LOVE me some Sega Genesis. I can only do a quick list of 5 though for now, in no particular order:

Phantasy Star IV
Quackshot
MUSHA
Gaiares
Rolling Thunder 2

Many, many more I left out. Such a badass system.

1. Sonic 3 and Knuckles
2. Sonic the Hedgehog
3. Dashin' Desperadoes
4. Streets of Rage 2
5. Tiny Toon Adventures: Buster's Hidden Treasure
6. Dynamite Headdy
7. The Addams Family
8. Gunstar Heroes
9. Contra Hard Corps
10. Rocket Knight Adventures

Wonderful console.

My first console and one of have probably spend thousands of hours on through the years, so this is super influenced by nostalgia.

1. Mortal Kombat 2
2. Streets of Rage 2
3. Sparkster
4. NBA Jam
5. Mickey Mania
6. Sonic the Hedgehog
7. Golden Axe
8. Gunstar Heroes
9. Revenge of Shinobi
10. Quarkshot

Really awesome console overall, I could easily make a top 20. I have always been in love with the Mega Drive sound chip and good music goes a long way.

  1. Castlevania: Bloodlines - Probably my favourite "classic" style Castlevania, in spite of it not adhering to the old formula all that well. It was the first time where the level design and mechanics clicked with me for the series. It's probably the Mega Drive game I've played the most.
  2. Gunstar Heroes - I'm usually not big into Contra-style run and gun types of games, but Gunstar Heroes knows how to make me ignore my genre biases. It's hard and fast, and keeps you on your toes. Definitely one of the most exciting titles on the system.
  3. Monster World IV - I don't know if this one is cheating, since I technically didn't play this game until it got ported to another system. I do adore it though. It's a platformer with an interesting world, cute mechanics and a relaxed and pleasant mood.
  4. Rocket Knight Adventure - Creative, fast and varied. Basically everything I liked about Gunstar Heroes, but poured into a more traditional platformer mould, and dialled the cuteness factor to 11.
  5. Cosmic Spacehead - Not sure if a lot of people have played this one, but it's an experimental hybrid between a platformer and point and click adventure. The game is weird and silly, but it's part of its charm.
  6. Revenge of Shinobi - This game is pretty much what I expected from a next generation "Ninja Gaiden". It's got a steep learning curve, but once you get a feel for it, it's pretty fair.
  7. Strider - Pretty good port of the arcade game, which is such an easy game to pick up and play and have a great time with. Strider's big gimmick is that every wall surface is climbable, and it's fun and cool from start to finish.
  8. Beyond Oasis - It was sold to me as "Zelda on SEGA", and while I see some similarities, I think it does enough of its own to stand by itself in the action adventure genre.
  9. Tiny Toon Adventures: Buster’s Hidden Treasure - I only discovered this one last year, and I couldn't put it down. While simple and traditional, the game plays well and is a lot of fun.
  10. Scooby Doo Mystery - The second point and click adventure game in my list, on a system that really isn't known for these types of games. Well, it's on here anyway, because I love Scooby Doo and this is in my opinion the best Scooby game out there. The series is a great fit for the genre, and this one in particular proves why. A good mystery, a spoopy location, and a fake monster is all I need.
EDIT
Looks like I forgot a game I really like, so the last in my list gets demoted to honourable mention:
World Of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse And Donald Duck - I originally wasn't a huge fan of this game until I played it in co-op. The game is gorgeous, and uses co-operative elements in ways that you just didn't see at the time. The game is still fine in single-player, but it didn't really do enough to leave an impression.

Streets Of Rage 2 - The grand champion - all it was missing were the team moves from SoR1, and the planned ability to play Shiva in Versus ode, really
Strider - It was amazing to see Strider Hiryu move in all sorts of inclined surfaces and hanging from stuff, and the whole game was composed of amazing moments. Maskless Hiryu is the best.
Sonic The Hedgehog - A worthy representative of what the Megadrive was capable of. It managed to get a lot of mileage out of simple controls and mechanics, and even if the game was meant to show off speed but got slowed down for the European version, in a couple of cases that made the music better.
Shadow Dancer - Classic. Simple mechanics supporting amazing set pieces. Who cares if your ninja and his dog aren't looking stealthy when the very first thing you deal with is the whole damn city on fire and cracking in half with earthquakes, not to mention later stuff like the Statue of Liberty level.
Castle Of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse - Simple, pretty, fun, and the last boss is called Mizrabel, what's not to like?
Street Fighter ll: Special Championship Edition - This one took a lot of time to reach the Megadrive, so it was nice that it basically provided both Champion Edition and Turbo.
Fatal Fury - I enjoyed this while waiting for SF, but it was pretty fun to play with friends as you could use all the bosses in that mode, even Geese, even if sometimes matches degenerated into "slide wars" (mostly using Joe, Duck King and Geese)
Revenge of Shinobi - I still prefer Shadow Dancer in this series, but hey, you fight Spiderman, Batman and Godzilla
Road Rash - I actually don't remember the gameplay differences between RR 1 and 2 that well, but I enjoyed the game and its concept, so mentioning the 1st one by default.
Might And Magic: Gates To Another World - I never got to finish this one, but it still amazes me how detailed the manual was (as in, every map was there), and yet playing through it the world seemed inconceivably large and beyond understanding, even if it wasn't graphically impressive.

Honorable mentions:
Alisia Dragoon - I didn't actually get to play this, but my GF likes it, so mentioning it for her
Quackshot - this looked so damn good
Greendog - neat environments and incredibly chill music
Michael Jackson’s Moonwalker - loved the music, great use of the regular moves to trigger events in the stages, especially when used as alternatives to the game's magic system, which actually consumed your life bar
Micro Machines - I was never much into racing games, but this got to be fun once I got to grips with the controls.

Madden and Live woulda dominated my list. EA sport games played so much better on Sega consoles vs Nintendo's.

For some reason I only played Temco sport games on Nintendo consoles.

It isn't until I stop to think back about all of the really incredible games that I enjoyed on the Genesis, that I realize I may have liked it more than the SNES. It's close.

1) Phantasy Star II - this game is what started me on RPGs (the music in this game omg)
2) Gunstar Heroes
3) Ghouls and Ghosts
4) Shadow Dancer
5) Shining Force 2
6) Sonic the Hedgehog 2
7) Herzog Zwei
8) Streets of Rage 2
9) Flashback: Quest for Identity
10) Mutant League Football

there are a lot of other games that I really enjoyed which didn't make it, like NHL 94, NBA Jam, some jet fighter game with a first person view i can never remember the name of (you fight a red boss jet on most levels), Forgotten Worlds, Golden Axe, Eternal Champions, Ecco, etc etc the list is quite long. What a fantastic system.

Great console, I remember getting mine for super cheap when a K-Mart was going out of business in my town when I was a kid. Before that, I had only ever touched Nintendo consoles. While I still probably preferred the SNES, Genesis was an amazing console as well.
