Former Nintendo PR Explains Why Switch Games Rarely Go on Sale: ‘This Isn’t Ubisoft’

Nintendo: please buy our expensive games
Sony: please buy our next remaster of The Last of Us
Xbox: please don't buy our games or consoles

There Fans get what they Deserve.

At this point why stop there? They might as well increase the price by $10 every year a game is out. Its not like Nintendo Fanboys wont all lap it up when there not busy snobishly telling everyone else how genius the decision is. "You can bring a Horse to water".... and all that.

Nintendo are protecting the value of their games? Is that what we're using as a defence now. Lol.

This is the sort of attitude that gives Nintendo the licence to exploit their fans.

It's been a defence for decades. And it's true.

Most other games are greatly devalued by being on sale fairly soon after release and at ever increasing lower prices. Yet they still cost the same amount to make and should they not still have roughly the same value?

You don't often find sales on other media that soon after release, and rarely as frequently.

A licence to a copy (which is what you are buying with all media) isn't like a car where it's value lowers due to deterioration.

Do worry guys. Most of us don't realize we have all Nintendo consoles and games already. It's called your PC. Not only that you have some PC ports as well!

1) None of this is new information.

2) If you don't want it or don't like it, you don't have to buy it.

3) Gaming is and always has been an expensive hobby.

4) Nobody owes you anything.

Considering Mario, Zelda, DK, MK, Animal Crossing, Pokemon are all still going strong years later Id say they know what they are doing.

Its ok not to like it.

This is such an odd take. Do you know anything about business?

You never give something away for free or very little when you don't have to. It's Economics 101. Supply and demand.

They did Player's Choice and Nintendo Selects because their older games stopped selling and they wanted to make additional revenue from late adopters. Hence, they discounted games because making $20 is better than making $0. None of that is relevant now. Mario Kart 8 has sold 60+ million copies at $60 and most of that without discounting. Switch doesn't need Nintendo Selects to sell software, therefore they aren't doing it. That's it. It's not a conspiracy. This is not hard. 🤷‍♂️

Games are devalued by going on sale? We're talking about games, not investments like property. Lord, have mercy! People really treat Nintendo like a religion.

What? Sorry, I really don't understand the above. You do find other media going on sale soon after release (I'm not sure what the timeframe has to do with anything here?) All the time.

The cult of Nintendo is strong. As an example, your assumption is that I dislike Nintendo games because I'm critical of Nintendo. Far from it. I love Nintendo games.

Except modern Pokemon. Gamefreak are lazy as fuck and their output on the Switch has been dire.

Yes. I need to as part of my employment.

I never suggested this. There are however business reasons why games go on sale, even if they're massive sellers. For example, Hogwarts Legacy has been a smash hit, but has been on sale a number of times. Why would such a massive hit go on sale 🤔

Who said anything about a conspiracy.

Nintendo games do on sale. They have sales in the E shop. They're games are never full RRP online. I picked up Tears of the Kingdom for £35 last year from Amazon.

They just don't on sale as often.

Sorry bud, I meant not liking their pricing model. Not games.

And yes, after a year and a halfish they do go on sale.

Of course games going on sale devalues them. If you know that the latest Ass Creed is going to be £40 in a couple of months, you'll wait.

It still cost the same amount of time, effort, and money to make though.

As for Nintendo games being sold cheaply, often that is retailers being willing, for various reasons, to make less or or take a loss on them.

Do you dislike sales? Would you prefer games sell at full price all the time, or have rare, tiny discounts.

There are many reasons why publishers put their games on sale. For example, a discount increases sales numbers for a start. Games are a competitive market and offering a discount equals more sales, which is better then none at all.

Nintendo however do not do this because they want to maintain a premium image. They do put their games on sale on the eshop, but the discounts aren't that great and they're rare.
