far as i understood. And creating new IPs are risky. Make the math at how long Rockstar dont create a new IP. Naughtydog is actually one of the studios that more risks take by creating new IPs. They just took advantage of the sucess Unchared and TLOU had by creating sequels. as they should.

Welcome to AAAA development.

They basically rebooted Uncharted 4 and shipped it 2 years after "creative differences" with Amy Hennig and TLoU2 is one of the most meticulously crafted games of all time.

When I look around the room at developers not innovating, I'm not worried about Naughty Dog. They're aces in my book.

Ridiculous thread.
You can swap Naughty Dog's name with most of the AAA studios around but it has to be ND for...reasons? :messenger_tears_of_joy:
They created two amazing new IPs during the PS3 gen, did you expect them to abandon those??? Who would have done that?
It's obvious they created sequels.
It is already confirmed by Druckmann that they're working on something totally new and the multiplayer game they're creating has also become a full standalone experience, it's basically something they have never done before and it's not even clear if it will carry the TLOU name.

Yup, welcome to AAA, AAA+, AAAA or whatever new term they come up with, I've been telling you guys, the future of the industry is with Indies and AA games, otherwise it's the same cinematic gameplay bullshit everytime, I'm not saying every big budget game will be shit but creativity and new ideas are just no longer there.

That's really silly.

During the PS1 era they only came up with one IP.

PS2 - 1 IP

PS3 - first time they came up with 2 IP and it wasn't until the very end of the generation.

PS4 - no new IPs, but they expanded into MP for the first time since Jak X. As many have said, games take way more time to develop now, especially these AAA games. LOU2 for all the criticism it gets is an absolutely massive experience for a single player AAA game today.

History has also forced this pattern historically. They didn't have the rights to Crash, so they made Jak. The first game was really successful but the subsequent games showed clear decline in popularity. Last of Us and obvious Uncharted showed more staying power and overall success.

Insomniac had a similar pattern for the most part too, but their IP haven't had the success that ND has had.

Spyro.... didn't own the rights... Ratchet and Clank.... Resistance (unsuccessful ultimately)... various other IP/smaller budget games that weren't successful. Spider-Man an IP they don't own.

Sucker Punch - Sly Cooper, waning popularity and success, infamous, waning popularity and success, Ghost of Tsushima... they might not have a brand new IP this gen due to GoT2.

Naughty Dog has expanded to the point where they can probably work on a new IP again while maintaining their existing IP to a degree. There's also some waning popularity in LOU.

Yep. Part 2 development fucked up Naughty Dog pretty bad.

If they announce a new Uncharted. I will lose interest (even more than I already am).

So,I hope they announce a New IP.

I like new IPs as much as anyone but I don't think it's wise to FORCE a new IP whenever you wanted.

Last of Us was brewing in the mind of Neil for a long time. Maybe even during the PS2 era.

A studio not creating new IPs for 9 years is hardly unheard of in this industry right now, specially since Naughty Dog specializes in games that take god knows how long to make now. Lil Crash and Jak games are long gone.

Plus, like it or not, Uncharted and TLOU are more successful than anything Naughty Dog did before...creating a new IP is always a risk.

keep relaying in one IP is a risk as well.

Is crazy to think that ND made 4 AAA (2 brand New IPs) games on PS3.

They made UC4 and TLOU2, which make total sense from a business and creative point of view. UC4 was their swansong, gearing them up to move on to different series. TLOUII was Druckmann's vanity project, but unfortunately, it seems to have kicked off their "TLOU" phase. With TLOU remake and TLOU: Factions, as well as the upcoming TLOU TV show, it seems likely they'll be the "TLOU devs" for most of this gen before dropping their latest IP at the end of this one. I believe they're currently working on an original IP, a FP game, if rumours are to be believed.

also hiring more blue haired soy boys than ever before

No wonder they’re not what they used to be
Dont know what u mean by "they are not what they used to be", when they last game has the reccord for most GOTY awards ever, with more than 300 awards. Even if was not my personal GOTY, the quality was there and much above anything else they did before.

You're crazy if you think Naughty Dog is ending Uncharted.

Yeah it sucks.

They use to kick off every gen with a new IP. Then we got a whole gen of just sequels, now we are 2 years into the Ps5 and we are getting the most unnecessary remake ever and then even more TLOU next year (maybe?)

I'm expecting Naughty Dog to reveal a new IP any second in response to this thread. Naughty Dog and Sony are after some easy cash, but also there is a bit of a George Lucas thing going on with constantly editing and changing old work (Last of Us). In the case of Last of Us, I'm expecting all this work will result in third entry to complete the trilogy.

Naughty Dog and Sony are wise not to announce something so early. Uncharted 4, was different and a different time. Naughty Dog is a relatively small team, I think people forget that.

I wish Naughty Dog would remake Uncharted Golden Abyss for PS5 and we can see more of a young drake adventures, but that's just me. I'm still holding out hope for a Nathan Drake and Lara Croft team up adventure.

I would expect if we looked at Santa Monica studio, it would be the same. Off the top of my head it's been God of War for how long? Not sure what the OP is expecting here, without knowing what's cooking in the background.

They already announced a new ip.

Also it takes more talent and time to make games now. Games dont sell with PS3 level graphics and scope.

Not when that IP probably gave Sony more money than anything else this studio has produced. TLOU2 getting its money back with preorders alone and its first 3 days on sale is huge. With a tv show coming, this only makes sense tbh.
Betting on TLOU is not a risk, it's their safest bet if anything.

So....do you expect ND to become a 343i then?

A new IP is already in development...i don't see the issue. Creating 5 IPs in 5 console generations is more than okay and nothing like 343i.
Besides, to be like 343i the games couldn't be as good as Naughty Dog's, lol.
An entire generation without a new IP is kind of an issue. that Is the point. is not the end of the world.

They better be actually making an new IP. cuz TLOU IP is tainted (even though Faction has the potential to be huge - not because of TLOU but because of the setting and type of game ) and going back to Uncharted.... yikes.

As a get more old I enjoy a lot less ND style of games. Technically aside (cause they have the money, talent and time) I find U4 almost boring, and the writing in TLOU2 is despicable.

I want new IP and gameplay FIRST games with a lot less pretentious writing.

Just about all big studios churn out sequels now.

But the key difference is Sony is no different than MS and Nintendo now. Most of their big sellers are sequels, whereas so far in this new gen there's been no big IPs yet. And because dev time takes longer it makes it look like they are sticking to familiar franchises for even longer. Back in the PS2 and PS3 era, they churned out new titles all the time.
