Former Arkane dev: Dishonored 2 cost more than Skyrim and sold worse, but its reputation/quality saved the studio from being closed by Bethesda

Dishonored 2—one of the best immersive sims ever made—did not sell as well as a game of its pedigree or impressiveness really deserved. And if it wasn't for the reputation of the series, which offered it a "seal-of-quality protection", and Arkane's history of arguably making Bethesda's "most refined games", the studio might not be around today.

This is according to former Arkane Lyon designer Julien Eveillé, who started as a QA on Dishonored 2 before joining the design team for the series' final game Dishonored: Death of the Outsider. Despite being a superb follow-up, it similarly did not have the impact both Arkane and Bethesda might have hoped for.

"It was a bit strange and weird," he says. "I think when Bethesda was looking at the numbers, they thought, OK, Skyrim sold so much. And it cost less than Dishonored 2 to make. So they were asking questions. From an executive spend standpoint, it makes sense to ask those questions of, 'Why should we keep going with you?' But we knew that we had a kind of seal-of-quality protection, making what would maybe be considered the most refined games of the whole Bethesda catalogue."

Certainly, Dishonored had a very different level of refinement when compared to Skyrim, and the rest of the Elder Scrolls series. Bethesda's RPGs also have some immersive sim qualities, being massive sandboxes where players are given a lot of leeway in terms of how they interact with the world. But where Skyrim was a wonderful, janky playground, Dishonored took a more precise approach to its chaos, with stricter rules but just as much potential for mayhem.

This reputation "kind of saved the studio," says Eveillé. But he also notes how studio director Dinga Bakaba stepped up and gave "confidence back to the upper management" following the departure of founder Raphael Colantionio, who left to create WolfEye Studios. At the time, the folks at Arkane wanted to focus on what the studio was known for, rather than chasing trends like live service games. This ended up being critical to the "future success of the studio," he reckons.

While Arkane Lyon went on to make Deathloop and is now working on Blade, its American studio, Arkane Austin, was not so lucky. It unfortunately did get saddled with a live service game, Redfall, which had a disastrous launch that ultimately culminated in the closure of the studio that gave us the phenomenal Prey.

Eveillé eventually left Arkane and, just last year, released his immersive horror game Threshold—an extremely stressful experience that will leave you fatally short of breath.

Dishonored Series is my favorite games of all time (see my profile banner). Checks all the boxes for me for how an insanely fun game should be:

Interesting lore and settings, mature story, stylish art and vibe, delicately crafted level/sandbox, creative super powers, and sheer freedom for completing task.

Still bitter that the rumored Dishonored 3 turned out to be a Marvel game.

You can't die before your death
That's a stupid comparison.

- Scope: Skyrim: Vast, open world. Dishonored 2: Focused, handcrafted levels.
-Gameplay: Skyrim: Broad RPG systems. Dishonored 2: Deep stealth & powers.
-Story: Skyrim: Loose, optional. Dishonored 2: Structured, impactful choices.
-Focus: Skyrim: Exploration & role-playing. Dishonored 2: Stealth, creativity, player choice.

Unfortunately Arkane has never had a hit game. Hopefully Blade can rectify that.
I didn't even know they were working on a Blade game, but Arkane these days is basically a shell of the studio once was.
Maybe they still have some talent or have found new one, but most of the people who contributed to create their "classics" have left a long time ago.

X360/PS3 gen vs PS4/Xone gen.

Thats why dev costs are higher.

Though, still surprising Skyrim cost less than D2. Game is loaded with interesting scenarios. I guess creation engine gives them a lot of advantage?

They got a potential hit with Blade. A lot is riding on it. I believe it is their first third person game. Hopefully they succeed.

The history between Arkane and Bethesda makes me bitter -- there was a plausible claim on this very forum that Bethesda's Zenimax leadership deliberately weakened the studio financially through dubious tactics in order to acquire them. Its unfortunate they've befallen to Bethesda's and now Microsoft's mercy.

The Paris setting and seemingly cartoony/stylised look is kind of a weird choice though. Really seems like they're reusing assets from a prior ditched project. That said, the studio seems to be a talented bunch. Hope they manage to do well and it works out for them.

Funny because slop is what defines Skyrim. Dishonored 2 is away superior to 1.

Oh cmon jesus christ, slop? Fuck off man.

Hyperbole much

Probably weren't even gaming during the Skyrim release days I bet. There was nothing like it on the market.

Calling dishonored 2 slop is even bigger hyperbole. Some of the densest most creative levels in all of gaming. Skyrim IS slop in comparison. It's the kind of game only idiot normies can enjoy. It's filled with filler, and the most cliched forgettable story

Shouldn't have released the game in such an awful state on PC then, it's a great game but took 3 to 4 months and a few patches to get in any sort of playable state, it's a shame, i would love a Dishonored 3, hope it happens.

There would be a lof of mismanagement if true. They already had most of the mechanics and powers ready from 1. The levels obviously required a lot of manpower (especially the shifting mansion and switching between timelines), but they weren't insanely big.

What a retarded comparison. Your benchmark is Skyrim sales numbers, really? Skyrim sold 60 million copies for fuck's sake, you know how many games sold less than that?

wtf is this?
If you're costing me more than my ultimate mega-hit, then you better deliver success or else.

They are lucky they weren't closed imo. Especially after Prey flopped as well.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
Well, yes. Dishonored 2 was a further ahead gen game, Skyrim was a PS3/360 game.

A new TES game being made right now will cost a hell of a lot more than Dishonored 2, for comparison.

I guess those games never really sold bangers, such a shame, please as a last goodbye patch Dishonored 2 and Death of the Outsider to 60fps on consoles, I just finished Prey again on Xbox and it is such a delight to play it with FPS Boost.

My favorite Stealth related game even though I don't do stealth very well and mostly fight with the guards. I always tweak the setting so all the corpses stay and don't despawn allowing me to have a huge piles of dozens upon dozens of corpses throughout a level.

Question Mark What GIF by MOODMAN

Especially at the time released, there were not many games that were as good as Skyrim.

Now you can say oh its not good, but it actually was good. Not sure why the weird revisionist history.
