Former Arkane dev: Dishonored 2 cost more than Skyrim and sold worse, but its reputation/quality saved the studio from being closed by Bethesda

Dishonored is better than any Bethesda game, but Skyrim has the normie/dudebro appeal, of course it sells more.

Question Mark What GIF by MOODMAN

Especially at the time released, there were not many games that were as good as Skyrim.

Now you can say oh its not good, but it actually was good. Not sure why the weird revisionist history.

lmao

Arcane should be lucky to still be around. I don’t think their games sell a lot and going by the dev they cost more to make than probably everyone thought.

Chances are their games make hardly any profit or might even be loss leaders.

Typically poor performing products or depts get gutted in business unless it’s some kind of halo product really needed in deals involving other great selling and profitable products (package deal). But I don’t a get sense a gamer will buy a Bethesda game based on an Arkane game. If so, Arkane games would be great sellers.

Similar to the modern Deus Ex team being given Guardians of the Galaxy (an immersive sim developer being given Marvel IP), I expect Blade to be a game better than it needs to be, but ultimately won't be the massive hit the publisher wanted.

Cores, shaders and BIOS oh my!
Niche games should probably not have high requirements, I remember I didn't even enjoy the first Dishonored until I upgraded my PC & loved it, 2 was too much for my CPU I think (yet I'm still using that CPU, lol, very few games don't run on it decently until recently, it's time I look to upgrade).

Edit: actually it might have been before my last upgrade that I tried it back then, lol, I should probably try it again to see if the requirements on the store page are correct for good performance/visuals, I'm just below the recommended (3770K instead of 4770) and definitely better GPU after all.

Tbf, dish2 still look good even today .

Bethesda the publisher and developer are not the same, they have nothing to do with Indiana jones
Todd Howard was producer in Indi, no?

Either ways, I see a lot of design elements shared between Bethesda games.

How did Machine Games came up with Indiana Jones otherwise.

I enjoyed the first Dishonored. I bought the second but haven't gotten around to playing it yet. Shame to hear they were on the edge of closure.

I remember playing Arx Fatalis, way back in the early Xbox days. That was one of theirs, too. I really got into that game. I still hear the tune from it play in my head, usually when I'm in a stairwell for whatever reason.

What do they have coming up next? I have lost track.

Console versions unfortunately did not help, this and Prey ran terribly on release. Dishonored 2 is one of the most brilliant games ever made and did not get the recognition it deserves. Clockwork Mansion is the most mind blowing and intricately designed area I have ever seen in a game.
Really looking forward to Wolfeye's next game.

I'm looking forward to finding out more about Ralph Colantonio's new game after all he was the founder, Ceo and creative director of Arkane, so Dishonored was down to him, i suspect i will like his new game a lot.

If they release it on everything day one then it has a chance. No staggered release bullshit like Indy.

Just completed a 100% run of this for the platinum trophy on PS4/5 version, man what a masterpiece it is. I was engrossed in the world from the get go. The artstyle, the grim and depressing atmosphere of the city was amazing.

While the story was impressive and the gameplay loop felt great, the real star of the show was the level design. In particular the level with the time machine / mirror thing was insane, I can only imagine how much effort that took to create. I really do hope we get more of this in the future so we get more of the city itself to explore.

The platty run was also very enjoyable, Can't believe I left this in the backlog so long, I crave more, maybe time to revisit the original game even though it looks a little dated now.

does this devteam still exist? I wonder what they are working on now, its been a while since deathloop which I also enjoyed

Unfortunate, given how mediocre the Elder Scrolls games are in comparison (bolded for the sake of the easily triggered)..

So any game which sells less than Skyrim is a failure in Bethesda's books? Gotcha.
Development and marketing cost certain amount of $. They either didn’t recoup that with sales (very likely) or barely broke even thus losing out on opportunity cost.

From business perspective unfortunately Immersive Sims just don’t seem to sell which is a huge shame since I love the genre.

The Dishonored games are masterpieces from a systems and gameplay perspective.

BUT

They suffer big time from their story and setting. I’ve played all of the Dishonored games, and I still struggle to explain the world and characters to anyone who wants to play. Especially “the outsider” and all of the dark magical powers. Then mix that with a semi-steam punk/ plague-ridden vaguely English setting and you have a big ol’ bowl of what-the-fuck-is-this?

Some of the original creative talent behind Dishonored and Prey are Wolfeye Studios now. They released Weird West, which is basically a top-down (perspective) immersive sim. It doesn't really live up to their previous work and is pretty low budget but I believe it was their first project after reforming after leaving Arkane. Their new game is more along the lines of Dishonored, a first person immersive sim.

Just because the game costs more, doesnt mean more effort or better. Look what Concord did with 200mil budget. Balatro budget was someones lunch money and it made almost the same profit as Sihonored 2 after less than a year. It has never been about how much money you throw at a game, guy sounds salty why his stuff never went viral.
